Amplify ELA: California Edition and
Amplify ELD: California Edition | May 2015
Welcome to Amplify!
The Amplify ELA: California Edition and the Amplify ELD: California Edition combine
to create a comprehensive English literature and language curriculum that meets the
California ELA and ELD standards for grades 6, 7 and 8. Designed for classrooms in
which the teacher and every student uses a device, the Amplify ELA and Amplify ELD
program includes standards-based content; rich media tools such as apps, videos and
dramatic readings; team and project-based activities in Quests; and a digital Library.
The Amplify ELA course includes integrated support for English learners and is part
of both our Program 1 and Program 2 submissions. The Amplify ELD course includes
standards-based content for designated ELD instruction and is part of our Program 2
submission, In both programs, teachers instruct and students receive instruction via
tablets, laptops, and desktop computers, using a digital, web-based curriculum.
We have put together a Quick Start Guide to show you how to navigate around
our curriculum and understand the different components that make up our
comprehensive ELA and ELD program for California. You will be viewing the
student -facing materials only.
The ELA and ELD courses live on the same platform but in different places (we’ll show
you where to find them). Each course is organized by grade level, and each grade level
contains multiple units. Each unit contains sub-units, lessons, activities and cards.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to navigate through the ELA program using an
example pathway highlighted on the right. Navigation through the ELD program is
identical.
When you’ve finished, we encourage you to explore other grades and units in the
curriculum, as well as visit the Library and the Quests.

Quick Start Guide
You’ll see all the units associated with the 7th grade ELA
curriculum (Tom & Sherlock, Character & Conflict, etc.).
6. Scroll down and click UNIT 7C Brain Science.
The Brain Science unit uses several non-fiction
texts related to the human brain, so students learn
about this fascinatingly complex organ while they
develop their reading and writing skills.
7.
Within the Brain Science unit, you’ll see a vocabulary sub-unit (on the left) and a
content sub-unit (on the right) associated with each topic.
The vocabulary sub-units
provide activities for
building vocabulary in
preparation for the lessons
in the content sub-unit.
Vocabulary activities are
assigned at the beginning
of each lesson.
8. Click the Phineas Gage content sub-unit.
Phineas Gage is an astonishing true story by
science writer John Fleishman about a man who
survives for 10 years after having a 13-pound iron
rod shot through his brain. The lessons in this
sub-unit revolve around excerpts from Fleishman’s
book.
9. Within the sub-unit, you’ll see the associated lessons. Scroll down and click lesson
6 “Phineas should have been dead.”
In this lesson, students discuss an excerpt from
the book where Dr. Harlow treats Phineas following
his accident. Students learn the physiology of
the brain and the nature of infections while
analyzing the text.

Quick Start Guide
10. Within the “Phineas should have been dead” lesson, you’ll see the Lesson
Navigation Bar across the middle of the screen.
This bar lets you see the activities associated with the current lesson. If there are
more activities than can fit on the bar, the arrow lets you view more. The icons
represent the following:
Clipboard – links to Lesson Overview
Solo activity
Pair activity
Writing activity
Discussion topic or poll
11. Click the third icon
to open Activity 3, which is an opportunity for students
to work in pairs.
The first Card in this multi-card Activity (“1 of 3”) has students discuss the
question “Does bacteria cause infection?” They’ve read about the nature of
infection in the book – now they’re asked to put their new knowledge into practice.
12. Click Next to view the second Card. Here students review a passage from Phineas
Gage to find evidence to support their answer.
Congratulations! You’ve now navigated through the Amplify ELA: California Edition
