In towns across Ontario businesses are beginning
to enter into their summer lull. Majority of businesses,
especially in major cities, spend most of the summer
with extra down time, declined sales and minimal hours
worked. Lucky for us, we are not like every other town.
Sauble Beach thrives in the warm weather when people
swarm to get away from the concrete jungle they call home
and enter the serene and beautiful town of Sauble Beach.
A lot of businesses are now renovating, cleaning,
ordering, stocking and hiring to prepare for the May 2-4
weekend that quickly approaches. With so much going on
it would be nice to get a little help don’t you think? That’s
where the Sauble Beach Chamber of Commerce steps in.

Spring is here! It is wonderful to see the sunshine and warmer weather returning, as we get ready to welcome summer in Sauble Beach.
The Chamber has been hard at work planning summer events and
festivities and we are pleased to bring back the following events:
Tuesday Cruise Night
The Sauble Sunset Cruisers will showcase some of the most beautiful
vintage cars in the area right near Lakeshore Boulevard. All classic
makes and models are welcome, just show up and park. There is
also a Motorcycle Show ‘n Shine, so come out and admire all the
great vehicles.
Sandfest
August 7th to 9th are the dates for this three day event. Live music
is scheduled for each day, along with the Sunset Cruisers impressive
Classic Car Show on Saturday. The annual sand castle building competition is always interesting - so stay tuned for more details.
8KM Walk/Run
August 16th – This popular event is back, with more information to
be announced soon.

Ski Club
The Club would like to thank all members, volunteers,
supporters and visitors that came out to enjoy the Sauble Cross
Country Ski & Snowshoe trails this season.
We enjoyed the good snow, many wonderful-sunny days
and plenty of VERY cold days, especially in February. Night
ski outings Dec. to March were very well attended and special
time to enjoy even more comradery with friend.
Winterfest and Family Day events were a big hit and
brought even more people out to experience the trails.
We continue to improve the trails and always look
forward to hearing any feedback you have.

Ontario and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding
people to take simple precautions
this spring to prevent attracting
black bears as they come out of hibernation.
Follow these simple instructions to minimize the chances of attracting bears:
The potential for human-bear conflict increases when
there is little natural food available
for bears. If this happens, black
bears will search for other food
sources, such as garbage and bird
feed, which can draw bears to populated areas.
•
Put out garbage only on the
morning of pickup.
•
Store garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids.
•
Put away bird feeders. Seed,
suet and nectar also attract bears.
•
Pick fruits and berries as
they ripen -- don’t let them rot on
the ground.
•
Clean outdoor barbecue
grills after each use, including the
grease trap underneath. Bears will
be drawn by smells from great distances, including grease and food
residue on grills.
•
Keep dogs on leash; sometimes bears will follow off-leash
dogs back to you.
Bears entering a populated
area are only a danger if they pose
an immediate threat to your personal safety or that of the general public.

By-Law You Should Know About

Everyone loves a campfire.
It’s a great place to get people together to share some laughs, stories,
sing songs and eat a smore or two.
We hope that you do continue to enjoy campfires but we also want our
residents and visitors to have a safe
experience in South Bruce Peninsula. This is why we have developed
the new “Open Air Burning By-law
17-2013.”
In the by-law, a campfire is
called a “recreational fire”. It must
be contained in a non-combustible
burning device no larger than 2 feet
x 2 feet x 2 feet. and having a clearance radius of 13 feet (4 meters) or
more. In a recreational fire, you
may only burn CLEAN DRY WOOD,
or commercially produced charcoal
or briquettes. The wood must also
be cut smaller than the burning device.
If you are wanting to burn
brush or natural vegetation, you
must first contact The South Bruce
Peninsula Emergency Services at
519-534-1400 x133. They will first
check your property zoning, burn
pile size and then determine if a
permit is required and can be granted. If your property has a zoning
of R1A/R1B/R2/R3/or R4 under no
circumstances will you be issued a
permit.

