MISSION
San Diego Christian College exists to educate and inspire students through the truth of
Scripture and development of competencies that prepare graduates whose purpose is to impact
the world.
CAPS AND GOWNS
The wearing of robes is an academic tradition that dates back centuries. In those days all
universities were operated by the church and the professors were teaching monks. Heating in
the universities was minimal, so the students copied the long robes that their professors wore
in order to keep warm. The long, black gowns helped to conserve body heat and protected the
students from cold drafts. In time, hoods were attached to the robe to keep the students’ heads
warm. Then on warmer days, the hoods were pushed back.
Styles in gowns and hoods varied from university to university, but the idea was brought
to the United States by the colonists. In 1890, representatives from several colleges and
universities met and standardized the type of gown that is worn by the holders of three degrees:
baccalaureate, master’s, and doctor’s. The doctoral degree is represented by a gown with bellshaped sleeves and velvet bands above the elbow and down the front. The master’s degree is
represented by a gown that is open and has long sleeves. The sleeves have an opening at the
elbow through which the wearer puts his arms. This gives the appearance of short sleeves. The
bachelor’s degree is represented by a gown that is worn closed in front, and has long pointed
sleeves with no decoration. The edging strip on the hood represents the field in which the
degree was earned while the satin colors represent the school from which the degree was earned.

On behalf of the entire San Diego Christian College community, it is my honor to congratulate
the forty-third graduating class. I am proud of your accomplishment and know that those
at San Diego Christian are also excited to see your hard work and commitment result in
the completion of your degree. We applaud your academic pursuits and accomplishments.
Your desire and commitment to increase “in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and
people” is a testament to our Heavenly Father and the history of our College.
God’s faithfulness is amazing and this is an exciting day to reflect on all He has accomplished
through the life of each graduate. As each of you begins the next stage of your life, it is our
hope that you will “continue steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the
Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain.” I am privileged to represent San Diego

ASSEMBLYMAN BRIAN JONES
Commencement Speaker
Since his election to the Assembly in 2010, Assemblyman Brian Jones quickly earned
a reputation as a strong fiscal conservative and a vocal advocate for a smaller, more
responsible government.
He has been a fierce opponent of the rural fire “fee” (tax) because of its disproportionate
impact on East San Diego County and Southern Riverside County residents and rural
citizens of California. He has challenged special favors for public sector labor unions, and
his robust defense of the Constitution and the Second Amendment has garnered statewide attention.
During his first term in the State Assembly, Brian found himself shaking his head at
the nonsense that surrounds the Legislature and would then ask, ‘Are You Kidding Me?’
This catchphrase turned into a weekly video segment, which has since garnered statewide
media attention and speaking engagements.
His articulate commentary and leadership abilities earned him the appointment as Chairman of the Assembly Republican
Caucus in 2012. Brian currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Assembly Business and Professions Committee and is
a member of the Assembly Appropriations, Rules, Budget, Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health and Human Services,
Budget Subcommittee 6 on Budget Process, Oversight and Program Evaluation, Joint Legislative Audit, and the Joint
Legislative Ethics Committees.
Brian’s deep convictions in free market principals, the need for government reform and tax relief comes from his service
in both the public and private sector. His background as a businessman and his service as Councilmember and Vice
Mayor of Santee strengthened his resolve to restore decision making to the local level and to insure that tax monies
meet community needs.
Brian has been a Santee resident since 1978; he attended Santee Elementary, Cajon Park Jr. High, and Santana High
School. After graduating, Brian attended San Diego State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Business Administration. He and his wife Heather both grew up in Santee, chose to begin their family there and have
lived in the same community ever since. In his spare time, Brian enjoys mountain biking, off-roading, swimming and
spending time with Heather and his three children.
Brian has made it a priority to reclaim California’s status as the Golden State of opportunity, innovation, and jobs.
