If you are in the school, please take a moment to walk around and observe the students’ work samples on the various classroom bulletin boards. I would also like to thank our students for their continued work on improving their learning and building positive connections throughout the year. The grade 7 students have also had a visit from the Dover Bay counsellors, and will be visiting Dover Bay in May as part of their preparation for a new venture in their education. This Friday is our Jump Rope for Heart Assembly, followed by our Jump Rope Day on April 17th. To support Jump Rope for Heart, the whole school will be “skipping rope” led by an energetic, colourfully dressed Mr. Lazaroff. This is an excellent fundraiser by PVS for the Heart & Stroke foundation & a great way to stay fit as well! We will be surveying students in Grades 4 and 7 students, their parents, and all staff. The annual Provincial Satisfaction Survey provides information to support discussions about improving student achievement at each school. The survey gathers perceptions from students, parents, and staff on areas including achievement, human and social development, and safety. This year, the surveys for students will be scheduled between April 13th and April 28th. Parents of students in grades 4 and 7 will receive an information sheet with a logon number. This survey must be completed by April 30th. The school will provide access for parents who would like to participate but do not have a computer. Please phone the school at 250 390 4027 to arrange a day and time. Parents who do not wish to use school computers may want to use a local library. This year, from April 13 – 17, Kerri Isham, a well-known health and “Body Smart” educator, will be presenting grade appropriate lessons to our students, K – Grade 7. The primary students will be in their divisions and with Kerri Isham for two 45 minute sessions, the intermediate divisions will be in two 60 minute sessions, the grade 6 students will have three 60 minute sessions, and the grade 7’s will be in three 90 minute sessions. An informative letter has been sent home with specific information about the dates/times that Kerri Isham will be presenting to the class. Thank you to the PVS PAC for their support. Kerri Isham will be hosting an informative session for parents on “Body Smart: From Child to Teen” on Wednesday, April 8 from 6:00-8:00pm at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. This session is for parents with children in K-7. STUDENT CONDUCT- DRESS CODE At Pleasant Valley School, it is expected that students will dress in a manner that is appropriate and conducive to a positive and safe learning environment. Appropriate dress is considered to be that which: Allows for the safe movement of the wearer and does not pose any safety risk to anyone in the school. Is free of any reference to inappropriate language or terminology deemed inappropriate for a school setting, alcohol, drugs, gangs, hate, obscenity, profanity, racism/discrimination, sex and/or violence. Is appropriate to the setting and activity in which the student is involved. Is not disturbing or distracting to others within the school setting. For example, shirts must easily meet the top of pants, shorts or skirt being worn with them; no spaghetti strapped tops (only lasagna straps), low cut tops, either front or back are not appropriate. Shorts, dresses and skirts must easily fall near the top of the knee and must not become too short when being worn. (I.e. Fingertips should touch bottom of the shorts when hands are placed by side.) The wearing of hats is not permitted in the school hallway, school assemblies and at formal school occasions. The wearing of hats at the classroom level is left up to the discretion of the classroom teacher LIGHTS OUT CANADA On April 22nd we will be participating in “Lights Out Canada”. Lights Out Canada (www.lightsoutcanada.org) is an annual event, during which schools turn off their lights and highlight the science of climate change and how youth can effect positive change. The goal is not only to engage students with climate change issues, but also to empower them to take action and equip them with the know-how necessary to do so. Through participating in Lights Out Canada, PVS is lending our efforts to a national movement for change involving over 122,000 students and thousands of teachers and administrators across Canada.