If you have leaves or grass
clippings, the landfill located at 1249
Sauble Falls Parkway (between Oliphant and Sauble Beach) will accept
drop-offs free of charge. If you have
brush, the landfill has a charge of
$95/ton. Cardboard may be dropped
off at the recycling area in the landfill or in Wiarton’s Louisa St. parking lot.
There are set rules that everyone must follow when burning
no matter the size or location of
the fire and even if you have a per-
mit. There is absolutely no burning during a fire ban. No burning
if winds are above 20km/h, if there
is rain, if there is fog or if there is
a smog alert issued. When you have
a fire, the neighboring properties
must not be adversely affected.
The smoke from your fire must not
blow across roadways which could
hamper driving abilities. You must
always have an effective fire extinguisher large enough to put out the
fire immediately available and the
fire MUST be supervised at all times
by an adult and completely extinguished before leaving the area.
Another aspect to the new
by-law covers “Flying Lanterns.”
They resemble small paper hot-air
balloons fuelled by an open flame.
They are visually appealing but are
potential fire hazards because of
their volatile & unpredictable flight
path. They can easily land on tree
tops, buildings and other combustible properties while still ignited and
potentially cause a fire. It is for this
reason that these items are strictly
prohibited in The Town of South
Bruce Peninsula.
The next time you have a
campfire, try out a ‘healthier’ option
we like to call a “Singing Apple”.
Spear an apple onto your roasting
stick and cook the apple over the
hot coals until the skin is burnt and
the apple ‘sings’. Remove the apple
from the fire and carefully peel off
the burnt skin. Then roll the apple
in cinnamon sugar – A “Singing Apple” makes for a tasty treat!
Habitat
for
Humanity
Grey Bruce is planning a Build in
Sauble Beach. A building lot has been
donated on Frederick Street and the
process for selecting a qualifying
family is underway.
While a start date for
construction has not been set,
Habitat is currently inviting the
community to get involved in this
project. Volunteers are needed
to serve on 4 Committees: Construction, Volunteer, Food, and
Fundraising. These committees will
begin their work prior to construction so everything is in place for
“shovels to go into the ground.” By
using mostly volunteer labour and
donated materials, Habitat is able
to build homes at low-cost, making
them affordable for families who are
currently
struggling
to
make
ends
meet.
An Information Session
about the Sauble Beach Build was
held on Thursday April 23, 2015 at
7pm at the Sauble Beach Community Centre. At this session there was
a presentation about Habitat’s mission and model as well as details on
how people, regardless of their skill
level, can help with this Build.

Recently, major enhancements
to the Advance Payments Program
(APP) designed to improve and
streamline administration, provide
greater flexibility and more repayment options, and ease access to the
program for producers came into
effect. Larry Miller, MP for BruceGrey-Owen Sound, welcomes these
enhancements.
The Advance Payments Program (APP) is a financial loan guarantee program that gives producers
easier access to credit through cash
advances. Advances provide up to
50% of the average market price
producers are expected to receive
for their agricultural product. Producers can receive cash advances of up to $400,000 with the first
$100,000 interest-free for up to 18
months.
New enhancements to the
APP include:
- Producers can receive advances
for all commodities through one
application with a single administrator;
- No requirement for a producer to
be principally occupied in farming;
- A repayment schedule in line with
the perishable date of non-storable
products thereby avoiding the need
for proof of sale;
- Repayment of advances can be
made without proof of sale without
penalty:
- When a producer waits to market
the commodity until conditions are
more favourable; or
- If the agricultural product becomes unmarketable through no
fault of the producer.
These enhancements are
part of the Agricultural Growth Act
which modernizes and strengthens
federal agriculture legislation, supports innovation in the Canadian
agriculture industry and enhances
global market opportunities.
“The changes to the Advance Payments Program that recently took effect will give farmers
in Bruce and Grey counties a more
flexible tool to manage their cash
flow and will be in place in time to
help producers plan for the upcoming production year,” said Miller.
“These changes will cut red tape,
make the program easier to access,
and create flexible repayment options for all farmers.”

