HILLESLEY TODDLER
GROUP
Hopkins Hall (playing field)
Every Friday, 10-11.30am.
£1 a session.
Hillesley toddler group has
once again had a busy
month with lots of craft
activities,
including
decorating tins and making
flowers for Mother's Day,
planting cress seeds and
making Easter pictures and
Easter nest cakes.
More activities are planned
for April, including some
gardening, a toy swap and
no doubt we will find more
excuses to get the glue
and glitter out.
Coming up on Friday 8th
May from 10.30 there will
be another toddlers’ trip
to Hillesley School. The
children will be able to
join in with some fun
activities and get to know
Class 1 while parents and
grandparents can enjoy a
cuppa.
Contact Mary Elcombe on
07849 833001.
Hillesley Happenings is produced by Carol Dawson, 2 Farmcote (Tel/Fax : 842014; e-mail: [email protected]) and is kindly
delivered to every house locally by Lilian Mountford, Margaret Plummer, Val Skinner, Chris Taylor and Kate Woodrow.
HILLESLEY SCHOOL
Community Meeting to be
held at Hillesley CE VA
Primary
School
on
st
Thursday 21 May 6.30 7.30pm.
This meeting is being held
to give members of the
wider community a chance
to visit and support the
school in their marketing
and fund-raising efforts.
All villagers and interested
persons are welcome to
attend.
The Friends of
Hillesley
School would
like to extend
an enormous THANK YOU
to everyone that supported
our 80s disco. It was a very
successful event and was
great to see so many
people getting dressed up
and boogying on down to
some classic 80s tunes. A
special thanks goes to Phil
Frankland for providing the
essential music for the
evening. The event raised
a fantastic £1200. Funds
raised
have
already
contributed towards some
great activities for our
children,
including
swimming lessons, a global
dance workshop, theatre
workshop, cinema trip and
violin lessons. In the future
we shall also support
Archery lessons, Ukulele
lessons and no doubt more
school trips.
Another area supported by
the FOHS is our Goblin go
kart and Engineering club.
In June the children will
enter their Kart into the
GreenPower event held at
Renishaw. The club is
currently
run
by
a
volunteer on a Friday
afternoon. If you feel that
you may have any skills
and time to contribute to
this exciting project please
contact us (Gary Finn), as
more volunteers would be
greatly appreciated.
As the weather warms up
please lookout for our ever
popular
"ice
cream

With Spring in the air and
the nights staying lighter
our field will start to be
used
so
much
more
therefore, we would like
to welcome as many
villagers along to our next
field clean up on Saturday
18th April (10am-noon) so
that we can get it looking
fabulous, ready for the
warmer days. There are
plenty of jobs to do such
as weeding, sweeping,
clearing out old debris,
mowing the play area etc.
We welcome as many
helpful hands as possible
to help get our beautiful
field looking great. Please
come along to the field at
10am with as many garden
tools as possible. We
welcome all children as
well. Hot and cold drinks
will be available in Hopkins
Hall during this time.
You would all have noticed
that work is now underway
installing our new swing
set in the children's play
area. Our old set of swings
had become very old and
vandalism to the structure
forced us to consider
getting it replaced quickly.
Our new swing set will
include a nest swing,
toddler swing and a
standard swing. It is made
of solid oak so should
stand the test of time. We
hope to look at replacing
other parts of the play
area once we have the
adequate funding to do so
but in the meantime we
hope the village children
enjoy
their
new
adventures on the new
swings.
Another date for your
diaries is Saturday 12th
September when we will
be holding our annual Fun
Day on the field. We will
be welcoming back the
inflatable slide and hoping
to get the competitive
village juices flowing with
a produce show.

