Principal’s Pen
Welcome to what is an
exci ng
week
at
Caravonica
State
School. Last year I
a ended my very first
Big Breakfast, open morning and
Under 8s Day at Caravonica and it has
le% las ng memories! So what
happens on Wednesday? By now you
should have returned your booking
form for the big breakfast star ng at
7:30am on Wednesday morning.
On the morning present your cket at
the entrance of the main covered area,
at this stage your hand will be
stamped. Then you can get your
breakfast items and sit with your
family and friends and enjoy your
breakfast. Whilst you are dining there
will be entertainment provided by our
school band, string orchestra and
performance choirs. The children have
been so busy prac sing for their big
event. The live performances add to
the atmosphere! Tickets will be on
sale at the entrance if you have
forgo en to pre-purchase.
Once the breakfast is over it is back to
classrooms. The Preps, 1s and 2s will
be off to Under 8s with our playgroup
families and the 3s-6s will run you
through a warm up or reading group
rota on so you can see our classes and
students in ac on.
“
This is a wonderful way to share our
school with all our families and I
certainly look forward to cha7ng to
you over breakfast and cheering on
our talented students as they perform
for us!
Today I had the opportunity to spend
me at District Office with Principals
from other high performing schools in
the region. We spent the
me
deconstruc ng what makes a good
wri ng warm up (consolida on) and
wri ng session. It is great to have the
opportunity to calibrate my thinking
with that of my peers and to see what
is happening in other schools in and
around Cairns. It is also great to know
that our school is doing well and that
we have a good understanding of what
cons tutes
a
warm
up
or
consolida on. The importance of these
consolida on sessions cannot be
underes mated - it is vital our children
have mul ple opportuni es to revisit
our teaching as we move concepts into
their long term memory (where we
want things to s ck). It is through
repe on, the recalling of facts, and
the applica on of skills taught that this
will happen. It is the very essence of
high quality teaching and is part of the
non nego able teaching at Caravonica
School.
Hope to see you tonight at the P&C
mee ng!
Enjoy your week, Michelle

Teaching tolerance
Provide opportunities: Give them opportunities to play
and work with others of diverse backgrounds. Children
learn firsthand that everyone has something to contribute
and we really aren’t that different in our thinking and
living. Select books, toys, music, art, and videos carefully.
Keep in mind the powerful effect that the media and pop
culture have on shaping attitudes.
Build self-esteem: Help your children feel good about
themselves. Kids who feel badly about themselves often
treat others badly. Kids with strong self-esteem value and
respect themselves and are more likely to treat others with
respect, too. Help your child to feel
accepted, respected, and valued.
Pirate Day Friday
Pirate Day Friday is a national fundraising
day raising funds and awareness for
research into the cure and prevention of
Childhood Brain Tumours. The event takes
place annually on the second Friday in
June. On the day, primary schools from all
over the country host a Pirate themed free dress day. This
means the kids (and the teachers) get the chance to dress
up as pirates for the day in exchange for a gold coin
donation.
Fluoro Disco
The Caravonica Student Council will be holding a disco at
school in the second last week of this term. The disco will
have a fluoro theme and students are asked to come
dressed in their best fluoro outfits. Make sure you save the
date for this event. A note with more information and
payment options will be sent home soon.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING
The purpose of PBL is to facilitate a school-wide process
that promotes behavioural, social and academic success for
all at Caravonica State School.
PBL focus for week 5 and 6: Keeping our School Beautiful
We all love to play and work in a clean environment.
Students at Caravonica can ensure this continues by:
•
Placing their rubbish into the provided rubbish bins
•
If they see other rubbish on the ground place it into
the bins
Double gotcha’s to those students who help keep our
environment clean!
