MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR GOLD RUSH DAY (FRIDAY MAY 1) It is time again to rustle up a costume and prepare your child to experience Gold Rush California. As part of our continuing study of migration and immigration, we will be studying the westward movement in the United States. We will look at reasons for heading west, routes potential miners took to get to the gold fields, and life in the Gold Rush towns and camps. All of Global Ed. will participate in a day in Gold Rush California. Students dressed in costume will visit an old-‐
fashioned school, a Chinese laundry, a mining camp to pan for gold, a saloon, and a theater. After working up an appetite in the morning, the children will gather for a big, Gold Rush luncheon. We will be calling on our parent volunteers who signed up for this event last fall to help with lunch set-‐up and with the BBQ. Specific assignments for food contributions to the luncheon as well as costume suggestions will be sent home in the near future. GOLD RUSH DAY IS FRIDAY MAY 1. GLOBAL ED. SQUARE DANCE (FRIDAY MAY 1: 6:30-‐8;30 PM) As part of our Gold Rush celebration, we will be having a square dance complete with a square dance caller and a band the evening of our Gold Rush Day, May 1. We will be swinging our partners at 6:30 pm in Skyline’s Activity Center. We encourage all of the Global Ed. families to attend. These fun evening events really help to build community in Global Ed., so we hope to see you the evening of Friday May 1. SOLBOL SUCCESS! SKYLINE’S OPEN HOUSE (WEDNESDAY APRIL 29 6-‐7 PM) You are invited to celebrate your child’s learning this year at Skyline’s Open House on April 29 from 6-‐7 PM. Food vendors will be on Skyline’s blacktop beginning at 5 PM if your family wishes to have dinner at Skyline before visiting the classrooms. There will also be a mini-‐open house for incoming kindergarten students to Global Ed program from 5:30-‐
6PM. UPCOMING TESTING Children in third through sixth grade in the Global Ed. program will be participating in state testing from April 13-‐24 along with the other students in the Solana Beach School District. The new tests will be taken on a computer and are aligned with the common core state standards. It is important to note that this is the first year of a new test. Global Ed. students will be the first to take the test at Skyline. As always, these tests represent s snapshot of your child’s learning. Please keep in mind your child’s overall academic and social growth this year as your child enters testing week. There is much to celebrate when you look at the big picture of your child’s
learning.

PRIMARY GLOBAL ED NEWS SHARING SCHEDULE • April 13-‐17: Open Sharing • April 20-‐24: Tall Tale Sharing • April 27-‐May 1: Open Sharing byline
Lorem Ipsum
TALL TALE SHARING (APRIL 20-‐24) As our country grew west with the movement of pioneers and those
seeking their fortunes in the California gold fields, so did the tall tales
about the men and women who faced the hardships of moving west.
Your child will be studying the tall tales of famous American folk
heroes and the exaggerated tales of characters like Paul Bunyan and
Pecos Bill. For this sharing, your child will receive an outline of a tall
tale with deleted words and phrases. S/he will use this story frame to
create a new version of a tall tale by writing in new words and phrases
that keep the exaggerated tone of a tall tale. Please have your child
practice reading his/her new tall tale before sharing day.

SAFETY AT SKYLINE In light of the recent event at Skyline, it is important for all of us to be mindful of safe practices concerning our children. Skyline already has policies in place to ensure that adults are accounted for on campus. It is imperative that we all follow the policy of checking into the office and receiving a visitor’s badge before entering classrooms. It is also important to make sure that your child is aware of his/her after school plan and where your child is to meet an adult at the end of the school day. Supervision for children is not available before 8:35 AM on school days. Children shouldn’t be on campus until that time but if they must arrive earlier they are to wait in the patio for adults who will walk them to the playground at 8:35. It is important to note that there is supervision at the end of the day for those children being picked up by car or walking home via the crosswalk at Glencrest or Lomas Santa Fe. Teachers do not supervise children playing on the playground after school. All children should proceed to their afterschool program or home at the end of the day. Recently, our superintendent and principal have worked to revamp safety policies and procedures for Skyline. As a result of this effort, you will note a few changes at Skyline when you return from spring break. Dell Street will no longer be used as an entrance and exit to Skyline. If your child uses Dell Street for pick up or for walking home, a new plan will need to be made by your family. Car pick up will continue in the front of the school supervised by several teachers. Also, a fence with a gate at the front of the school will most likely be installed during the break. Adults coming on campus during the school day will need to check into the office and receive a badge and then proceed to the gate where office staff will buzz them through the gate. While it may take a bit of time to adjust to the new procedures at Skyline, we can all be thankful that our campus will be even safer for our children. 4
