Elo and Olga Urbanovsky Fellowship The Urbanovsky endowment was established in 1979 by former Texas Tech Horn Professor Elo Urbanovsky (for a complete bio on Professor “Prof” Urbanovsky please visit http://www.depts.ttu.edu/gradschool/docs/scholarships/donors/UrbanovskyBio.pdf). The fellowship provides financial support to new or current doctoral students pursuing areas of research related to land-use planning, management and design. It supports one student as an Urbanovsky Fellow for three years at $30,000/year plus tuition and fees. During this time, the recipient must remain continuously enrolled as a full-time doctoral student. Eligibility Students typically eligible for this fellowship have a background in one of the following disciplines: Park Administration, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Civil Engineering, Resource Economics, History, American Literature, Law, Geosciences, Architecture, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Range and Wildlife Management and related areas. Other criteria include GRE scores, high academic standing, completion of a master’s degree in an appropriate field, and at least 1.5 years of full-time work experience in private practice or in a position aligned with an appropriate municipal, county, state or federal agency. A Doctor of Jurisprudence may substitute for the master’s degree. Have an outstanding record of scholarship as evidenced by academic standing, research and/or creative writing and published material dealing with matters related to the field of study. Applicants may not hold two previous degrees from Texas Tech University. Submission of five letters of recommendation, three of which must come from professionals with whom the applicant has participated in professional work or professional activities. Recipient must devote 100% of their effort toward pursuit of the doctoral degree. As such, the recipient may not work in addition to their fellowship. The Application Process Students must fill out the online application: https://app.smarterselect.com/programs/21986Texas-Tech-Graduate-School The award will begin in Fall 2015. All materials should be received by March 15, 2015. Award announcements will be made by April 15, 2015. Fellowship Disbursement Recipients of this award will have their tuition and fees paid at the beginning of each semester and the $30,000 fellowship award will be allocated out over a 12-month period, with $2,500 being posted to the student’s University tuition and fee account each month. This fellowship does qualify students for in-state tuition. *International students who receive this fellowship will be taxed each month since the amount of the award exceeds the total cost of tuition and fees. For the typical international student, this tax would be 14% of the $2,500 each month (or around $350 a month would be withheld) if they hold an F, J, M, or Q visa. This is a federal IRS policy and more information can be found at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/opmanual/OP62.17.pdf - section 2C. Therefore, these students would receive approximately $2,100 each month after the payment of tuition and fees. *Domestic students will not be taxed on this fellowship.
