CALL FOR PROPOSALS—2015-16
UNDERGRADUATE SOCIAL JUSTICE FELLOWSHIPS
We invite applications from sophomore and junior students for an exciting fellowship
opportunity during 2015-16.
Applicants will have the opportunity to carry out research or projects related to social
justice, which can be in any discipline. A complete application should include the
following:
Ø A proposal of no more than three single-spaced pages in length. The proposal
should include:
o Description of the proposed project or research
o An explanation of the relationship between the proposed project or
research and social justice
o The aim of the research or project
o A listing of all other persons or entities with whom the student will be
collaborating, e.g., if the project involves an agency
o A timeline for completion of the proposed research/project
Ø An explanation of no more than 250 words in length how the fellowship will
advance the student’s career goals as they relate to social justice
Ø The names of one or more faculty advisors at Case who might be suitable to serve
as an active advisor to the project/research. (They can be contacted at a later date
if the applicant is awarded the fellowship. The advisor must be willing to guide
the student’s research, as well as write a separate mid-year and final report
regarding the student’s progress.)
Ø A resume or CV
Ø An unofficial Case transcript
Individuals awarded a fellowship will be required to:
Ø Complete the proposed research study or project
Ø Provide a written report to the Social Justice Institute at the midpoint and at the
conclusion of the fellowship
Ø Ensure that the faculty advisor provides a separate mid-year and final report
focused on the student’s research progress
Ø Deliver a presentation to members of the Social Justice Institute and invitees at
the conclusion of the fellowship
Up to a total of two awards will be made to undergraduate students, each in the amount of
$2,000, to be used for expenses associated with the conduct of the project or research.
Examples of allowable expenses include:

The costs of housing at the site of the research
•

Airfare to the site of the research
Stipends to be paid to research participants/interviewees
Printing costs for study-related materials
Fellowship funds may not be used to fund costs already incurred prior to the date of the
award or for research that has already been completed.
The applicant agrees to acknowledge the Social Justice Institute of Case Western Reserve
University on all relevant presentations and publications. For example: This publication
was made possible through funding provided by the Social Justice Institute of Case
Western Reserve University. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and
do not necessarily represent the official views of the Social Justice Institute or Case
Western Reserve University.

Applications will be reviewed and selected by a subcommittee of the Social Justice
Institute. Awards will be announced by the first week of May 2015.
