A MESSAGE
FROM YOUR
NEW
DIRECTOR
Hello,
I am so excited and honored to be joining Westside Community
Schools as the Nutritional Services Director. Westside continues
to provide a level of excellence in both academics and their
renowned nutritional offerings and food service. Diane Zipay
and the Nutritional Services Team have established and
continue to deliver on an expectation that is second to none.
My family and I understand the high expectations and
progressive thinking. On a personal note, we look forward to
our daughter starting kindergarten at Swanson Elementary in
the fall of 2016.

I have been fortunate to have worked with many incredible
people and projects in the Omaha food and hospitality
community. My prior experience includes Executive Food and
Beverage Director of the city-owned Hilton-Omaha, and most
recently as the General Manager of Culinary, Hospitality, and
Horticulture at Metropolitan Community College. I know
that this background will compliment an already excellent
Nutritional Service team.
I will assure you that all the students will get the same care
and attention that I give my own daughter. I look very
forward to feeding your children.

As I embarked on this incredible
journey 22 years ago, I had no idea
what a rewarding experience it would
be. Frankly, I accepted the job because
I wanted to be part of the Westside
team. Really, not knowing much about
the national school lunch program,
I went about shaping my vision for Westside Nutrition
Services outside the mold of other school districts.
Surprisingly, this was the best combination of ingredients
(to coin a food term) to provide a foundation for success.
I didn’t ask why we did things, but instead, asked why
we couldn’t cook from scratch as I do at home.
We didn’t get there overnight! In over two decades we
have upgraded our equipment and our kitchens – we have
hired and trained quality staff – we have sourced
food locally - and we have not shied away from
challenging ourselves to “do it differently.” We have
where we are taking the “r” out
created a
of “revolution” and embarking on an “evolution” toward
the goal of helping children appreciate – and eat – fresh,
healthy, balanced foods and develop healthy lifestyle
practices.
The rewards have been great. In addition to our recent
honor of being named fifth best school food program
out of 3,868 districts in the nation by an independent
rating organization, we are frequently recognized
and sought after on the local level.
As would the mother of a child, I have nurtured, loved,
fed and cared for this program that touches the lives and
makes an impact on so many. Our work has been a team
effort and all the employees of Westside Nutrition Services
deserve ownership of our successes.
I am privileged to welcome Erin Vik, Westside’s new
director. His qualifications and reputation in the Omaha
food and hospitality industry are highly respected.
I am pleased to pass the torch and know all of our families
are in good hands.
As I retire from Westside Community Schools, let me
take this opportunity to say “Thank you!” You have
entrusted me with the responsibility of providing healthy
and appetizing meals to your children – and I am proud
to have done that. I will miss you all very much.
