Summer Traditions and
Returning Favorites
There is snow on the ground as I write this, but thoughts and
plans for spring and summer are on our minds. In mid-May,
most 2nd Graders in the Thompson School District will
be visiting Lone Tree School, the Museum, and the Rialto
Theater Center to learn about Loveland history. For five days,
busloads of children and teachers will be arriving for a variety
of historical activities. The staff and many volunteers will enjoy
an invigorating week of exuberant students who, we hope, will
experience joyful learning.
In June, once again, the Foote Lagoon Concert Series begins
at the Civic Center. After more than 25 years of concerts, I
think it’s safe to call it a summer tradition. We hope you will
enjoy this summer’s line-up, which can be found later in this
AHA!. Also, please join us for another summer tradition—the
Cherry Pie Celebration, on Saturday, July 18.
Missoula Children’s Theatre comes back to the Rialto Theater
Center, after a hiatus, for two productions this summer. If
you have a young thespian in the house, this is the perfect
opportunity to audition for a busy, fun-filled 6 days of theater.
Tuesday Theater for Kids returns, too, with two new and
exciting programs, including a production from Phamaly, one
of Colorado’s top-rated theater companies.
We hope there’s something for everyone in the many summer
activities you’ll find here. Please enjoy. We look forward to
seeing you.

Anna Skibska uses clear glass in a darkened room to create a
dramatic environment, uncovering fresh meaning through the
variable of light and the angle of viewing. With her room-size
installations, Skibska’s sculptures exude lightness within mass—
they are both line and form, strong and delicate, enormous and
elusive. In celebration of the duality of life, fragility is combined with
fearsome scale that guides visitors through her glass environment.
Dreamlike tales of forests and space connect to the human spirit
through dimension and physical presence, creating a magical
experience unveiled through the mystery of light within glass.
Anna Skibska studied at the Academy of Art in Wroclaw, Poland.
Skibska says, “I wrap space, embrace time and space, and trap
light…Glass is merely a vehicle to carry light and shadows in a
darkened space.” Skibska has received numerous awards and
grants over the years, including the prestigious Pollock-Krasner
Foundation Grant in 2002.

JAMES DISNEY: JOURNEYS IN ROCKY
July 25 – September 13
Green Room
An exhibition celebrating James Disney’s long history
with Rocky Mountain National Park and his unique artistic
perspective as an avid climber and national park proponent.
For over 50 years, Disney’s paintings and photographs have
explored various schools of artistic expression. His major
body of work has focused on the mountains and landscapes
of the Western United States, primarily the Colorado Rockies,
Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Indian Peaks
Wilderness.
A native Coloradoan and avid mountaineer, Disney’s love of
the mountains and wilderness began in early childhood and
continues today. He is approaching 1000 ascents to named
and significant unnamed summits in the Western United
States, Canada, and Mexico. His many climbs include nearly
100 ascents of Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park
and an ascent of Denali (Mount McKinley) in Alaska, North
America’s highest mountain.
Fall River by James Disney
Disney twice served as the Artist-in-Residence in Rocky Mountain National Park. He also helped establish and
served the first two years as the Open Lands Visual Artist for Larimer County, Colorado.

PEOPLE IN THE PARK
July 25 – August 30
Foote Gallery
This exhibition uses painting, photography, video, poetry, and
performance to explore ways in which artists perceive visitor
use of Rocky Mountain National Park. Through the lens of
artistic interpretation, experience the extent of human impact
upon natural resources; the positive value of a wilderness
experience; and the ways in which the Artist-In-Residence
program provides artists with a unique inner perspective on
potential use and long term intent of park access. Artists
in this exhibit have participated in the prestigious Artist-InResidence program at Rocky Mountain National Park, with
artwork on loan from the Rocky Mountain National Park
collection.

LOVELAND’S COLD CASE:
FRANK PEAK’S MURDER UNSOLVED
Opening May 2
Fireside Gallery Case
Night Marshal Frank Peak was the only Loveland
police officer killed while on duty. He was slain at
2:30 am on Tuesday, July 13, 1915. The Loveland
Daily Herald reported that Peak’s murder was one
of the most repulsive crimes ever enacted in the
history of the City of Loveland. Two suspects were
questioned; however, no one was ever charged
with his murder, and it remains
unsolved to this day.

