All of our faith is built around this one fact. This weekend we also celebrate Mother’s Day. We honor the women who both gave us life and nurtured us through our childhood. Many years ago, I was helping with a Reconciliation service at a small country church. The pastor asked me to use the old confessional in the church (those of you who are older will recall the confessional “box” in which the priest sits in the middle and people come in on two sides and kneel in the dark). The priest opens a sliding door and the person on the other side is hidden by a screen. As I opened the screen to one side, I heard a woman confess her sins and then go on to express concern for her son. He was making some bad life choices and she was worried for his safety and future. I asked her a few questions which included the age of her son. She told me, “He is 62 years old!” After she left, and before I opened the door to the other side, I laughed to myself and wondered if she would ever let him grow up. I later realized that I could never truly understand the connection and love that mother (or any mother for that matter).had for her son. In today’s Gospel reading from John, Jesus tells His disciples, “As the Father loves me, so I love you.” He goes on to tell them that it was not the disciples who chose Jesus, but it was He who chose them. They should love one another as He loves them. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for their friends. As I reflect on the love that Jesus is talking about in today’s Gospel, I realize that the love Jesus has for us, as well as the love that we have for each other, is not the love that the world preaches. It is not a love that is based upon feeling (because there are many times that “feeling” of love is not present). Rather, it is the love of commitment. It is the love that the woman had discussed so many years ago in the confessional. Long after the smiles and happiness are gone from the young child and young mother, the commitment remains. Even when the person (like the son of the old woman) is far away, the love doesn’t die. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, perhaps all of us, men and women alike, can learn from the example of our mothers as to the type of love that Jesus has for us and the love we are called to have for each other! Blessings, Fr. Howard P.S. The Church calls for her priests to take a retreat each year to refresh their spiritual lives. I will be taking my annual 8 day silent retreat this coming Monday. I ask that you keep me in your prayers. Page 3 Parish Staff Please contact members of the parish staff for questions, comments or concerns at (281) 332-3031 or [email protected].