HELLO FROM YOUR LOCAL
VILLAGE AGENT, providing
information and supporting
people over the age of 50.
If you are unsure where to
find anything from a
gardener to what you may
be entitled to as a carer,
contact me. If I don’t know
the answer, I know how to
find out! I only work 10
hours per week, so cannot
always deal with things
right away. If you need
support, such as personal
care, right away, I advise
you to call the Adult
Services Helpdesk on 01452
426868.
A few examples of things
that I do:
 assist with completing
Blue Badge Forms and
referring you on to





agencies such as Age UK,
Carers Gloucestershire,
Citizens Advice Bureau,
Alzheimer’s Society depending on what you
are claiming for or
looking into.
let you know about local
activities and introduce
you for the first time
that you attend.
give you information
about other support
such as the “Friends for
You”
befriending
scheme.
advise about things that
may make life easier or
more enjoyable, such as
the Talking Newspaper
scheme.
let you know about
agencies
such
as
Healthwatch,
who
gather
stories
and
experiences of people
who use health or social
care services, or Mears
and the Red Cross, who
do free home safety
checks.
visit day centres, lunch
clubs, coffee mornings
to meet people, answer
their questions, share
information.
If you are living with the
impact of having cancer,
or someone in your family
has cancer, I can introduce
you to one of our Specialist
Cancer Agents. They can
visit all adults in that
situation.
We also have Community
Agents who work with
people
from
these
communities:
African
Caribbean,
Bengali,
Gujarati, Migrant (2 agents
are Polish speakers).
We are kept up to date
with things that impact on
every day life. Later in
April I will be finding out
about the Care Act, which
may have implications for
anyone who is caring for
someone in their family.
I liaise closely with people
such as the Neighbourhood
Warden,
Police
Beat
Officers, PCSOs and the
Fire Service.
I get referrals from GPs,
nurses,
occupational
therapists,
physiotherapists, hospitals,
family members, helpful
neighbours, and you can
contact me yourself.
If you are unsure whether I
can be of assistance with
your query, give me a call
or email me, and if I can’t
help I can usually let you
know who can.

Terry Truebody [01454

Meetings are held at 8pm
on the 4th Monday of the
month in the Methodist
Hall in Back Street.
There is a new vegetable
on the block. It is called
Brukale. It is a cross
between sprouts and kale.
I recommend that you try
it. It is delicious.
This winter, John Weaver
experienced
‘strangegoings-on’ in his vegetable
patch. During the night
something
had
been
pulling his sprout plants
down to the ground and
stripping the stalks of
produce whilst leaving no
trace of tracks or spoor on
the soft ground. After
setting up a camera he
discovered it to be a
blooming
large
rabbit
wearing snow shoes – no, I
jest, the rabbit wasn’t all
that large.
Our speaker for February
was Nathalie Mignotte
who gave a talk on
‘Gardens of Versailles’.
A lover of and frequent
visitor
to
Versailles,
Nathalie
gave
an
impassioned
and
informative presentation
of the garden rooms and
fountains at the palace
and at Marie Antoinettes
nearby Le Petit Trianon.
Our next meeting is on
Monday 27th April when
Adam Alexander will give
a talk on ‘Gardens of the
Mekong’.
If you are not a member
but would like to hear a
speaker that takes your
fancy then come along as a
guest – fee £3.00. For
further
information

We
have
enjoyed
a
fabulous
month
at
preschool;
firstly
with
World Book Day, where all
the children made a
brilliant effort dressing up
as
their
favourite
characters from the books
they brought in.
We have also been making
and selling cakes to
support Charlie Butchers
dad, who is running the
London marathon to raise
£2000 for beating bowel
cancer.
And lastly we joined in for
Red Nose Day, with the
children dressing in red
and all donating a £1. We
spent the morning making
cakes, chocolate flap jacks
and meringues, creating
Red Nose day plates,
playing with Red Goo and
printing in red paint using
Red Shapes!! A Huge thank
you to Marina Pogose at
Tiger lily face painting too
for coming in to paint all
the children’s faces.
Coming up, we are looking
forward to a visit from
Yate Library who will be
delivering ‘treasure packs’
for the children who are
going to school this year
and to read some stories
with us.
We would like to say a big
thank you to the parish
council for donating funds
to purchase a CD player
with multiple headphones
and story and music CD’s,
which will be a great new
facility for the children.
Lastly, we are thrilled to
announce
that
the
preschool
and
toddler
committee are hosting a
fantastic event in the show
marquee on Sunday August
30th in aid of preschool.
Please see the advert in
the magazine for full
