hammer gender gaps!”
Public Policy
Asha Bajaj,
Public Policy Co-Chair
In July, California's minimum wage
increased from $8 to $9. In January
2016, it's set to rise to $10 an hour.
But if AB 669 passes, tipped workers who bring home more than $15
an hour including tips will remain at the current $9 per hour minimum
wage. The bill is intended to spread labor dollars in businesses like
restaurants, rather than give a raise solely to servers, who often make
more than the minimum wage in tips.
Current bills in the CA Senate and Assembly Health Committees:
.E-cigarettes, SB 140, extends tobacco laws and regulations to electronic cigarettes.
Tobacco age limit, SB 151, raises the legal age for buying tobacco
products to age 21.
Insurance limits, AB 248, prevents health insurers in the large-group
market from offering plans with a minimum value of less than 60%,
with an exemption for limited wrap-around coverage.
Vaccinations, SB 277, eliminates the personal belief exemption from
immunization requirements for school-age children. It also requires
schools to include local vaccination rates in mailings to parents.
Dental Home, AB 648, appropriates $4 million for a virtual dental
home program in areas of greatest need in the state.

So, does this hold any significance? It might! The clip doesn’t say
who’s purchasing the comics. However, if it’s young boys, then perhaps they are being introduced to strong women. If it’s young girls,
then it could be providing them with a strong role model. So, is it
2015 Garden Tour Help Still
Needed!
To all the members who have signed on
to help out with our 15th Annual Garden
Tour, whether you’re baking cookies,
being a docent, serving refreshments or
driving a shuttle, a heartfelt Thank You. We can’t do it without you!
Now, at the risk of sounding like a Broken Record (n – “someone or
something that annoyingly repeats itself”) or becoming annoyingly
tedious, I once again appeal to those members who have not
signed on to help. We still need at least 25 more docents.
I appreciate that not everyone is able to help out because of health
issues, travel plans, etc. However, if there is any way you can help,
there are two ways to volunteer: complete an on-line form at http://
daw-ca.aauw.net/garden-volunteers/ or send an email to Kathy
McKnight or Mary Ellen Blake. If you have limitations such as needing to sit or be in the shade, let
us know and we’ll be happy to accommodate you.
If enough members sign on to help, I won’t be
forced to become even more annoyingly tedious.
Thanks. §

International Exhibition
Thursday, June 4,
Museum of the San Ramon
Valley
To celebrate the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exhibition’s centennial,
we will see "California Invites the World" at our local Museum of the San
Ramon Valley. Our own branch member, Carmen Curtis, will be our guide
at 10:30 am and cost is $5/person. We will lunch in Danville after our tour.
In 1915, nearly 20 million people visited this Exposition trumpeting the restoration of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and the opening of the
Panama Canal. The sole remaining building from the fair is our beloved
Palace of Fine Arts, incomparably designed by Bernard Maybeck. All other
buildings were demolished. This exhibition is a pooling of resources by all
the major museums in San Francisco and the Oakland Museum of California.
