This year most exhibits will be located along the WAKY.
Come prepared to walk to interpretive stations about
tree identification, tree health, invasive species, wild
flowers, wetlands, etc. An informative tree selection station will help you find just the right tree for your yard.
The Kentucky Children’s Garden will be free to all.

This year’s activities support the theme “Kentucky’s Past,
Present and Future,” beginning with the Founder’s Lecture on March 26 (see p. 2) and followed by a series of
events for children and families planned for April 1
(Past), April 12 (Present), and April 23 (Future). Check the
calendar (pages 4) for details. The month culminates in
our annual Arbor Day celebration, April 25.
Thanks to our partner KU, costs of events will be reduced
or free. KU employees and their guests may attend
events at no cost. KU continues to be a model of corporate and public support for our environment.

weather-worthy birdhouse, pick up an entry form at the Visitor Center or download one from the website.
Entry fees are $ 10 per individual; ($5 under age 12) and must be received no later than May 1, 2015. Mail
to: Friends of The Arboretum, 500 Alumni Drive, Lexington, KY 40503. Deliver ready-to-display birdhouses to
the Visitor Center Monday, May 4 - Wednesday, May 6. You may donate your birdhouse to be auctioned
for the benefit of The Arboretum or reclaim it at the end. Visitors are invited to bid on birdhouses during
the exhibit, May 16 – 31. Attend the Final Reception on May 31 and hear results of the Silent Auction.

I also want to update you on some exciting changes
and additions to the Friends 2015 event calendar. In
May we will bring back the Birdhouse Display with a
reception and silent auction on May 31. It is part of a
new, month long celebration, For the Birds!, that will
include educational and fun events about birds for the
entire family.
In July we will hold the re-scheduled Glories in the
Garden Art Exhibit that missed its February deadline
due to the snow this winter.

In October we’ll bring a new and exciting festivity to
The Arboretum as our annual Gala in the Garden fundraising event evolves into a full Fall Festival for the
entire family. The Arboretum will be decorated for fall,
and we can all look forward to a great food, music,
scarecrows, animal guests, pumpkins galore, and more.
Proceeds will benefit the Legacy Campaign: the expansion of the Dorotha Smith Oatts Visitor Center and The
Arboretum Endowment. Look for details on the Fall

Early History of the Bluegrass

Manager, Lower Howard’s Creek Preserve
Created in 2000, Lower Howard’s Creek Nature and
Heritage Preserve consists of 240 acres of land on both sides of
the creek upstream from its confluence with the Kentucky River. The Preserve is committed to protecting natural communities and rare species and restoring and interpreting historical
and archeological resources. From the 1780s until the Civil War,
this area was one of the largest manufacturing centers west of
the Alleghenies Mountains.

Executive Director, Jack Jouett House Historic Site
Captain John (Jack) Jouett, Jr. rode through the backwoods of
Virginia to warn Governor Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia
Legislature of the approach of British troops. His heroic act
helped the American Revolution by preventing the capture of
important political leaders. Jouett migrated to the Bluegrass
after the war where he played a role in the Kentucky statehood
convention, served in the legislature, and became a prosperous
planter and breeder.

2015 Welcomes the New Edible Garden

We have seen an increasing need to promote, teach about,
and demonstrate edible gardening. The original Gourmet
Chef’s Garden, built in 2011, was created for that reason.
Because of a host of soil issues, it has always been a struggle to maintain, so we removed the Chef’s Garden this
past fall. Now a section of The Home Demonstration Garden is being repurposed as the Edible Garden.
The new Edible Garden will encompass The Master Gardeners’ Demonstration Vegetable and Herb Gardens as
well as the Accessible Garden and the series of spoke beds
in that area. It will contain herbs, vegetables, and edible
flowers that can be grown in the Bluegrass. The areas will
showcase varieties that are resistant to pests, and we will
make use of innovative pest control strategies.
Spoke beds, Master Gardeners area, Herb Garden, and Accessible
Garden will become our new Edible Garden.
In conjunction with the new garden we are offering a new
volunteer opportunity. We will hold weekly workdays every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon when volunteers,
working with staff, will plant, cultivate, and harvest produce and herbs grown in the garden. Each work session will
begin with a 15-20 minute class on different garden topics. Topics for spring and summer include inoculating legumes, cold hardy veggies, super foods, asian greens, etc. Workdays will start March 24 and go through October.
While volunteering their time, volunteers will learn gardening techniques and grow hundreds of pounds of produce
and herbs to donate to local food pantries.
Come help us make this a big success. Volunteer if you can or just come and visit. You’re sure to discover some
plants and techniques you can use in your own garden.
Arboretum Explorer Website Goes Live

