From the Principal’s Desk…
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Welcome back to a chilly Term 2! I trust you had a
relaxing and enjoyable break over Easter and were
able to spend time with family and friends. It has
been a busy start to the term already and everyone
has hit the ground running.
Last week the
students were exceptionally well behaved on the
Troop Train and had a really enjoyable time. It
was such a fantastic opportunity for the students to
be part of this and I am sure it is something they
will remember for a long time.
On Saturday, the staff, students and many
community members commemorated ANZAC day.
What a great start to the weekend it was to see so
many students in full uniform remembering those
men, women and animals that died for our country.
Thank you to all those people who attended and
represented Alpha SS.
On the weekend, many staff and students
participated in Pink Stumps Day. A great time was
had by all. Much thanks needs to go to Dale and
Rachel Bryce, Sally McKeering, The P and C,
particularly Tina, Mick and Ben and Miss Clarke for
making the day so fun and for being so organised.
This term, the students in years 3, 5 and 7 will be
sitting their NAPLAN tests. Lots of preparation and
learning has been taking place this year and I have
confidence that the students will achieve great
results. I would like to remind the students about
taking their time to answer each question and not
stress about anything they are unfamiliar with. It
is one of the many testing devices schools use to
determine how best to teach each student. Good
luck to all our NAPLAN students!
Next week, Miss Clarke will be convening the
Central West 12 Years and Under Touch
Football Carnival. Students from the Central
West area will travel to Alpha for this carnival
on May 6. Information about this will go
home for those students who are eligible to
attend. The P and C will be running the
canteen on the day. Any helpers would be
greatly appreciated.
Please contact Tina
Standerwick or the P and C if you are able to
help.
On Monday the 11 May, there will be a
Chaplaincy meeting at 5 p.m. here at school.
We are really trying to encourage more
community members to become involved in
our Chaplaincy committee.
No prior
experience is needed and all new members
are welcome. For further information, please
see Chappy or Penny Rogers.
I reminded the students today about the four
key school values of Respect, Responsibility,
Safety and Learning I would like to see them
uphold as per our school’s Responsible
Behaviour Plan. Each week at Behaviour
Parade I focus on one key value depending
on any behaviour issues that may have
occurred the previous week. This week I
reminded the students about fun, safe play,
particularly when playing Gaelic football at
lunchtimes and also ICT usage during school
times.
I am currently working with HR to find a
replacement teacher for Ms Wright. I will
keep you posted as to how and when a new
teacher will be joining us at Alpha.
Congratulations to all our staff and students
on such a great start to Term 2. It is so

Have a great fortnight. Please let me know if
there are any issues I need to be aware of.

Tea
Mother’s Day Morning Tea will not be held this year
as we have had no Music teacher based at our
school to help us organise performances. As this is
a big part of this morning tea and allows us to
showcase our school it would not be the same
without it. We know that this event is something
which everyone looks forward to so we will
endeavour to run it again next year.
Years 1/2/3 Bulletin
Welcome back to school! The kids have settled in nicely
and we have had an action packed first week back. The
outline for this term is as follows:
Science – This term we are looking at earth science. We
are focusing on day and night features, the earth’s orbit
and shadows!
Geography – The focus for Geography is connections to
places. Within this unit, students will look at different
places in Australia as well as world heritage sites.
Maths – Maths groups have shuffled around this
term. The year 2 and 3 students have been merged
together into one class for maths. Students in each year
level will be exposed to number, statistics and
measurement content.
English – This term we will be focusing on narratives!
Thank you for your continued support. We are very

Prep Newsflash
Hello parents, and welcome back to school for term 2!
The preps have already had a busy term, starting
their new science, geography and English units, as well
as spending Wednesday afternoon last week on the
train to Anakie. All of the preps had a lot of fun, and
showed beautiful behaviour and manners.
This term we will be working on recounts in English,
materials and their properties in science, and features
of a place in geography. Your child may also come
home this term with the mystery box! The mystery
box is for your child to bring in an item for show and
share, which they then need to give clues for the
other children to guess what it is. Sshh! Don't tell
anyone!
Please remind your child to bring back their homework
every Friday, so it can be prepared for the following
week. Remember that homework club starts again
today, and will be running every Monday until the end
of term from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
Health – Mr Hammer will continue to teach Health this
term. Students will be looking at healthy eating and
ICT. They will be designing their own healthy
sandwich and then making it.
Thank you for a wonderful first week back!

Years 4/5/6 Intelligence
Dear Parents,
What a great start to the term! We have had a lot of fun
starting our new units for the term and can’t wait to continue on
with them. Behaviour has been good and we haven't had any
major issues for the first week back. Lets hope this can continue on
for the rest of the year! We have reached reward 2 on our marble
jar, so on Tuesday we are having some free time to celebrate. Parent
teacher interviews are this week and I am looking forward to seeing
the majority of you there. Please remember that they are only 15
minutes long. If you have further questions, we can schedule another
time where we aren't restricted by time boundaries. Hope you have
all found it easy to get back into the swing of things!

Year 7-10 Historians
The 7-10s will be completing their World War II Unit
over the coming weeks. Today, we were reading
about the Kokoda campaign. We discovered that
the distance that Australian troops trekked was the
same as walking to Emerald. Yet their journey
included steep mountainous jungle terrain and
enemy fire. It is a timely reminder of the hardships
that Australian troops went through, in order to safe
-guard the privileges that we take for granted
today. In the second half of the term we will be
beginning a new Unit on Rights and Freedoms - an
appropriate sequel to our current Unit.

LOCK IT OR LOSE IT
Securing your Vehicle - When leaving your vehicle, the driver must properly secure the vehicle by:
Turning off the engine,
Applying the handbrake,
Removing the ignition key if no one 16 years of age or over is remaining in the vehicle and
Locking the doors if no one is remaining in the vehicle.
A driver has “left” the vehicle when he or she is more than three metres away from it. The purpose of this
law is to protect your vehicle and property from theft and/or damage. This is very relevant at present with a
lot of travellers and strangers passing through town at this time of year.

The Alpha Police Station counter hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm
when possible. There will always be exceptions to this such as emergency callouts, training, meetings
and other operational policing demands, so it may be best to check in advance or phone before attending.
