The fete committee is working madly with a lofty goal of raising funds for air conditioning as well as trying to create a really
fun day for families (without the massive costs!). We are aiming to keep costs down so that everyone can have a fun day
without it breaking the bank. To do this though, we are relying heavily on our community for donations - donations of time,

All donations can be left at the library and will be greeted with good karma and oodles of adoration from the fete committee.

The uniform shop has a number of winter options available in stock. Our Cargo shorts also come in a full length pant (in Black), we stock
a tracksuit pant (also in black). And for the girls, we have a great quality opaque tight, these are really thick with a closed toe, only $7.50
per pair. After discussion at our last P&C meeting, Nici & I are currently sourcing another jumper option... please watch this space for

GOOD TUCKER NEWS –
Hi everyone. Hope you are loving term 2 here at Brighton. I know I am.
A few things you need to know. We will be stopping Sushi on Wednesday’s for winter. This is for a few reasons, but mainly
unfortunately we do not have enough helpers on Wednesday to keep it going. Winter is a challenging time for all of us being
parents. We get sick, our kids get sick, and without extra helpers to fill in when this happens, Sushi has to go. I am truly hoping
that come the warmer months we will have lots of willing helpers to bring Sushi back, as I know the kids (and the teachers) love
it! The good news is we will be replacing Sushi with some other things that are easier to prepare, so stay tuned while I come up
with a plan.
The Tuckshop will be CLOSED - Wednesday 20th May.

At Brighton, Every Child Matters Every Day
I hope our Mums enjoyed their day last Sunday!
We have had a great start to the term with classes settled and engaged in meaningful learning experiences
everyday.
I would like to thank the many staff who went ‘above and beyond the call’ to make sure we were ready for
business as usual last Monday after the huge storm on the previous Friday. Prep H is currently still relocated
while we wait for new carpet to be laid in their room.
Prep 2016 Information Evening
We will be holding an information session on Tuesday 16 June for parents of children who will be commencing
Prep next year. Children who were born between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2011 are eligible for Prep in
2016.
If your child will be starting Prep next year, or you know someone who is enrolling their child at Brighton
next year, please make sure we have the enrolment form. If we have contact details, we can inform parents
of upcoming events, as well as our orientation morning and enrolment interviews that we will hold later in
the year. Please remember you must provide a birth certificate before a child can be enrolled.
Library News
Book Fair is coming! Monday the 18th – Friday the 22nd of May in the library from 8.00am –
3.30pm each day. We will also be open each first break for students to browse and
purchase. We will remain open on Wednesday the 20th of May until 6.30pm.
Students will have the opportunity to browse and make a wish list during library time.
Credit card facilities will be available and we will also accept cash purchases. Please come along and browse the great
selection of fun and educational books and resources available. Each purchase benefits our school and allows us to keep our
resource collection renewed and up to date. Thanks to those lovely parents who have voluntered to assist. We are still
looking for more helpers, please conttact Sandra Berry-Porter [email protected] if you can help at any time throughout
the week.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual state-wide initiative for all students in Queensland
schools up to year 9.The Premier's Reading Challenge is not a competition but a way to
encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Through the challenge students are
given an opportunity to develop their appreciation of the English language and are encouraged
to explore and enjoy a wide range of literary texts.
Children and students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the
receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland. This year Brighton
State School will attempt 100% participation across the school. This means all students will
register and record keeping of books read will be managed at school.
Students from prep to year 2 will read or experience 20 books, years 3 – will read 20 books and
years 5 and 6 will read 15 books. The Premier’s Reading Challenge starts 19th May and finishes 28th August. For more

Media Consent and Religious Instruction (RI) Permission
New permission forms for media consent and Religion were sent home towards the end of last term and again
this week. If you have not returned these forms, please do so as soon as possible. It is important that these
permission re up to date. We are waiting to commence our RI lessons until we have the permission forms
back.