HISTORY DAY FIELD TRIPS
The Loveland Museum/Gallery is excited to partner again with
Thompson Education Foundation and the Lola Johnson Field
Trip Fund to bring History Day to second grade students in the
Thompson School District. In its second year, these field trips
will include hands-on lessons and tours of historic sites that
will enhance local history curriculum for our second graders.
Lola Johnson’s family established the Fund with Thompson
Education Foundation to celebrate Lola’s commitment to
education in our district. Lola supported the restoration of Lone
Tree Schoolhouse and helped write the first Loveland history
curriculum for elementary school students. This second grade
field trip is intended to be an annual spring opportunity, provided
at no cost to the second grade classrooms or the schools. Our
goal is to serve each and every second grade classroom in 20
elementary schools in TSD, meaning this program will reach
over 1,100 students. The field trips will be held the week of
May 11, and students will participate in lessons focused on
Native Arapahos, Mountainmen, Pioneers, and Homesteaders
with focus on local personalities. Students also get tours of the
Museum, Rialto, and Lone Tree School.
MUSEUM PURCHASE
A SWEET ABSTRACTION: IN THREE PARTS
BY KENDRA FLEISCHMAN
MIXED MEDIA VIDEO WITH SOUND, 2014
A portion of the History as Art: Part Two – Sugar Beets and Local Labor exhibit has been acquired for installation
in the Great Western Sugar Company exhibit. A Sweet Abstraction: In Three Parts is a unique artistic depiction of
our local history, inspired by objects in the Museum’s own collection.
Artist Kendra Fleischman refers to this 7 ½ minute installation
as a video and sound collage exploring the history of sugar beet
farming. She used a beet knife and bricks from the Loveland
Sugar Beet processing plant as inspiration for her work. The
video loop features film from a 1924 advertisement created to
encourage Mexican laborers to come to the United States to
work in the sugar beet fields as well as several other vintage
films that discuss the history of sugar production in the United
States. Fleischman shot some of the remaining footage at the
Loveland Museum/Gallery and at what remains of the Loveland
Sugar Plant. She also includes a whimsical portrayal of herself
as a sugar beet! All the audio clips featured in the video are
from vintage commercials such as Sugar Crisp and C&H Pure
Cane Sugar.
The Museum is excited to have this well-received artwork as part of our growing art collection. The staff looks
forward to the installation and hopes visitors will enjoy it as much as they have.

PHYLLIS WALBYE FILM SERIES
Two nights of red-carpet cinema excellence at the Rialto!
Each spring, theater audiences all over the world enthusiastically welcome the appearance of the Oscarnominated short films in local theaters. This year, the Rialto is pleased to present two screenings of
Oscar-nominated shorts in a true cinema setting.
The Animation Series includes films from heavyweights like the Walt Disney Animation Studios
alongside the efforts of small independent animation houses. The Dam Keeper was produced by Fort
Collins native and CSU alumnus Duncan Ramsey during his recent tenure at Pixar.
The Live Action Series offers perspectives from Ireland, Israel, Sweden and Tibet. These offerings are
more mainstream than their animated cousins, and feature a few familiar faces. Though they span the
gamut of human emotion, they all share the universal nature of human experience.
Brief pre-film discussions will begin at 7 pm

THE GENERAL (1926)
Saturday, June 20, 7 pm
Tickets: $12
An action-adventure
comedy starring Buster
Keaton and Clyde Bruckman.
Buster Keaton plays Johnny Gray,
a Southern railroad engineer
who loves his train engine, The
General, almost as much as he
loves his girlfriend Annabelle Lee.
When the opening shots of the
Civil War are fired at Fort Sumter,
Johnny tries to enlist but deemed
too useful as an engineer to be
a soldier. Annabelle, thinking
him a coward, turns her back on
him. When Northern spies steal
the General (and, unwittingly,
Annabelle), the story switches from
drama and romance to adventure
mixed with Keaton’s trademark
deadpan humor as he uses every
means possible to catch up to the
General, thwart the Yankees, and
rescue his darling Annabelle.
