NATIONAL POLICE WEEK MAY 10-16, 2015 In 1962, President John F. Kennedy and the United States Congress enacted into public law May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. On that day every year, Law Enforcement Officers around the country come together to remember their fellow brothers and sisters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty for their Communities. May 15th is one of only two days, under public law, that the U.S. flag is allowed to be lowered and flown at half-staff. The week that May 15th falls within is referred to as Nation Police Week. Events around the country occur with the final and main event being a National Memorial Service to remember the fallen taking place on May 15th in front of the U.S. Capital Building in Washington DC. This past year, 126 Law Enforcement Officers were killed in the line of duty across our nation. Those 126 Officers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, neighbors, coaches, friends, relatives, just went to work to do their job and never came home. We honor their sacrifice and their service, and we remind their survivors that their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Over the past week alone, four Police Officers have been viciously gunned done by criminals. 40 plus Officers this year already have been killed. This week, as you go about your jobs, please say a prayer for these officer’s families and that the current violence in our communities stop. To all the members of the Bethlehem Police Department and their families, active and retired, THANK YOU for your Service! Sincerely; Mark A. DiLuzio Chief of Police