ICAS tests will be conducted in Term 2 and Term 3 for participating students. Students who sit the tests will
receive a certificate and an individual report containing detailed diagnostic data. The dates for the ICAS

English - Tuesday, 28th July / Mathematics - Tuesday, 11th August
Library Borrowing
We have a beautiful collection of fiction and non-fiction books available for students to brorrow from our library. Weekly
library borrowing is an important habit for students to develop and we encourage all students to borrow and return
regularly. Students need a waterproof library bag to transport books too and from school. Please see below for our

District Cross Country
After several cancellations, the event was held last Friday 8 May. Our team of 43 students participated and proudly
represented Brighton State School. Well done to all of these students. A special mention must be made of Max M who
waited to help a fellow Brighton student who was experiencing difficulty running. Max sacrificed his own performance to
look out for his friend.
District Touch Football
Congratulations to Preston and Zac B, Cailtyn and Ella who have been selected in the Bramble Bay Touch Football team.
They will compete in the regional touch football carnival in the next few weeks.
Running Club
Running club will continue each Tuesday at 8.10am on the top oval until further notice.
Music
From the Master Teacher - Renate Schultz
Junior choir has met for the first time this term with our new song ”Simply Scrumptious”. Due to
upcoming excursions Junior Choir will be re-scheduled for Tuesday first breaks. I will send a
message around to the classrooms to let the younger children know when this happens.
Recently I had the privilege to observe wonderful
Miss Hewett and the hard working Prep H students involved
in ‘Word Work’.
Senior choir are competing on Wednesday 20th May in the 2015 Metropolitan Region
Choral Fanfare Festival. The heats are held at Kedron State High School. All notes
were handed out last fortnight and buses have been booked. Please ensure that your
child has returned their permission note or they will be unable to attend.
The class did an amazing job by:
• counting words in a sentence
• matching a picture to a spoken word
• finding a picture that started with the same sound as
another picture
• identifying rhyming words
• counting syllables
• finding the word parts in a compound word
We would love an audience so if you are in the vicinity of Kedron High School our session time is from 9am.
We do not have a set performance time within that session.
The first year instrumental children were handed some information regarding the Northside Junior Band Blitz.
This is a workshop offering your child an opportunity to experience playing in a large concert band and feeds
directly into my plans to begin the Junior concert band in term 3.Permission notes and money is due in to the
office by Friday 15th May.
Prep students are singing and listening to lullabies and practising using our sweet
singing voices while the year 1 students are playing on tuned percussion instruments
(glockenspiels) simple 2 note songs we have been singing. This contour approach on a
3 lined staff is a first step toward reading traditional staff notation.
Miss Hewett kept the students engaged in their learning by
keeping a good pace to this part of the lesson known as a
warm up.
The 2/3 students are aurally recognising simple pentatonic melodies and writing the
rhythmic pattern of phrases from known songs, while the yr 6 students are preparing to compose their own 4
bar composition. One students’ composition will be chosen and we will all learn and present that melody on
tuned percussion instruments.
Year 4/5 students are singing 2-part canon and and performing on recorder and untuned percussion
instruments ‘Calypso’.
In just five minutes the class had practised all these
important foundational skills that will help them well on their
way in their own literacy development!

SU Holiday Camp - In the next school holidays there is a great SU camp called 'Winter Mapleton Adventure Camp' happening in
the second week of the holidays (6th-10th July). This is a camp for grades 5-7's and includes activities like - canoeing, rock climbing,
archery, nerf wars, a carnival, sports, games and lots more. Over the years we have had many students attend this camp, and they have

