PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES Thursday, April 23/3:30 to 8:30 PM/Classroom We invite you to join us to meet with your student’s teachers during our spring conferences. Teachers will inform you of your student’s progress and answer your questions during a 5-minute meeting. The conference time does not allow for a lengthy discussion of problems. We suggest you arrange to meet with your student’s teachers at another time to meet to resolve larger issues. TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR CONFERENCES: • Discuss with your student how she/he perceives they are progressing in class. • Review classroom objectives and goals. • Review completed assignments. • Ask your student if he/she has any concerns about the class work or teacher expectations. • Be prepared to share information with the teacher that will assist him/her in working with your student. TEAM OSSEO We Want You!! To attend your student’s conferences Midtri reports will be distributed in Advisory on Tuesday, April 21. Please go over it with your student. The reports are generated on-line which allows us to produce one report per student that includes information from each teacher that is up to date. This system allows teachers to provide the most current midterm information available. It also allows you to see and discuss your student’s report prior to coming to conferences. Information tables will be set up in the lobby of the Main Entrance to the building. Volunteers will be available to print student mid tri reports, attendance and fines/fees information. You will need to show a picture ID to receive the information and it can only be given to parents/guardians listed on the computer screen. There will also be a list of teachers’ classroom conference locations as well as building maps available. We at Osseo want to emphasize that our midterm conferences are intended for both parents and students. Please have your son or daughter come with you so the educational link between home and school can be complete. PARENTS OF SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT PLANNING FOR LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL WITH YOUR STUDENT? If you need help or have questions about your student’s options after high school, please attend a ’planning for life after high school’ information session on Thursday, April 23 (during Spring Conferences) at 5:00 PM in the CRC. Topics covered will include planning for the future, what colleges are looking for, what the CRC can help you with, visiting colleges and financial aid. We hope to see you there! IMPORTANT TESTING INFORMATION All students in Minnesota public schools are required to participate in the statewide assessment program. The assessments your student takes during the school year 2014-2015 measure academic achievement and progress towards meeting the state graduation assessment requirements. Students must meet graduation assessment requirements in Reading, Mathematics and Writing in order to be eligible to receive a diploma from a Minnesota public high school. The chart below identifies the assessments your student will take in the school year 2014-2015. STATEWIDE ASSESSMENTS ADMINISTERED IN 2014-2015 Grade 10 (Class of 2017) Grade 11 (Class of 2016) Grade 12 (Class of 2015) Take Grade 10 ACT Plan Take the Mathematics MCA for accountability (if not already taken) Take Science MCA for accountability (if not already taken) Take Science MCA for accountability (if not already taken) Meet graduation assessment requirements in reading, mathematics and writing: Proficiency on MCA or pass GRAD retests OR Take Reading MCA for Accountability and Take Science MCA for accountability (if not already taken) Take or have taken ACT/Work Keys/Compass/ASVAB OR Take Grade 11 ACT Plus Writing Take or have taken ACT/Work Keys/Compass/ASVAB We administered MCA Reading to all sophomores and MCA Math to all juniors between March 11 and March 23. The students were tested using the online assessment program. On April 28, all juniors across the state of Minnesota will take the ACT Plus Writing exam. It is a required graduation assessment to provide information to grade 11 students, their parents and educators regarding the level of preparedness for postsecondary success on a nationally recognized college entrance exam. This exam will be administered at OSH beginning at 7:30 AM and it is FREE OF CHARGE!! Also on April 28, all sophomores are to report to school as usual. They will be taking part in an array of activities related to their classes, college and career readiness and activities related to the upcoming MCA Science test that is scheduled to start on May 4. The seniors are excused from school on the day of the ACT, April 28, because of the expectations and demands of coordinating the ACT Plus Writing. The Minnesota Department of Education has shared the suggestions on the next page for parents to help students get ready for statewide assessments. IMPORTANT TESTING INFORMATION cont. General Preparation • Students should take courses that address Minnesota’s academic standards. Most schools also make appropriate educational opportunities available to students who are at risk for not succeeding on these tests. • Familiarize students with the test directions and format. For most Minnesota Assessments, you can download Item Samplers from the website at http://www.MNstateassessments.org/item-samplers. • Encourage students to answer ALL test questions. • Encourage students to participate in practice sessions at school and home. • Have students get a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before taking a test. • Provide students with a study area. • Encourage students to practice good study habits. Students should set aside time every day for homework. Reading