Welcome to the Cathedral
Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Visitors to the Cathedral,
Now that we have celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, the Church returns to
Ordinary Time. One of the very first Saints we encounter in this new period of
liturgical time is Pope Saint Gregory VII. Born in the Italian region of Tuscany
around 1020 and named Hildebrand by his parents (Gregory was the name he
took after becoming Pope), Gregory lived during a dark period of history for the
Church. During the 10th and early 11th centuries, the papacy was controlled by
various affluent and influential Italian families, who sought to place members
of their households on the papal throne for less than noble ambitions. This
allowed a number of corruptions to creep into the life of the Church.
Gregory’s father was a carpenter or a peasant farmer, and his uncle was
the abbot of a monastery in Rome. The future Saint was sent to study at the
school of his uncle’s monastery, where he learned discipline and deepened
his devotion to God. After completing his schooling, he entered religious
life as a monk. After his mentor was elected Pope Gregory VI, he served as
his chaplain. However, this did not last long, as Gregory VI had a short and
turbulent reign and ultimately resigned. After his mentor’s death in 1047,
Gregory spent some time at the monastery at Cluny, and around 1049 he met
Bruno of Toul, who later became Pope Leo IX.
The new Pope put Gregory in charge of a historic monastery, where he
remained, until he was called to serve as Papal Legate and special advisor to
Leo IX. After Leo’s death, Gregory was seen as the logical successor, but he
did not want to be Pope, and so he continued to serve as a respected member
of the College of Cardinals during the reign of the next several Popes. In
1073, however, Gregory was elected Pope and immediately set about what
has become known as the ‘Gregorian Reform’. He faced a giant mess in the
Church, that needed to be fixed: simony was rampant (the buying and selling
of church offices); unlawful marriage of the clergy (clerical celibacy was in force
at this time); lay investiture (civil officials were naming people to Church offices
and investing them with the symbols of that office); and a schism between
Rome and Constantinople (this is where we get the orthodox church).
In 1074, he issued sweeping reforms that met with widespread opposition
(no one likes a reformer), but Gregory held his ground as Vicar of Christ and
visible sign of the Church’s unity (both aspects of his office that he stressed). This
naturally brought him into conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry
IV, who was the major culprit in the lay investiture controversy. Henry tried
to depose Gregory in 1076, but the Pope responded by excommunicating him
and dispensing all of his subjects of their oaths of loyalty to him. The emperor
was forced to come before the Pope as a penitent (waiting three days in the
snow) and ask for absolution, which he received. An uneasy truce existed for
a while, until he was later excommunicated again for besieging the city of
Rome in 1084, and supporting a rival anti-pope. Pope Gregory was forced to
flee Rome and died in Salerno in 1085, forgiving all his enemies and lifting all
excommunications, with the exception of Henry and the anti-pope.
Pope Saint Gregory sought to eradicate corruption from within the
Church and vehemently keep civil governments from inserting themselves
into the affairs of the Church, and for this, he faced incredible opposition
and ultimately died in exile. His words serve as a reminder for the sons and
daughters of the Church in every age, concerning the Church’s right to teach
and practice matters of faith and morals without government interference:
“In every country, even the poorest of women is permitted to take a lawful
husband according to the law of the land and by her own choice; but, through
the desires and evil practices of the wicked, Holy Church, the bride of God
and mother of us all, is not permitted lawfully to cling to her spouse on earth
in accordance with divine law and her own will”
who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. Jn 3:16