We are excited to announce that The Arboretum Explorer™ website went 'live' in January. Arboretum Explorer™ is
an online interface that allows users to search and locate items in The Arboretum’s plant collections, as well as garden features, memorials, and more. This website draws data from our recently renovated plant-records software and
makes pertinent information available in a user-friendly format.
As you can see in the cellphone photo at the right, the website includes four tabs.
Perhaps the most useful and comprehensive feature is the SEARCH tab that is displayed from the home page: www.http://uky.arboretumexplorer.org. This feature
allows users to search for a plant by scientific or common name, Genus, Family, or
region (such as Arboretum Woods). For example, if you search for ‘oak’, a list of the
twenty native oak species will display on the bottom of the page. To go one step further, click on ‘bur oak’ from the list, and a new page will appear showing an image
of a bur oak, a list of each bur oak (we have 51), and a map displaying the exact locations of each bur oak tree within The Arboretum (the yellow circles in the photo).
The MAP tab is useful for visitors who can access Arboretum Explorer in a mobilefriendly format while walking outside. This feature will allow visitors to see their
current location on the map in addition to all of the trees around them, allowing for
instant identification of unknown species. Finally, the FEATURES tab is a sortable
and searchable means through which memorial trees and benches, birdhouses, specialty gardens, facilities, and more can be located.
Please note that Arboretum Explorer is a work in progress as well as a dynamic inventory that is changed and updated regularly. We hope you will utilize this new
tool for connecting with The Arboretum’s plant collections.

Volunteer of the Quarter, Hussain Almsharee

Mr. Hussein Almsharee describes The Arboretum with one word, “Magic.” When given
the opportunity to select a volunteering assignment from Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program work, he visited the several sites on the list of supporting organizations.
When he saw the magic here, The Arboretum was his choice. In the past four months, he
has come to view the staff here as family.
Mr. Almsharee arrived in Kentucky seven months ago with his wife and two young children. His previous experiences centered on the outdoors. He worked for four years in a
garden in Jordan. In the summer he ensured the gardens were well watered and in the
autumn he was responsible for ensuring insects did not damage the olive trees. One thing
he misses in Kentucky is palm trees.
At The Arboretum we have benefited from his experience. He volunteers Monday-Friday after his ESL classes. According to both Jesse and Robert, the Rose Garden has never looked better. Hussein works with attention to detail
and always finishes the job, no matter how long the task may take. He ensures invasive species are removed and has
laid down wood chips along the Walk Across Kentucky.
While The Arboretum and staff have welcomed Hussein and provided him with a warm introduction to Kentucky,
he has encouraged the staff to try new things. For example, sage and cinnamon bark teas are great for combating the
flu! Hussein is also an auto mechanic and has given advice on car mysteries. He is a honey enthusiast, and after hearing about the wonders of olive oil, I may just toss away the store bought hair conditioner. Congratulations Hussein
Almsharee on being named Volunteer of the Quarter, and welcome to Kentucky!

AHS Reciprocal Admissions Program
for Arboretum Members

The Arboretum is a member of the American Horticultural Society (AHS) which offers as a benefit, at all
Friends membership levels, the Reciprocal Admissions
Program (RAP). This program promotes horticulture
across North America by encouraging people to visit
gardens and other horticultural institutions. The RAP
includes a network of nearly 300 horticultural organizations in the U.S., Canada, the Cayman Islands, and
the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The “rules” state that “each member card will only admit the individual(s) listed on the card.” In the case of
a family membership, benefits must be extended to at
least two individuals; it is at the garden’s discretion to
extend to more than two individuals.

Have you Seen The Handsome Hawk?

If you’ve been to The Arboretum lately, you may have noticed a special feathery guest. Fans have nicknamed him Harry, and he is a red-tailed hawk.

Red-tailed hawks, the most common hawk in North America, are recognized
by their trademark reddish-brown tail. They have excellent vision and are efficient hunters. Red-tails are monogamous and mate for life. Both males and
females incubate the eggs and feed the young until they leave the nest six
weeks after hatching. Inhabitants of open country, red-tails can be found sailing over fields, circling with their broad, rounded wings, or perched on high
places, watching for prey.
The next time you visit The Arboretum, look for Harry. Check the tree stumps on the Walk Across Kentucky where he
has been spotted posing for pictures. Or, glance up at the water tower, his favorite perch.
Though on occasion, Harry has been seen eyeing the ducklings in the Children’s Garden, he seems more interested in
rabbits, chipmunks, and mice. With Harry overseeing the gardens, delicate plants like tulips, lettuce and Swiss chard
can safely grow near The Arboretum entrance without being nibbled by rodents.