Tests • • • • Read to students and encourage them to read to you. Have students try crossword puzzles and news quizzes in your local newspaper. Encourage students to read the daily newspaper and general interest magazines. Discuss the events and stories you read about in the newspaper and/or general interest magazines. Math Tests • Encourage students to use Mathematics every day. They can practice by creating a grocery budget, explaining charts and graphs from newspaper and magazine articles, dividing food portions, using rulers to measure objects, measuring a recipe or adding prices on a shopping trip. • Play games that involve numbers or computation. • Encourage students to connect what they are learning in Math class to their hobbies, other classes and everyday life. Science Tests • Share your enthusiasm and interest in Science with your children. • Use Science articles from news publications to show that Science is an ongoing, active process. • Have students use inquiry skills by participating in Science competitions, fairs and other activities. • Explore Science outside the classroom – nature centers, zoos and Science museums. MCAIII Science This test will be administered to all students assigned to a Biology course that fulfills their Biology requirement for graduation. The test will be administered online at school the week of May 5. Writing Tests • Have students practice writing essays that: Describe, narrate or explain observations of human events or situations, Analyze patterns and relationships of ideas, topics or themes, Construct support for a position, argument or idea and Evaluate an idea, topic or theme based on specific criteria • Encourage students to write letters and keep a journal. Using a Calculator Talk to your child’s classroom teacher to find out how calculators are typically used in the classroom. Students can use a calculator on the ACT Math assessments. You can get more information on using a calculator for testing from the school. JUNIOR/SENIOR PROM 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, In a little over a month we will have our annual rite of spring, Prom! Many of you will have sons and/or daughters attending prom, either Osseo’s, that of another school, or possibly both. We hope these experiences are memorable and enjoyable. This year we are very excited to again be holding prom at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center. Directions are on the next page. The theme chosen for this year is “Unmask the Night” and our colors are red, black and gold. The date is Saturday, May 16. Due to site requirements, the dance is from 7:00 to 11:00 PM. We would like to remind students and parents that students are expected to be in school the Friday before prom and the Monday after. All juniors and seniors registered at OSH or in an Osseo diploma program, as well as a date from any school (with a completed and signed guest form) may attend at a cost of $40.00 per person. The price includes refreshments at the dance and a special memento gift they will receive with their ticket. The memento gift this year is a mask the students will be able to decorate/personalize so get your ticket early! If you plan to bring a date, the date needs to be at least a sophomore in high school and under the age of 21. If your guest does not attend Osseo Senior High you will need to have a guest form filled out and signed and bring it with you in order to purchase both tickets. Ticket Sale Information Tickets will be sold May 5, May 7, May 12 and May 14 during all three lunches. In order to buy tickets all fines and fees must be cleared prior to this time. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE AND TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD AT ANY OTHER TIME. All tickets are nontransferable and nonrefundable. Due to the large number of students we have attending prom we do not have a grand march - however, we invite parents to take pictures of couples as they arrive at Earle Brown between 7:00 and 8:00 PM. We ask your cooperation in leaving the site by 8:00 PM. As is the case with any of our school-sponsored activities, this event will be well chaperoned. Administrators and faculty members, along with some of their spouses, will be in attendance. The chaperones will be there to help ensure a safe, enjoyable prom for all participating. Our contract with Earle Brown also requires that we have two police officers in attendance. Their presence is to help ensure a safe exit and entry from the site, as well as providing hopefully unnecessary emergency care or assistance with unruly prom guests. All school policies will be enforced. Use, or apparent prior use, of mood altering chemicals, as well as tobacco use, will not be allowed by anyone in attendance, student or non-student. Although this event is not a lock-in, the one entrance dance policy will be in effect. Once a student has left the building, they will not be allowed to reenter. Students are expected to behave appropriately and respond to all adults in attendance if questioned. There are some concerns involved with sponsoring an event of this nature. One of the most enjoyable things about prom, and a reason chaperones are easy to find, is seeing these young people all dressed up. Formal attire seems to have the effect of formalizing manners and behaviors of the wearer. It’s as if the clothes and the event elevate the feeling of maturity. One concern lies in recognizing that this feeling of maturity brings with it the responsibility for making other mature decisions during prom night. Many students’ evening does not end with the drive home after the dance. The letter on the opposite page addresses some of the concerns that arise on this type of occasion. We hope parents will discuss all plans for the evening with their