April, 2015 PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER Sam Barlow High School Bruce C Schmidt Jr., Principal sbhs.gresham.k12.or.us 503-258-4850 Inside AP News Bits and Pieces College and Career Open Enrollment MHCC Credits Senior Calendar Summer School Translation News and more ! From the Principal Spring break, that joyous time of year in Oregon when we hope that the previous sunshine was not just a tease, but rather, an ongoing pattern of warmth that will allow us to get outside without getting wet. While I don’t mind the rain, there is something that is simply amazing about a dry spring day in Oregon. I am sure your student is excited to take a break from school and enjoy some downtime with friends and family. Or more importantly, sleep. Realize that they have earned some downtime, and it will be important for them to be rested in order to make it through the final push of the school year. It has been a busy month at Sam Barlow with our winter athletics and activities coming to an end, and forecasting for the 2015-16 school year in full swing. As always, we are very proud of our students, their accomplishments, and their willingness to look to the future while planning their path for an upcoming school year. I am sure our seniors are beginning to “count the days” until graduation (I think there are 50 or so left at this point) as well as feeling a bit overwhelmed about what will be happening next year. After all, this will be the first time in their lives that school will be an option. If you are the parent of a senior, you may want to take a few minutes to chat with them in order to see how they are working through those feelings. A major project for us at Barlow over the past several weeks has been the revision of our dress code policy. This has been an involved process as we have worked with over 50 students and 12 staff members to modernize our dress code. So you know, the purpose of our dress code is to, “provide guidance to students and parents as to appropriate attire for school and at any school function.” In simple terms, our dress code is about teaching time and place. Our updated dress code was presented to students at our Winter Recognition Assembly and then shared and discussed with them during class. We will be enforcing the dress code universally throughout the building after spring break and wanted to be sure to let you know in case your student wanted to do some shopping. To view the dress code, and our student designed presentations, please visit our school website at: sbhs.gresham.k12.or.us. If you have any questions after reading the policy, and/or viewing the presentations, please feel free to contact us, as we are more than willing to share our rationale and process. As always, we appreciate and respect the role you take as a parent and Barlow community member. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, and I hope you all have an awesome spring! High school teachers that are most knowledgeable about graduation requirements teach summer school at SBHS. These teachers will have students work on Local Performance Assessments (LPA) required for graduation as well as course curriculum. The LPA is a method to show proficiency in core classes when students struggle with passing the state tests required for graduation. This is a great way to meet graduation requirements. Classes Offered (tentative) are listed below: (Class registration may be cancelled because of insufficient enrollment, lack of space, or the unavailability of a teacher.) Students will not be able to repeat a required class at Barlow if they have failed because the Gresham-Barlow School District’s budget does not allow for students to repeat failed classes. Students that have earned a failing grade in any of the following classes qualify for summer school. English 1-2, English 3-4, English 5-6, Physical Science, Biology, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 1.5 Registration & Tuition: Students should contact their counselors to register for and pick up registration materials. Payment to the bookkeeper is required to enroll in summer school. ($100 per class/ $75 per class for free/ reduced students) Enrollment is a first come, first served basis. Sam Barlow Theatre Department presents “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” by John Bishop on April 30th, May 1st and May 2nd at 7:30pm and May 3rd at 3:00pm. Please take a moment to watch this great video promo of our show: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=VQ4nCQySnU0 Set in the library of an old house, full of sliding panels, secret passageways and a mysterious German maid, this hilarious “who done it?” is an ingenious and wildly comic romp that pokes antic fun at the more ridiculous aspects of “show biz” and the corny thrillers of Hollywood’s heyday. The play is a non-stop barrage of laughter, as those assembled, untangle the mystery of the “Stage Door Slasher.” As the composer, lyricist and company prepare for a backers audition, a blizzard cuts off any possible retreat, bodies start to drop in plain sight, knives spring out of nowhere, masked figures drag their victims behind swiveling bookcases, and accusing fingers point in all directions. Audiences are sure to have a sidesplitting good time and a generous serving of the author’s biting, satiric and refreshingly irreverent wit. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students/seniors. You can reserve tickets online at http://sbhs.seatyourself.biz/ Speech and Debate Qualify March 2-5, Barlow kids did an exceptional job at the district tournament.