With the coming of spring, the
Sandpipers welcome home those
members who have taken some time
to escape the cold winter. Spring
also brings more sociability and
fellowship through outdoor activities. The Sandpiper BBQ will be held
on Monday, June 8th at 11:30 a.m.
at the Sauble Community Centre.
This annual event is for members
only and is free. Please remember
to bring a donation toward the Salvation Army Food Bank. All members are invited to take this opportunity to come and join in the fun!
The Sandpipers offer year
round recreational activities such
as bid euchre, bridge, solo, billiards, darts, table shuffle, Wii
games, quilting, floor shuffleboard
and lawn bowling which operates
from May to October. The Sandpipers will happily teach anyone with
an interest. “Soup’s On” is the 3rd
Wednesday every month at 11:30
a.m. and the Sandpipers are grateful to the RBC Sauble Branch for
sponsoring this event. Throughout
the year, many social events such
as our Mystery Wine and Cheese,

Trips, Christmas Craft Show and

Sauble Singers Community Choir is a fun and dedicated
group of individuals who are drawn
together by a love of singing. If you
love to be part of that special fellowship please join us on Thursday evenings at the community centre.
For more than 25 years this
choir has been bringing music to
Sauble Beach and the surrounding
area. “In the beginning there was
Dot”. This is the first line in the archive of Sauble Singers 1987. Dorothy Turvill retired to Sauble Beach.
She had led a choir in Mississauga
and missed this so much that she decided to begin one here. So began
the history of the Sauble Singers on

Kim Mizen
Sauble Trading Post
The Sauble Trading Post will
open Friday, May 15, 2015 after a
fire caused extensive damage last
summer. Kevin Walker and Kim
Mizen, owners since 2001, managed
the re-build efforts with a goal of
preserving the famous landmark on
South Sauble Beach.
“It was important to maintain the historic character of a
1930’s general store and ice cream
parlour”, says Kim . “We have a real
connection to the heritage of the
Sauble Trading Post. When we purchased the store, my grandfather
was keen to share the property’s history. The general store was built in
1934 by a man named Mr. Roberts.
Roberts had two daughters who
helped him run the store. In 2002,
Mrs. Ethel White, one of the daughters of the original owner, came
with my grandfather to meet us!”
Ethel White was in her mid-eighties when she visited. She presented
Kevin and Kim with a photograph
taken in front of the South Sauble
Store in the early days (circa-1937).
Both Kevin and Kim have
deep roots in the area. Kevin Walker grew up on a beef farm on Spring
Creek Road, Hepworth and worked
for 14 years as the Grocery Manager at Kirkland’s Valumart. Kim Mizen grew up on a farm near Chesley
Lake. Coincidently, Mrs. Ethel White
was also the original owner of the
Mizen home farm (Kim’s grandfather Charles), hence the connection
to the store.
Since last fall, Kevin has
worked with local contractors and
suppliers to rebuild the store. A
team of carpenters worked to take
out the fire debris and rebuild the
store from the ground up. Fire
damaged walls and roof were carefully removed to preserve the building. The result is a heritage rebuild
with modern efficiencies.
The Sauble Trading Post
- Ice Cream Parlour and General
Store is located at 22nd Street South
between 2nd Avenue South and the
beach. Kevin and Kim will be open
weekends starting May 15th from
8:00AM - 10:00 PM. The store serves
a little bit of everything including:
propane refilling station, coffee and
newspapers, groceries, snacks, ice,
movies, beach toys, firewood, fireworks, and of course ICE CREAM!

we are not up to date on the current

A significant growth has occurred in who and how people view
newspapers online. A 79% growth
has occurred since 2014 for males
aged 35-55+ who have begun to

Spring has finally arrived
and with it the outdoor activities of
the Sauble and Area Men’s Club get
underway. Much will be happening again this year with golf being
a premier activity for the many of
the men. Chesley Lake Golf Course
will once again host our members
every Thursday morning beginning
on April 30th. Last year we began
to play pickleball on the Chesley
Lake tennis courts and had a great
response from members who enjoy
a more invigorating sport. We will
be playing on Monday mornings
and encourage all members and
their partner to come and experience the fastest growing sport in
North America.
One of our clubs main
goals is to support local events and
there are many. Volunteers will
be helping out at the Zion-Amabel
Garage Sale on May 15th and 16th
and at the Air and Car show being
held at the Wiarton Airport on June
13th. Several other events during
the next few months will give our
members an opportunity to get
involved.
Spring and summer activities abound including a bus trip
to Camp Borden, the Sauble Parkway clean-up, a trip to the Drayton
Theatre, lawn bowling, hazardous
waste clean-up, a bocce ball tournament, golf tournament, car rally
and trip to Stratford for the musical
‘Carousel’.
We also love to learn and
eat and dinner meetings are a staple. In April we were privileged to
have with us Mike Prevost, president of the Sydenham Sportsmen’s
Association who shared a wealth of
information. He estimated that the
annual Salmon Derby has boosted
the local economy by 1.5 to 2.5 million dollars over the years.

