Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

Dear Members of Saint Joseph Parish;
HAPPY EASTER!
The “answer” to last weeks’ Jeopardy quiz is: Who is Mark, otherwise known as “JohnMark.”? Also, for this week’s quiz, remember you need to state your answer is the form of a
question. The answer is: “In John’s Gospel he always writes about “the disciple that Jesus
loved.” Who is this un-named disciple? There are 2 possible answers for this; I’ll accept both of
them! I have some left-over candy bars for you if you get this question right! Good luck!
One of the reasons why I asked you that question last week of the young man ‘who ran
away…” is because most of the Gospel readings that we will hear at Mass until Advent Season
comes from the Gospel of Mark. The young man who ran away during the arrest of Jesus does
not appear in the passion reading from Matthew, Luke, or John….and since the Passion
reading this year on Palm Sunday was from Mark, I thought that was an obvious give-away!
But un-named disciples carry HUGE meanings in the Gospel readings. It might be obvious
that the characters stand for a certain Gospel writer, but there is more meaning than that
behind an un-named disciple. So, you might have to do some “detective” work to figure it out.
Hint: Like reading the footnotes at the bottom of a bible page, and seeing the connection
between the Old and New Testaments, or even reading the introduction that is italicized before
a particular Gospel in the Bible is even helpful. One resurrection story about the 1 un-named
disciple to the house in Emmaus comes to mind!
Today, we go from the sadness of Good Friday where like the musical group Herman’s
Hermits could sing about Good Friday till early Easter Morning, “There’s a Kind of Hush, all
over the world….” that is, from the death of Jesus bringing us grief and sadness, to the Joy of
Easter Sunday, “I’m walking on Sunshine…” from the group Katrina and the Waves.
The Resurrection of Jesus this morning touches us in so many ways. I can remember
dealing with the death of my grandfather about this time of year in 1990 when I was 26 years
old. He suffered a heart attack 10 years prior, and he was always asking God for more time,
which he obviously and generously received! However, we thought he was going to be around
forever, like the disciples did. And when his “Good Friday” came, it was a little bit unexpected,
and shocked us and rocked our worlds like the disciples were “all shook up.” Our faith journey
in keeping the Catholic faith could have ended right there, and if it were not for a strong prayer
life, especially through the praying of the rosary. Knowing that Our Blessed Mother was always
right there with us every step of the way allowed us to “keep it together”. Ever wonder: “Why?”
Well, Our Lady saw her son, Jesus, go through the worst punishment and torture that
was every inflicted on an innocent human being; as a matter of fact, Jesus did no wrong! And
what happened to Him?--- Scourged over 5000 times, made fun of, mocked, ridiculed, lost 11
of his 12 closest friends, suffered the death penalty with no attorney nor appeals, died with
criminals, etc. ---For most mothers, I’m sure this could have been too much to take. What held
Our Lady together?
Mary knew that all of this was not the end. Mary knew that her son would rise from the
dead—just like all of us are destined for. Sure, all of us will rise someday, but we need to go
through a Good Friday first….we make it past that and just like Jesus, we too, will experience
a Resurrection Day where there will be no more death, or crying, or pain. In fact, a day that
will be the biggest “family reunion” of all time! What holds us together until then?
The belief in the Resurrection & a prayer life grounded in Jesus that makes the difference!
The Gospel stories that we heard on Palm Sunday and the Triduum are not just isolated
‘history” and “rags to riches” stories. The death and resurrection of Jesus are our destiny too,
the destiny of the whole human race…how God saved us from eternal death by His suffering
and death. BUT…but we will also rise with Him on the Last Day. And then we get to spend
eternity with the one who made it all possible…the RISEN Christ!
HE HAS RISEN, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA!!!

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY devotions will take place on April 12, 2015 at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 1032 Caledonia
St., La Crosse from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Adoration will begin immediately following the 10:00 a.m. Mass. Confessions will
be heard throughout the afternoon along with recitation of the Rosary and a selection of readings from the Diary of Saint Faustina.
We will conclude with Benediction and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Refreshments will be served following the devotions in
