Dear Parents and Guardians
I wonder if, perhaps, we have become so used to the fact that the current captain of the Australian
Netball team (Laura Geitz) is a recent past student of the College that it no longer strikes us as
remarkable? How is it that the students of this relatively small school in regional Queensland
achieve – both at school and in later life - such great things?
I was surprised to learn this week of the extraordinary sporting exploits of another of my past
students. Heather Ballinger was the girl captain of the College in 1999, and she was a gifted
athlete back then. I was delighted to read a report of Heather’s starring role in the famous
victory of the Australian Jillaroos (women’s rugby league team) over the New Zealand Ferns
last weekend. I believe this was Heather’s seventh cap, in a career that has already included a
winning World Cup campaign. This week sees current girl captain of the College, Giorgia Brennan
representing the Darling Downs in the Queensland U19 Netball State Championships. It is a big
week for our elite sporting representatives, with five senior boys also representing the Darling
Downs at the Queensland Schoolboys Rugby State Championships, being held in Townsville. We
wish Matt Whittaker, Tim Allport, Arnie Briel, Stewart Austin, Will Troughton, Jacob Davis, Khan
Ladbrook, Cody Christensen and Kieran Fender a safe and successful carnival.
Speaking of elite competitors, our equestrian team is getting to the ‘pointy end’ of their season
also, and this week sees coach Richard King leading a team of twelve riders to Dalby for the
Darling Downs and South-west Interschool championships. We look forward to hearing of a large
contingent of this team qualifying for the State Championships in Maryborough at the end of
June.
As many parents will know, Beef Australia 2015 is being held this week in Rockhampton.
SCOTS PGC is represented by our Cattle Club (nine students and seven head of cattle). Mr Peter
Collett reports that the most notable successes by the team so far this week include our Angus
heifers placing first and second in their class, and Justin Rohde placing third in the 15-18 years
Commercial Cattle judging competition. Apparently the students also had lots of fun with two
teams competing in the Young Farmers Challenge. Even our Principal worked up quite a sweat
by heaving hay bales as he assisted in the setting up of this challenge!
Not all challenges are quite so strenuous. Mr Neil Goodwin took a team of four senior boys
(Jack McCullough, Jack Montgomery, Dominic Casey-Lee and Dominic Andersen-Strudwick to
Toowoomba during the week, to compete in the Bond University Mooting competition. For the
uninitiated, mooting is a competition in which students discuss hypothetical law cases. Mr
Goodwin tells me that the boys performed creditably and displayed a sound understanding of
the law. We are still waiting to hear of the outcome of this contest.
All in all, it has been just another week – albeit an especially interesting one - in the life of this
extraordinary College that you have chosen for the education of your children. We aspire to be
recognised as the premier rural boarding school in Queensland: I trust you can see why. I also
trust that you will continue to support us in this by telling your friends and family some of the
College stories. “Word of mouth” is still our most effective form of publicity and you, collectively,
will always be our most influential marketers.

Naplan Testing
Next week students across Australia sit for the NAPLAN
testing. Our teachers have been preparing the students
in such a way that they are well prepared but not stressed
about the testing regime. Please see important information
in this newsletter regarding this testing.
Just a gentle reminder that, as parents of Year 3,5,7,9
students, we would like you to support your students by
ensuring they are well rested on the days of the testing –
early to bed and a relaxed start to the day. A good breakfast
on those mornings is also essential and being on time helps
keep your child settled as the testing starts first up each day.
Please ensure your child has all the necessary equipment –
glasses if they wear them, pencils, pens and (for Yr 7 and 9
students) a working calculator.
Message from Chaplain, Mrs Jenny Potter
We have a guest speaker in chapel this week, Rev Sunil
Kadaparambil, who is a patrol padre with Frontier Services
based in Cunnamulla.
Frontier Services assist people in remote parts of Australia,
offering practical care and spiritual support. Created
in 1912, it was called the Australian Inland Mission. Its
instigator, Rev John Flynn, went on to start the Royal
Flying Doctor Service. It was renamed when members of
the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches
united in 1977.
Catch up vaccine clinic
Thursday 14 May at 8.00am. A list of names will be sent
to the Middle school and Senior school secretaries. Those
students who were sick on the original day are able to
come and have them.

Rugby Reports
We are all keen (and a little nervous) about Round
3 where we aren't told the topic until we get to
Toowoomba and then have just one hour to prepare
our case. Good luck to all teams.
The weekend just gone saw some of the wildest weather
to hit the Darling Downs region in a long time. This led to
YMCA SCOTS PGC College OSHC
the cancellation of most sporting activity (including most
of the rugby fixtures); however, the U/16s/17s squad did Did you know that you could attend the YMCA as

Best performers for the squad were the unaccustomed
centre pairing of Khan Ladbrook and James Gilmore,
while Jordan Charge, Will Malone and Kristian-Stanfield
Roche stood up well against a pair of experienced
representative props. This weekend sees the start of the
1st XV programme with a fixture against Sheldon College
in Brisbane. Congratulations go to Sam McCullough and
Ben Johnston as the Captain and Vice-Captain for this
fixture.
The children worked hard creating and putting love