Hike for Hospice

On Sunday, May 3rd, Bruce Peninsula Hospice will join thousands
of people across the country, as they come together to raise funds for hospice palliative care programs and services. Bruce Peninsula Hospice (BPH)
has been serving the Bruce Peninsula and surrounding area since 1995, so
it is a very special year for us as we are celebrating our 20th anniversary
in the community. May 3rd is our third annual Hike for Hospice Palliative
Care and it will take place at 1:00 pm at sites in both Northern Bruce Peninsula (meet at Lindsay Tract Trails) and South Bruce Peninsula (meet at
Wiarton Arena).
Many of us have been touched by death, dying, loss and caregiving
or know someone who has. Peninsula Hospice is working toward ensuring
that more Canadians, especially in our own community, receive the end-oflife care they wish for. Our staff and trained volunteers provide visiting
hospice and bereavement services to over 70 individuals and families each
year on the Peninsula. We also provide community education about matters related to end of life.
Bruce Peninsula Hospice is a non-profit, charitable organization
and our services are free to individuals and their families. We rely on the
support of service groups, individuals and memorial donations to fund our
work. Help us celebrate our 20th anniversary in whatever way you can…
with a donation, by becoming a volunteer or by joining us on our annual
Hike for Hospice on May 3rd. It will be a great chance to come out and be
with others in the community for a great day of fun and hiking. For hikers
in South Bruce Peninsula, join us at the Wiarton Arena for registration at
1:00, the hikes will start at 2:00 and will include a historical town walk, a
hike to the Corran and a more spirited hike for those that want to get a good
sweat on! Following the hikes, there will be refreshments and some great

The South Bruce Peninsula A.T.V. trails are now open for another
season and this year the club is celebrating 5 years since the ribbon cutting officially opening its first regional A.T.V. trail. The club now operates
a mixture of off road, back road and closed rail line encompassing over
160 kilometres of trail between Hwy 21 and Wiarton; Lake Huron to Georgian Bay. There are currently over 150 annual riding members plus several
hundred day pass riders, each adding to the local tourism base. New trail
riding opportunities are constantly being developed.
To celebrate, the club is holding an all members lunch at the Top
Notch Inn, Wiarton, Saturday June 6 at 12:30. All current club members
are welcome to attend, complimentary with your current membership.
Any new members joining by June 1 are also eligible and welcome. Simply
RSVP to [email protected] by June 1 and bring your current membership
card to the event. For members wanting to ride to the event, a group will be
departing Sauble School at 10:30.
The club is also hosting an end of summer ride open to everyone,
Saturday September 19 departing Sauble School at 10:00. Visitor day passes are available all season at regional outlets. Permit outlets, trail maps,

Energy Saving Tips for the
Summer

Summer brings not only thousands of tourists to the beach,
but also raising temperatures. Going from the cooler weather to the
warmer weather sometimes increases a businesses energy costs. No
matter what business you may have there is always way to cut down
the energy consumption. Here are a few tips that will not only cut
down on costs, but will make employees as well as customers more
comfortable.
Improve efficiency on your cooling and ventilation systems.
Using a programmable thermostat allows for easy regulation and
adjusting of temperatures throughout the day and night. To avoid
employees making changes on the set temperature, consider a cover
with a lock.
Closing window coverings and installing ceiling fans are
some of the low maintenance changes you can make to not only
make your employees comfortable while working, but customers as
well. The most frequent complaints from consumers about retailers
in the summer, is that they run the air conditioners too high making
it uncomfortable to shop for a longer period of time.
When in an office setting simple changes such as replacing
older lighting with newer LED or energy efficient light fixtures
will make a world of difference. Turning off computers and other
equiptment when leaving for the night or weekend can potentially
save you up to $44 per computer, per year*.
