PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL
Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark's Gospel we
hear the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of
commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the
disciples then. We are called to "proclaim the gospel to every
creature." For the vast majority of us, this means that we
proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives.
Treating others with dignity and respect, providing for those
less fortunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many
gifts showered on us, coming together as God's family in
worship and praise--these are all signs that the gospel has taken
root in our lives.

Adult Faith Formation
Center—Beginning May 19th
St. Jude’s is hosting an Adult Faith
Formation Center through the Archdiocese Office
of Religious Education. The course covers a
variety of topics from Revelation to Catholic
Social Teaching through a series of sessions
running from May 19th through June 13th: Tuesday
and Thursday evenings form 6-9:30 p.m. and 2
Saturdays from 9-4 p.m.
The class is the first step in certification for faith
formation or liturgy, but is open to everyone as a
way to reflect on a variety of topics in our Catholic
faith. The course will be taught by Deacon Dave
Smith from St. Julies, Linda Smith and Cindy

The Confirmation program at Saint Jude celebrates the Holy Spirit working in
the hearts of our teens. Confirmation preparation is a time of discernment for
our teens to explore, challenge, grow and eventually take ownership of the
Catholic Faith. It is a process that involves our teens, families, and the entire
parish community.

Padre Serra Parish Presents:
“Trust, Faith, and Forgiveness in a
Fearful World”
Fr. Alexei Smith
How can we trust others, strengthen our faith and forgive
when we feel wronged? Many of us have experienced
hurts and times of hopelessness. Fr. Alexei Smith, a
Greek Catholic Priest and recipient of The Valley Interfaith Council’s prestigious Religious Leadership Award,
will present ways in which we can use our faith foundation to find reconciliation with others and peace for ourselves. Fr. Smith will also touch upon the theological
similarities and differences in dealing with these issues in
different faith traditions, and show how the sharing of
values and conversation can lead to trust, faith and forgiveness in the world we live in as well.
Rt. Rev. Alexei Smith, a graduate of the Holy Cross
Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Boston and Los
Angeles native, has served as the Ecumenical and Interreligious Officer for the Los Angeles Archdiocese since
2000. He currently serves on the Southern California
Ecumenical Council. Fr. Smith is a frequent speaker at
local interfaith venues.

The St. Jude Men's Club meets the second Tuesday of every month from 7-9
PM in the Parish Hall (rooms 5 & 6). The next meeting will be
Monday, June 8th. The Men's Club aims to be the central gathering point of
the men of our parish in order to provide opportunities for fellowship,

local community. The meeting format includes fellowship time, club planning
updates, an open forum for membership input into club activities, and a guest
speaker on a subject of general interest to Catholic men.
If you haven't yet attended a club meeting, you are welcome to join us. If you
came before and have stopped coming, it's time to give the Men's Club a
second look and have some input into what Men's Club is all about. All men
are welcome.

St. Jude's Boy Scout Troop 745 invites boys ages 10
and older and their parents to a Boy Scout Information
and Activity Night on Wednesday, May 20 from 7:30 to
9:00 at the Parish Hall. Boy Scouts is open to boys
between the ages of 10 and 18, and the scouting
program emphasizes and reinforces the values that
originate in our home, school and church. Camping, hiking and spending
time in the outdoors teaches self-assurance, teamwork, organization and
leadership skills. In addition to monthly outdoor activities, the troop
participates in numerous community service projects throughout the year.
Other activities like First Aid training, swimming, cooking, backpacking,
kayaking, white water rafting and model rocketry build self-reliance and the
confidence to handle challenges that cross the scout’s path. Individual
scouts can also work on a wide range of merit badges focused on hobby and
career skills on their way to rank advancements. This is a youth-run
program with adult leaders to help with planning, direction and safety. Our
senior scouts learn firsthand the challenges of leadership and work as
mentors to the younger scouts.
