Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we head to a well-deserved Easter
Vacation, a myriad of activities continue to
fill the College landscape.
On Monday, we conducted our inter house
annual cross country. Congratulations to all
students who participated in either the 3.5
km competitive run or the slightly less arduous participation
walk. Congratulations to all our age champions and those
students selected to represent the College later next term.
Congratulations also to Morgan House on their victory this year.
A big thank you to Miss Stone for her organisation of the day
and all staff who assisted in the success of the carnival. A
special mention also goes to Mr Wallwork who won the
Master’s event. He in fact was the only competitor. Details and
results of the cross country are in this week’s gazette.
After the holidays, on the 24th April in period 4, the College
will conduct an ANZAC service to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. In addition, on Saturday
the 25th April, on ANZAC day, students at Brisbane Bayside
State College have been invited to march at the dawn service.
Further details of this will be advertised in the first week back
and students must wear full formal uniform if they wish to
represent the College at this march.
Mr Wilson has secured a position in Central Office for the
remainder of the 2015 school year as a Principal Advisor for the
Organisational Transformation team. (Formerly Great Results,
Great Teachers project). We wish Mr Wilson every success
in his new role and no doubt his expertise and presence will
be missed at our College. In his absence, Mr Petterson, our
Guidance Officer, has been successful in being appointed to
the Acting Deputy Principal’s role. A new Guidance Officer will
be appointed in the near future. In addition, Miss Canavan will
be taking some long service leave after the holidays and will be
back filled by the return of Mrs Taylor, who is returning from
leave.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Miss Ashfield
goodbye and good luck. Miss Ashfield is leaving us this week
to pursue other professional interests after five years at the
College. Miss Ashfield will be fondly remembered for her love
of teaching, particularly in the areas of Maths/Science and
we will particularly miss her passion for colourful clothing and
hairstyles! All the very best in your future endeavours Miss
Ashfield. Mrs Hodgen completes her teaching contract with us
this term. Thank you Mrs Hodgen for your contribution to our
College.
Term reports will issued this week via email. If the College has
no email recorded the report will be posted. Parent/Teacher
interviews will be held on Tuesday the 28th April. Parent/
Teacher bookings can be made through the College website
and further details can be found in this week’s edition.
Term 2 commences on Monday the 20th April for all year levels.
I hope you all have a wonderful Easter break and a safe and
enjoyable holiday and I look forward to an exciting and
rewarding second term.
Regards,
Darren Wallwork
NAPLAN
In readiness for our official National Literacy and Numeracy
testing (NAPLAN) to be administered in Week 4 of Term 2 on
the 12th, 13th and 14th of May, students in Year 7 and 9 will
be completing 2 practice tests in the first week of the term.
Tests to be completed will be the Language Conventions on
Wednesday period 1 and Numeracy Calculator on Thursday in
period 1.
This is an important opportunity for students to become familiar
with the processes and expectations which will remain
operational around the testing including how to complete test
books, equipment required, rooming and test behaviour. As
such, can you please support your son or daughter by ensuring
they have a calculator, eraser and lead pencil (not pacer) on
these days.
Students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their
parent/carer. This is a matter for consideration by individual
parents/ carers in consultation with the College. Withdrawals
are intended to address issues such as religious beliefs and
philosophical objections to testing. A formal notification in the
manner of completion of a Notice of Parent Withdrawal Form
must be received by the principal prior to the testing. Students
are to please see Deputy Principals/Ms Strong in the main
administration office for these forms.

BBSC Interhouse Cross Country Carnival!
Fun, Fitness and Fantastic Prizes
On Friday the 30th of March, BBSC held our annual cross
country carnival. The Cross country was run here at school
and throughout our local neighbourhood. Students were able
to choose to compete in the 3.5km competitor’s course, or a
1.5km participant’s course.
The competition between students was fierce and many of the
events ended with a sprint towards the finish line. All students
who completed either race received points for their house. In

April Autism Awareness Month
BBSC library was fortunate to host the noted Brisbane author
Pam Rushby on Tuesday 17 March.
Pam’s books include: “When the Hipchicks Went to War"
(Hachette 2009) Notable Book CBCA Awards 2010, winner
Ethel Turner Prize NSW Premier's Literary Awards 2010;
"The Horses Didn't Come Home" (HarperCollins 2012)
Short-listed Queensland Literary Awards 2012, Notable Book
CBCA Awards 2013; "Flora's War" (Ford Street Publishing
2013) Notable Book CBCA Awards 2014 and "The
Ratcatcher's Daughter" HarperCollins 2014) Short-listed
Queensland Literary Awards 2014.
Pam shared her expertise and years of writing experience with
our junior students. She said she was very impressed with the
“sizzling sentence starters” produced by our Yr 9’s with help
from her expert mentoring. Yr. 7’s and 8’s were treated to a
PowerPoint showcasing Pam’s research on conditions leading
to the bubonic plague in Brisbane in the 1900’s. This was the
background for her book “The Ratcatcher’s daughter” featured
as one of this year’s “Reader’s Cup Competition” books. Year
7 and 8 students are reminded that there are still positions
available for those who would like to enter this prestigious
interschool and inter-province reading competition. Five books
have been chosen for the competition and teams compete to
see if they can answer questions about the stories correctly.
Both staff and students have benefitted enormously from the
fascinating workshops held at Brisbane Bayside State College
by Pam Rushby.
Every person with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is different
to another and has their own way of seeing the world, which
makes them interesting and unique.
When someone has ASD, it means that their brains are wired
differently to other people. However, the symptoms of ASD vary
enormously from person to person.
People with ASD find it difficult to interact socially and
communicate with others. As they often have difficulty
understanding what other people are feeling and what interests
others, they might say the wrong thing. They might talk for a
long time about a topic they really like, as they are unaware
that the topic is of no interest to others. They may not use
gestures and body language in the way that other people do.
For example they may not use eye contact and may not smile.
However, their ability to communicate can vary tremendously,
with some people with Autism having no or limited speech,
and others having extensive vocabularies. Although people with
ASD can find it difficult to talk to people and make friends, they
still have the same emotions as anybody else and love to have
friends, even if it’s hard.
People with ASD also like things to happen the same way. They
might take the same route to school or the shops, or line up
their toys in a particular order. If something is out of place or if
routines change without warning, they can get upset or worried.
They may also be bothered by sudden loud sounds, bright
lights or unexpected touch that do not bother others. They may
become upset if someone hugs them or talks too quickly or
loudly. They often have intense interests in particular topics and
may be extremely knowledgeable about their special interest
areas. They can also have an amazing memory for detail.
How common is Autism?
Family and Child Connect
In our commitment to working with families in the support of
our children’s wellbeing, we are often faced with a need to
assist a family with some help, but not sure of the availability
of services within our community to provide it. 2015 will see
the Queensland Government implement a new initiative where
the goal is to build stronger families and keep children safe at
home.
The Family and Child Connect initiative is a community based
service that help support families by connecting them to the
services they need when they need them. Please have a read
A prevalence study by the Australian Advisory Board on Autism
Spectrum Disorders in 2007 concluded that one in 160
Australian children aged between 6 and 12 years have an
Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some recent studies suggest this
figure could be around 1:100
That means the condition is now more common than cerebral
palsy, diabetes, deafness, blindness and leukaemia put
together.
