After lunch, we’ll go see a concert at Bradley. The LORD knows the way of the righteous. Psalm 1:6 Jeremiah 3:15 reads: “I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.” It has been a long time since the Call Committee was formed...so long, that two of the members have babies on the way! Finally, we are excited to announce that the Call Committee has selected a Nominee of Choice. Recently we had multiple interviews with two wonderful pastoral candidates. After many hours of prayers and discussions, we presented to the Council a pastor that we highly recommend to be our next Senior Pastor here at Salem! To give you a bit of insight, this candidate was approached by nine different congregations. Four of them (including Salem) invited the candidate back for second interviews. Throughout our interviews and a visit to Salem and Peoria, both the candidate and his wife were highly impressed. When we offered our decision, the candidate was excited. He told me Salem is clearly number one on his list! Unfortunately we cannot reveal his name yet — but hopefully that can be made public soon. For now we can only say that he is from Minnesota. Where do we go from here? The Council will set up a date to meet with and interview our candidate. Assuming this goes well, the next step will be for the pastor and his wife to meet and greet the congregation. After that, an official congregational vote will be scheduled, confirming to call this pastor as our new leader. In the meantime, we continue to request your prayers for a continued and smooth process! Leo Vandervlugt, Salem Call Committee Worship With Us! Faith & Science On May 2, 18 youth and adults from the Northern Conference of our synod came together to talk about issues of faith and science and how those two aspects of our lives interconnect. With videos, small group activities, and a panel of Lutheran scientists from two of our congregations, we explored areas of how we view the relationship between faith and science, brain connections, outer space, and how God is working in and through creation and scientific exploration. 2 Connor Kelly is graduating from East Peoria Community High School where he was involved in band, the school musicals, the Rock ‘N’ Roll Up Your Sleeve Blood Drive, and Key Club. There are quite a few items that have lost their home. Among other things, we have several children’s sweat shirts, a petite jean jacket, and a man’s leather jacket and gloves. They are in the first floor coat rack. While you are there checking out the clothes, you may want to check the assortment of dishes in the kitchen on the metal rack. They came to Salem with a delicious meal to share and now they need to go home. Please pick these things up by May 30; otherwise they will be donated to the Church Mouse. Let’s plant geraniums! Bring your trowel, garden gloves and water and let’s plant the geraniums from our Pentecost Chancel Garden on the church grounds at 9:00am on Monday, May 25! In case it rains, we’ll try again the same time the next day (May 26). Blood Drive Are you able to give the life-saving gift of blood? The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis It’s an oldie but a goodie for those who enjoy a challenging read with a humorous approach. The letters in the book are written by a seasoned demon, Screwtape, to his neophyte nephew, Wormwood, with schemes for securing the soul of Wormwood’s “patient” for hell. Wormwood’s patient is a British man who has recently become a Christian, and whose attention is turned to his mother, his love interest, and the war in Europe. Among the many topics in Screwtape’s instructions are jokes, choosing friends and churches, attitudes toward demons, distractions from God, pain and pleasure, food, humility, time, and cowardice. Especially interesting are the instructions for how to use World War II to push the patient away from the “Enemy” (God). One instruction is the use of fear. On learning that the patient (Screwtape cont on pg 5) 4 (Screwtape cont from pg 4)) could be called up for military service, Screwtape writes, “We want him to be in the maximum uncertainty, so that his mind will be filled with contradictory pictures of the future, every one which arouses hope or fear. There is nothing like suspense and anxiety for barricading a human’s mind against the Enemy. He wants men to be concerned with what they do; our business is to keep them thinking about what will happen to them.” Another instruction is in the use of patriotism or pacifism. Screwtape writes, “Whichever he adopts, your main task will be the same. Let him begin by treating the patriotism or pacifism as part of his religion…Then quietly nurse him onto the stage at which religion becomes merely part of the ‘cause,’ in which Christianity is valued chiefly because of the excellent arguments it can produce in favor of the British war effort or of Pacifism.” The Screwtape Letters is an excellent source for revealing the subtleties of how Satan and his minion use our everyday emotions, reasoning and actions to influence us negatively and create barriers in our relationship with God. Does Wormwood win his patient’s soul for his “Father Below”? Find out for yourself in this book filled with the awesome and timeless wisdom of one of the greatest Christian writers of the 20th Century. The Screwtape Letters is available in Salem’s library.
