Evidence-Based Examination and Intervention Strategies
Vestibular disorders and dizziness are prevalent in the adult population. Approximately 8 million American adults report
chronic problems with balance while 2.4 million report a chronic problem with dizziness. Overall, vertigo from a vestibular
problem accounts for a third of all dizziness reported to health care professionals. Consequences of dizziness and balance
impairments can lead to limited social interaction, increased isolation, decreased activity level, and secondary disability.
This evidence-based hands-on workshop will provide participants with an understanding of the vestibular system
and its interactions with sensory balance structures that are vital for stability and function. Disorders of the vestibular
system and secondary dysfunction will be reviewed. This workshop is designed to teach participants to perform a basic
comprehensive examination of the vestibular and sensory systems, interpret findings, and develop a treatment plan with
evidence-based interventions to help maximize functional outcomes in this patient population. Hands-on lab instruction
will complement workshop content and provide the therapist with clinical tools.
