2014 – 2015 Grade 8 Student Pledge
Deer Park Middle Magnet School
Principal: Delores Tedeschi-Butler • 8th Grade Assistant Principal: Aubrey Brown • 8th Grade Team Leaders: Trevor Collins & LaSean Gooden
In order to have the most positive and successful school year possible, it is important that all members
of the school community understand the expectations for students. There are many exciting incentives
planned for students who meet and exceed expectations. Of course, there are consequences for those
who do not. However, it is the sincere hope of the Deer Park faculty that students will try their very best
this school year in both academics and behavior so they can reach their full potential. It is with these
concepts in mind that the following opportunities, rules, and procedures are detailed.
Incentives
In addition to the many events planned by the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) team,
the 8th Grade team has the following incentives planned. This list is subject to change and expansion.

Eligibility for Incentives
All students are expected to exhibit safe, responsible, and respectful behaviors. In addition, all students
are expected to try their best to achieve good grades by coming prepared to class and completing all
assignments. Therefore, any of the following violations would disqualify a student from participating in
any 8th Grade or PBIS incentives for the rest of the quarter.

Discipline Procedures
We encourage all students to act appropriately in the classroom so they do not disturb the learning
environment. However, we understand there are times when some students will make mistakes or poor
choices. Most problematic, repeated behaviors (late to class, gum chewing, excessive talking, etc.) will
follow the discipline protocol below.





1st Consequence – Teacher Detention
2nd Consequence – Teacher Detention
3rd Consequence – Referral to Team Leader / Administrative Detention
4th Consequence – Required Parent Conference
5th Consequence – Suspension
There are some behaviors deemed serious enough to move the student past the first two consequences
and directly to a Team Leader referral and an Administrative Detention. These behaviors include, but are
not limited to, truancy from class (more than 10 minutes), leaving class without permission, swearing at
or intimidating a teacher, property misuse, throwing objects, and skipping two teacher detentions.
Of course, any major incidents such as fighting, weapons, serious property damage, etc. will be handled
according to the Student Handbook, likely resulting in school or board suspension.
Absent Work
It is the student’s responsibility to complete assignments or exams they missed while absent. Upon
return to school, students have the same amount of days as the number they were absent to complete
absent work. For example, if a student was absent for two days, when they return they will have two
days to complete anything they missed. However, it is imperative students turn in assignments within
that time frame. After the allotted absent make-up days have passed, any assignments not completed
will be regarded as missing and subject to school/teacher late-work policies, resulting in a maximum
grade of 50%.
*** Whenever possible, please contact teachers or the guidance department regardless if the absence is
planned or unplanned. Electronic or scanned copies of assignments can often be sent home to complete.