Confirmation will be celebrated at the Cathedral
on Saturday, May 23rd, at the 4:30 Mass. We joyfully
greet all those who come to the Cathedral to complete
their sacraments of Christian initiation. Please be
aware that the Confirmation Liturgy may run longer
than the typical 4:30 Mass.
Flocknote - Starting next Sunday, the Cathedral
will be rolling out a new communication tool,
called Flocknote, for the Parish Community. You
won’t hear us say this often, but please bring your
cell phone with you to Mass next weekend!
Office of Catechetical Services - Each year in the Diocese
of Cleveland, a collection is taken to support the ministries of
the Office of Catechetical Services, who focus on supporting
and enhancing the catechetical initiative (PSR programs); faith
formation for all (including adults); catechetical leader training;
and catechist formation for teachers of religion, media literacy, &
the Newman Campus Ministry program. This year, the collection
has been rescheduled for next weekend, May 30/31, 2015. A
contribution to the Office of Catechetical Services is an investment
in faith formation and religious education of every person of every
age throughout the Diocese.
Fifteen-Minute Catechism - As we fall more deeply in love
with God, our hearts should naturally abound with the desire to
come to know Him better. Ask yourself this – could you spare 15
minutes a month? This year, the last Sunday of each month will
feature a new opportunity called: “15-Minute Catechism.” The
purpose of this program is to ask and answer a question related to
our Catholic Faith. It will be held on May 31st following the 8:00 &
10:30 am Masses.
Attention All Young Adults - Our next meeting is this
coming Sunday, May 31, following the 5:30 pm Mass. We hope
that you will be able to join us and bring a friend.
Memorial Day at your Catholic Cemeteries - On May 25,
you are invited to observe Memorial Day with Mass in remembrance
of those who have died in service to the United States, and for all of
our faithful departed. For times and cemetery locations where Mass
will be celebrated, please call 216-641-7575 or visit <clecem.org>.
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, there will be one Mass at
the Cathedral at 9:00 am. The church will be closed following the
Mass. There will be no Confessions on the holiday. The Rectory
Office will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Recycling Basics
Many items are recyclable
and over time, more items
are being added to the list
of what can be recycled.
Although recycling is dependent on
your local collection point’s capacity and
facilities, as a general rule, most of the
following items are recyclable :
• Glass bottles & jars
• Milk cartons and other cartons
• Paper, including magazines, newspapers,
& office paper. Don’t forget your greeting
cards, cereal boxes, and mail.
• Aluminum drink cans
• Steel food cans (also known as “tins”
in some places), paint tins, aerosol
containers, coffee tins, bottle tops, and jar
lids – how do you know it’s steel? Use a
magnet. If it sticks to the can, it’s steel.
• Plastics with recyclable symbols on them;
leave the lids off of bottles & jars.
• Some supermarkets collect plastic bags.
• Be a good steward of the resources given
to us by God. Reclyle!

Come, O Holy Spirit, come! And from thy celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine!
Thou of comforters the best; Thou, the soul's most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below.
O most blessed light divine, Shine within these hearts of thine,

Wash the stains of guilt away.
On the faithful, who adore And confess you evermore

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of
God, born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through
him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
(All bow)
and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered
death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the
dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life
of the world to come. Amen.

Pilgrimage 2015 - Join with us this summer for
the Year of Consecrated Life Pilgrimage from June 7
to September 13, 2015. Religious communities will be
opening the doors of their homes and centers of ministry
to welcome and connect personally with pilgrims, to
discover the beauty of Christ’s love and how to live our relationship
with Jesus Christ on our journey to God who is the beginning and end
of life’s pilgrimage. During this time, pilgrims are invited to visit the
sites of three of these religious communities. After visiting three sites,
they are invited to complete their pilgrimage by joining the Cathedral
community for Sunday Mass, and to receive their pilgrimage medallion.
Please see the brochures at the doors of the Cathedral for a schedule of
dates for various communities and other details on the Pilgrimage.
Baptismal Preparation Classes - It is required that
all first-time parents attend a Baptismal Preparation class
prior to the Baptism of their first child. While parents are
welcome to attend a class anywhere in the Diocese, the
Cathedral will now be offering these classes for your convenience.
The next class is July 19th at 11:30 am. More are scheduled: October
17th at 3:30 pm, January 17th at 11:30 am, and April 23rd at 3:30 pm.

– 8:00 pm in the Lower Sacristy. All are welcome. There will be no
Centering Prayer meeting on Memorial Day, May 25th.
Marriage Encounter - Today is Pentecost Sunday and we are
reminded that Jesus is on his throne. Do we allow him to reign over our
lives? One of the ways we show this is by living in humility, gentleness
and love in a bond of peace. Do we reflect this in our marriage
relationship? Allow Jesus to be Lord of your marriage relationship. The
next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend is June 26-28 at the
Clarion Conference Center in Hudson, Ohio. Call Lori and Scott at 330305-9963 to register. Registration is available online at <WWME.org>.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Earthquake Relief for Nepal
On April 25, a devastating 7.8-magnitude
earthquake struck Nepal near Kathmandu
and nearby parts of India, followed by a
series of severe aftershocks nearly as strong
on May 12. The official death toll has
surpassed 8,000. Thanks to the generosity
of people like you, Catholic Relief Services
(CRS) has enacted a swift response and
committed at least $10 million to a 3-year
program of relief and recovery in Nepal.
The people of Nepal desperately need
our prayers and support. We request that
checks in collection envelopes (available
at the door) be made out to St. John
Cathedral with “Earthquake Relief ” in the
memo line. One check will then be sent on
to Catholic Relief Services.
