Dates to Remember Mon.23rd to Frid.27th March • Year 2 to 6 Swimming Lessons See page 6 for swimming timetable Friday 10th April • Last day of Term 1 • ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Afternoon We continue to have issues in our carparks. We are well aware our carparks are difficult in the afternoons. They are congested, traffic is blocked and backed up, people are frustrated, etc. But there is not much else we can do about it! Over the years the school has tried a variety of options, met with the traffic authority, had discussions with police – and the best outcome each time continues to be the current arrangements! This is my 8th school and everyone of them has issues with traffic arrangements in the afternoons. It is part of school life for approximately 20 minutes each day. We ask that all parents and carers: a. Be patient and understanding; b. Park & Pick Up if that suits you; c. Use Drive Thru but don’t get out of the car – stop, door open, kids gets in and then you carefully drive off; d. ONLY turn LEFT at the exit and go up and around the roundabout - this keeps the traffic flowing; e. Stagger your arrival. Staff are on duty until 3.30, so come a little later to avoid the mayhem! CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to two soccer teams who participated in the Catholic School Soccer Carnival last Sunday. Special thanks to Damien Webb for his coordination and to the players and parents who assisted on the day. www.sca.act.edu.au P 6294 1860 F 6294 4613 BOOKCLUB CLOSED TODAY NO MORE ORDERS CAN BE ACCEPTED SATURDAY MORNING NETBALL STARTS SAT 28th MARCH Volunteer of the week KIM SENINI E [email protected] By striving to ‘Be the Light’, the community of Saint Clare of Assisi believes that Jesus Christ challenges us to excellence, in a united and caring environment. 18th March •Week 7•Term 1• 2015 St Clare of Assisi Primary School Conder, ACT BE THE LIGHT NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN) The National Assessment Program is the measure through which governments, education authorities and schools can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year, in the second full week in May. The 2014 NAPLAN tests will be held in Week 3 of Term 2 on Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 May. Please check the following timetable which outlines the times at which the tests will be sat. Please ensure that if you have a child in Year 3 or 5 that appointments are organised outside testing times. A make-up day will be held on Friday 16th May for students who missed a section of the testing or were absent on a particular test day. The results of these tests will provide useful information for us as teachers and you as parents. They provide a snapshot from one time on one day, which will be analysed in conjunction with all other assessment, to help inform teachers in their ongoing efforts to address the literacy and numeracy needs of their students. A NAPLAN 2014 National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy, Information for Parents pamphlet was sent home on Wednesday to parents of students in Years 3 and 5. LITERACY LUNACY This week Literacy Online At St Clare of Assisi we are integrating several online learning programs into our classrooms. We have Reading Eggs for Kinder to Year 3 and Lesson Zone for Years 4-6. Students should have been given logins for these programs, please see your classroom teacher for these if required. Classroom teachers may also be using online learning programs such as Skoolbo and Study Ladder. We all know most children love to use technology and it is certainly an important part of student’s education now. Below I have given some links to some websites that have games and activities to enhance literacy skills or engage children with literacy. Enjoy exploring one or two of the websites with your child whilst learning at the same time. SCA fielded two teams in the World Cup Division, a combined Years 3 - 4 as well as a combined Years 5 - 6 team. After a bit of a chaotic start due to some last minute field changes both teams played 4 games each against other Catholic schools from the ACT. While both teams had mixed results from their games (including a draw in each division) the children had a great time playing and competing. The sportsmanship displayed by both SCA teams was excellent to see with players encouraging each other for good play and congratulating the other teams at the end of their matches. Thankyou to all the parents who helped out during the Carnival. No doubt there were more than a few tired children (and parents) that night. 18th March •Week 7•Term 1• 2015 COUNSELLOR’S CORNER COOL KIDS The Cool Kids program is a skills-based program that teaches children (6-12yrs) and their parents how to better manage the child’s anxiety.
