Principal’s Pen
As we complete term 1 @ Caravonica I would like to
acknowledge the hard work and tremendous efforts of the
team I work alongside, the great children I get to say good
morning to every day, and the very supportive school
community working with us as we strive to be the best we
can be. Every day I am reminded of the commitment, the professionalism
and the dedication of the staff here at Caravonica - and the way our
students always come first. From the office staff to the teachers, the
teacher aides, the groundsman and the cleaners – it’s all about our kids! I
am equally thrilled at the hard work of our students and their absolute
commitment to improve and always give their best. And last but not least the support the school receives from every family is also appreciated.
As we head into the 2 week break it is timely to remind all families of the
behavioural expectations of students at our school so these can be
reinforced at home whilst we are all enjoying the break. Our school is
committed to providing a high quality education to every child and our
school behaviour code was established so that our students can learn in a
caring and safe environment. Our code outlines the expectations of all
students and is about high standards, order, self-discipline and calm. Our
expectations are framed around 3 rules * be caring
* be safe
* be successful
Whilst these expectations apply to all our students, we do acknowledge that
some students will require extra support and management to help them to
learn the skills necessary to participate successfully. However, having said
that every teacher has the right to teach and every student has the right to
learn and feel safe, and these rights are protected and valued at our school.
Please take some time to review these behavioural expectations with your
child/ren over the upcoming two week break.
Thought of the Week
Do enjoy your two weeks away from school. Be safe, and we look forward
to catching up with everyone on Monday 20th April when school resumes
for term 2, 2015.
You’re never too old, too
wacky, too wild, to pick up
a book and read to a child.
PS/ A huge goodbye to Briony who begins maternity leave at the end of
this week. It has been great to have you as part of the team – enjoy the
break and best wishes on the impending arrival of bubby#2.

Parents have needs too
• Let others support you when you’re down - it’s often said
you need a community to raise a child, but it is also true that
the community can help you in this sometimes difficult task.
• Educate yourself on being a better parent - often our only
model of parenting may have been what our parents did. It is
worthwhile attending parent classes, seeking advice, talking
to other parents to ensure you are well equipped for the
challenges that children provide.
Remember: We are all important. No one is more important
than the next person. Just as children require their needs to be
met so do parents. So, factor in time each day to meet your
needs - Happy parents can only benefit the entire family.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING
The purpose of PBL is to facilitate a school-wide process that
promotes behavioural, social and academic success for all at CSS
PBL focus for week 10 (T1) and 1 & 2 (T2): Playground Play:
We all love to play and work in a caring and safe environment.
Students at Caravonica can ensure this continues by:
•
Safe - Wear your hat, follow the games rules, use
equipment in designed manner
•
Caring - Keep hands and feet to yourself
•
Successful - Play in your year level area
GOTCHA AWARDS
Gotcha Awards: Congratulations to Makayla - 1C, Sean
- 2C and David - 1B.
Total points for each house: Barrons - 160, Cascades 141 and Placids - 163.
CARAVONICA RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM
Caravonica have finished (after a false finish last week) their
2015 Development Cup campaign with another tight game
against league leaders Redlynch. After a flying start that got the
Cane Cutters to 10-0 up, Redlynch fought back strongly to win
26-20.
Again, everyone tried their hardest for the entire game and nearly
pulled off the upset. Joe was a monster again in defence and
attack while Justin pulled off some bone crunching tackles
against some hard running big forwards in the opposition.
Drayden, Rithysen and Beau were again sneaky in attack each
scoring a valuable try as did Justin with a barnstorming run.
Jack and Dylan S were steady and patient on the wings with Jack
doing a great job in several different positions throughout the
game. Forwards Braith, Phoenix and Byron all worked tirelessly
as did our hard running backs Brody, Dylan B, Josh and Kody
who alternated between centre and second row according to what
the team needed. New boys Kade and Santi tried hard – I wish
we had had them for the whole season!
If nothing else, hopefully all players had fun during the season
and learnt about what playing a team sport is all about. Every
player needs to understand that they have a special place in our
team and a roll to play to make the team a successful unit. No
single player’s job is more important or less important than
anyone else’s. The mighty Cane Cutter players understood that
and that’s why we had the most successful season in
Caravonica’s Development Cup history. Congratulations boys!
Until next season, Mr Lees
HOMESTAY - Families Needed
The aim of the Home Stay program is to give students a greater
understanding of people throughout the world. The two (2) night
stay provides them the opportunity to experience our culture and
lifestyle on a personal level. It’s also a great fundraiser for the
school and this benefits all the children.
The group of students from the USA arrives on Saturday afternoon
11th July and departs on Monday morning 13th July. This is the
last weekend of the school holidays. A dinner will be held at
school for host families and students when the group arrives on
Saturday.
For further information or to register your interest please collect an
information booklet from the office, or contact Naomi ASAP.
Information is also posted on the noticeboard.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE PROGRAM
Get your family active and eating well.
Local families can now sign up the free healthy lifestyle program
called PEACH™ - Parenting, Eating and Activity for Child
Health. Registrations are now open for a group to commence in
Cairns in term 2, 2015.
The program is fun for kids and helps parents and carers make
healthy eating and activity a part of every-day life. It is available
to families with a child aged between 5-11 years who is above a
healthy weight their age.
It consists of 10 group sessions that run for 90 minutes each in
Edge Hill Primary School. The first 9 sessions are held weekly
within the school term. Ongoing individualised family support is
offered through the second half of the program ending with one
final group session.
Some of the topics covered include nutrition skills, relationships
with food and eating, changing family lifestyle behaviours and
making healthy eating affordable. While the parent sessions are
taking place, children enjoy active play with a trained child
physical activity facilitator.
The program is funded by the Queensland government and being
delivered by the Queensland University of Technology.
If you would like more information about the PEACH™
program or to register please contact free call 1800 263 519 or

OBSTATHON 2015
Thanks go to everyone involved for making this
year’s obstathon another resounding success.
Participation levels seemed very high and lots of
parents came along to cheer the runners on. Special
thanks to Glen and Sue for assisting with the set up
and pack away, to Naomi, Hope and Telly for
‘manning’ the hoses, and also to Cyclone Nathan who
constantly threatened to crash the party but chose to
go elsewhere. A large amount of the donations have
already come in, which is great. Please have any
outstanding money in by this Thursday, 2nd April at
the latest so it can all be squared away before the
holidays. It should be placed in an envelope on which
is written the child’s name, class, how much money is
inside and the word “Obstathon”. The envelope is to
be taken directly to the office, NOT to the class
teacher. Thanks again.
