Charlie Barton+, Rector We moved from ashes to deep purple and into blood red, from palms to sackcloth, as Lent and the first days of Holy Week rumbled through our lessons and our life. Mark told us on the first Sunday of Lent that the heavens were torn apart when Jesus was Baptized. But it will be our chancel that is thrown into disarray on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday - Continued on page 3 Workshop “Being Muslim In America, Why Media Matters”…Page 2 Annual Meeting Notice Page 3 Manor Tavern 5K and Oyster Festival Page 3 Academy Gala… Page 4 Paint a Bowl Dinner… Page 4 Financial Statement…Page 4 Sunday Worship Schedule…Page 5 Spring Concert…Page 6 Hallway Gallery Exhibit Reception… Page 6 1 2 Facebook and Pinterest: St. James Church Monkton MD some of our “behind-the-scenes” leadership changes. Sandy Gallup is stepping down as chair of the Altar Guild, a job she’s been doing since Easter 2006. She has organized the faithful team of 18+ women and men who prepare the altar for worship every Sunday and for all the special services during the liturgical year, including weddings and funerals. Sandy says, “After nine years, it feels like the right time to hand the opportunity to another leader.” Barbara Roberts is the new Chair of the Altar guild. She is a Realtor with Riley and Associates in Monkton. “My husband and I were married at Saint James Church nearly 38 years ago. I have been a member of the Altar Guild for over 20 years, and feel called to take on the leadership role at this time. I love the serenity of being in the church by myself – I always feel that everything will be okay even when I’m in the midst of turmoil. I also have enjoyed learning how everything fits together throughout the liturgical year. I’ve also been with the same Coffee Hour group (Yellow Team) for nearly as long. I have two grown children who were baptized, and attended Sunday School at Saint James. I have a 2 year old grandson who lives in Florida.” Dottie Russell (left) coordinates the small group of men and women who, every week, re-arrange the altar flowers into small bouquets and deliver with a note to our shut-in or ill parishioners as well as other neighbors who the Flower Ministry learns may need a bit of cheer. Dottie and Stewart will be moving soon to North Carolina. Joan Warnsmann (right) will be new the Flower Ministry Coordinator. “I have been an Episcopalian since my marriage 55 years ago. We have been members of St. James for 8 years after moving to the Hereford Zone. Being retired affords me the privilege to meet and visit with parishioners, shut-ins, the sick and those with other needs for consolation. I have had the pleasure of teaming with Dottie Russell, the first Sunday of each month. She will be greatly missed. I will attempt to fill the position with the help of the great group of members of this ministry in this gratifying undertaking. Thank you for this privilege.” April, 2015 Kathy Welk has been assisting in Sunday School, helped with our Vacation Bible Schools, and began the Coffee Hour crafts table. She often brought her own materials for projects with the children and continually found new craft ideas for the children. Kathy has announced that she will discontinue the Sunday Coffee Hour crafts at the end of March. Our heartfelt thanks to Sandy, Dottie and Kathy for sharing their gifts and love of Christ through their ministries. We welcome Barbara and Joan to their new leadership roles. Let us keep all of our Ministry Heads in our prayers. Being Muslim in America: Why Media Matters What role does the media play in shaping our perceptions of Islam and how is it shaping religious discourse in the public square? These last two acts will complete his assumption of our full humanity. There is no dark valley, no place of pain, terror or loss that we might encounter that has not already been sanctified by the presence of Christ. Jesus said and did many things that ring true. Some of his teachings are easy to understand, others are more challenging. But the Resurrection is the greatest sign that Christ is trustworthy…and Easter is the evidence. We are called to be an Easter people, living in hope and not dissuaded by the reversals of life or those days in which events conspire to make us doubt the faithfulness of God. Because Christ rose we can have faith that all his words are true, that all of God’s promises are real and are to be embraced. Because Jesus was resurrected and has promised new life for us – now and in the hour of our death – we can have the confidence to let the chances and changes roll through our lives without anxiety, knowing that all shall, in the end, be well. If we are not exhausting ourselves by worrying about all manner of things that are not in our control we will have energy sufficient to do the only two things needful; to Love God above all things, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We can get a bead on the specific ways in which we can do those two needful things by being participants in our own formation and seeking to be a constructive part of our faith community. A regular prayer life tunes our heart to recognize God’s voice. A deeper knowledge of Scripture lets us see the intersection between our opportunities and challenges and those in the lives of the Saints. And finally, since we have been rescued from sin and death, let us be truly thankful and commit to making better use of what we have been given – our life, such material goods as we have, the reason and skills God gave us, and any other benefits of this mortal life. April, 2015 Perhaps you are called to serve on the Vestry. Are you feeling a nudge to be part of the Outreach Ministry Community? Is this the year that you make a substantial move toward tithing? Never served on any of our Ministry Communities? Look at the web site and read all about them. Talk to one of the Community Heads. Then go exploring and see what has your name on it. We are all called, in community, to continue the work of Christ – to share the Good News and to reconcile the world to God. AMEN.