Behaviour News - Kylie Joyce ( Support Teacher: Literacy and Numeracy & Behaviour Co-ordinator)
What are behaviour books and how can my child’s name be written in it?
As part of our Responsible Behaviour Management Plan each classroom and our playground areas have a behaviour book
which is simply a tool we use to track behaviour incidents within the school.
A student may be written into a behaviour book for a number of reasons and some examples are: repeatedly being disruptive
in class, consistently breaking a rule after many reminders, playing in out of bounds areas, unfair play, repeatedly off task or
being defiant.
Students are not written in the behaviour books on the first occasion. They are given a number of visual reminders ( hand
signals such as finger to the lips to signal quiet, facial expression, pointing to what they should be doing, light tap on the
desk) and verbal reminders ( reminder of rule, calling of name, quiet chat at the child’s desk). Students are often given
warnings and another visual reminder (name on the board) before their name is recorded in the behaviour book. It is not
taken lightly as we want our students to make good choices not punish them constantly, which is why we provide so many
chances for a student to change the incorrect choice they are making at the time.
The first time a student’s name is written in the behaviour book after repeated reminders and verbal warnings it is
considered a written warning and a parent behaviour notification note is sent home. If a student’s name is written a second
time the consequence is that they will not advance to the next level on our reward chart with the rest of the class. However,
next cycle if they have followed our rules, they continue their progress and move up to the next level. This means a student
can still achieve one of our top behaviour levels Bronze and Silver. Our teachers discuss this with the students and praise and
encourage them to continue to make good choices.
Celebrations of Learning
Prep B High Tea
Last Thursday evening Prep B held a High Tea for the Mums from the class.
The evening started off with the presentation of sentences written by the
children stating why they love their mum. The mums had to try to guess
which sentence was
written about them.
The class took on
the role of waiters
and waitresses to
serve their mums
with some light
refreshments.
The night finished
off with the children giving their mum a special Mother’s Day gift. Thanks
to all the Mums who were able to come along on the night.
Year 1M
We are very grateful to the wonderful helpers who come in and assist with Art in the classroom. In the last two weeks
the Michell family (Lanah in our class) have made some amazing things with the children. Lanah’s Mum, Heather, came
and helped the children to create lovely sea horse pictures. They are hanging in the room if you want to come up and
have a look – they add so much colour.
Last Friday Lanah’s Grandma, Lyn, helped us to make some beautiful Mother’s Day presents which the children took
home for Mother’s Day.
A big thank you to both of the ladies for providing ideas and materials. It was also very nice to have you in our room.
Year 2/3S~By Solomon and Amelia.
In 2/3S we have been practising skip counting and patterns in Maths. We have also done an experiment which involved pieces of bread and our very
own dirty and clean hands. This experiment taught us all about the importance of washing our hands before we eat. Our class also has four Dollarmites
Achievement Certificates for having the most bankers in our class. We have also been busy practising using conjunctions to make our sentences longer and
more interesting.
Year 2/3C – In 2/3C this week we have been looking at 3D and 2D shapes. 3D shapes have faces, edges and corners
while 2D shapes have sides and corners. With mother’s Day last week, we have reflected on what our wonderful
mothers mean to us and created portraits of our gorgeous mums to give to them.
4/5R Round Up - By James and Ben - Have a nice week!
This week we have been doing some NAPLAN Preparation. Also we have been writing persuasive texts, Dogs or Cats- Which are the better pets and
Do Ghosts Really Exist?
For Maths we have been learning about mixed and improper Fractions. For maths challenge we are all very competitive with our six times tables.
Congratulations to all the Cross Country runners, the people who have made it to St Pauls School include Ben, James, Taylah, Wendy, Kye M, Kye T,
Mathew, Tom and Sharae. In History we have started to learn about first contact, how the Aboriginal people and European people treated each other.
Year 6 Classes - Year Six have been very busy this week. We are revising our knowledge of fractions and decimals and trying to
use it in real life situations. In English we are analysing advertisements; looking at what makes them effective and which ones we
like the best. Our history unit is now covering an interesting concept of migration, and the reasons people have migrated to our
country. Science is always a buzz, and making our own circuits has been fun.
Salvation Army Leadership Breakfast

On Tuesday 28th April, we and Chappy Rachael attended a
Salvation Army Breakfast at Taigum where we learnt
about the red shield appeal and leadership. Mr Rod
Chiapello, who owns Bracken Ridge McDonalds and is a
great supporter of the local community, spoke on his
experience of leadership and gave us many tips on how to
be effective leaders in our school community. We were
able to present these leadership tips to our classes. A
couple of tips that stood out to us are: “In life make sure
what you’re doing is what you want to do – have passion!”
and “Leadership is to serve and to get meaningful things
done.” We also learnt more about what the Salvation
Army does, such as: helping those who are homeless,
providing accommodation, YOS (youth outreach services),
court support, a school for those students who have been
dis-engaged from regular school and many programs for
various issues. At the event, we showed our interest in
partaking in the red shield appeal, which is an annual
fundraiser, so we can support the above mentioned services
Year 2/3J
We have been busy preparing our Year 3 students for NAPLAN, making sure they are familiar and comfortable with the set-out and
time constraints involved. Year 2’s have also been developing their skills in persuasive writing! Some students have shown a real
strength in this area!
In History, we are exploring our local heritage and have been looking at photographs of significant historical sites in Sandgate. This
has been very interesting and students were surprised to know what some sites were originally used for! Ask your child to give you
a quick history lesson.
Year 2/3K
In 2/3K we have been doing work on our story writing. We have discussed what noun groups are and how they can help make our
writing more interesting. We have even tried to come up with some interesting ones ourselves. For example, creepy clanking
skeletons. The other thing we have discussed are sizzling starts that Mr Simpson worked on with us. We have been looking at some
pictures and attempting to write some interesting story starters to inspire our narrative writing. It's fun, try it at home. In Mathematics,
we have been exploring 3D shapes. We really enjoyed making the 3D shapes with plasticine and matchsticks. This helps us to learn how
many edges and corners each of the shapes has. We have been very busy!