sons and daughters, and that the discussion includes making good decisions regarding some tough choices they may be faced with about hotels, chemical use, sexual intimacy, etc. Forethought and prior discussion can help to provide the opportunity for a much more enjoyable and memorable Prom experience for everyone involved. We have a great group of students at Osseo and we want Prom to be a very special event in their lives. It is our hope, along with that of the Junior Class Committee and the entire school staff, that this will be an event that can be looked back on with wonderful memories. If you have any questions please call us at 391-8500. Michelle Corrigan & Marcy Nelson, Junior Class Advisors JUNIOR/SENIOR PROM 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, As we approach the end of another school year, calendars fill with many activities and events. One of the most anticipated is Junior/Senior Prom. This year’s Prom will be held on Saturday, May 16 from 7:00 to 11:00 PM at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center. We are anticipating a large group of students will attend. Your son or daughter may be one of the many students attending this event. We at Osseo Senior High would like to encourage you to be a part of your son’s or daughter’s plans. Sit down and go through the evening’s plans with them. If they have plans for after Prom, make sure you know where they will be. Hotel room parties have become enough of a problem that many hotels are ready to prosecute students involved in uncontrolled activities in their establishments. We highly recommend that parents do not rent rooms for students. If you choose to do so, we hope that you will check on the liability associated with that choice and instead plan to open your home for a short time for the students to end their evening in a chaperoned atmosphere free of drug and alcohol related activities. Set a reasonable curfew and expect your son or daughter to follow it. Please, again, discuss with your son or daughter the responsible behavior you expect them to exhibit during this special evening. We feel that with support from you, students will make good decisions and have a memorable and safe evening. In order to make the night more enjoyable for all, we have instituted some guidelines related to dance conduct and dress code. Below you will find the Dance Guidelines and Dress Code we will be using. DANCE POLICIES 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Everyone must present a photo ID at the door. The doors lock at 9:00 PM, you must be checked in prior to that time. If you leave the dance, there is no re-admittance. All dresses must meet the OSH Dance Dress Code. Every student will receive a wristband upon entry in to the dance. Sexually suggestive dancing will not be allowed (no straddling legs, no bending over, no touching of breasts, buttocks or genitals, both feet must remain on the floor, etc.). 7. Sexually suggestive dancing may result in removal of your wrist band by chaperones. This will serve as your warning. If you are approached again you will be asked to leave the dance (you will not be reimbursed for your ticket). 8. No “making out” (overt and/or prolonged public displays of affection). DRESS CODE Dress lengths may be no higher than 4 inches above the knee. Dress slits may be no higher than 4 inches above the knee. Anyone not meeting this dress code will NOT be allowed into Prom. If you are turned away from the dance due to a dress code violation, you will NOT be reimbursed for your ticket. Spring 2015 Dear Parents and Class of 2016: Planning has begun for the 2016 yearbook and David Bank Studios has again been designated as Osseo’s official photographer. As a result, David Bank Studios will provide us with yearbook photography and other services at no cost to the school which enables us to help keep yearbook costs down. Since we are planning to have senior yearbook pages in color, we can accept photos ONLY from David Bank Studios. In order to have their pictures in the yearbook, all seniors must have their portrait taken at David Bank Studios. While you may choose a different photographer for your senior photo purchases we recommend David Bank's. We have been pleased with the quality and multiple options offered by David Bank's. However, if you elect to use another photographer, you must still have a portrait session at David Bank's in order to have your senior photo included in the yearbook. David Bank Studios offers a no-charge session for your yearbook portrait from June 1, 2015 through July 10, 2015. This session is 2 to 3 poses. A no-charge yearbook pose is also included with any paid session at David Bank Studios. Session fees begin at $30 for a Traditional session including 6 to 8 poses in one outfit. Information from the studio on additional session choices will be enclosed with this letter. The free session is available at the studio until July 10, 2015. The last day to have your portrait taken to be included in the yearbook is September 18, 2015. You must have your pictures taken at David Bank Studios by September 18, 2015 for it to appear in the yearbook. Any pictures taken after this date will not be included in the yearbook. ALL Seniors are encouraged to take care of this early – avoid the September rush, get it done right away! Please call the studio at 763-421-4553 (Anoka) or 763-571-2265 (Fridley) to schedule an appointment. Do not call the school. PLEASE NOTE - ONLY “SCHOOL APPROPRIATE” OUTFITS WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE YEARBOOK. We would also like to thank the Student Peer Tutors for all of their efforts in the first two trimesters – we have many conscientious and talented students who have volunteered to be Peer Tutors, helping other students in numerous subjects.
