In This Packet: • Triple Threat Livestock Expo Information • Triple Threat Livestock Expo Flyer • Triple Threat Livestock Expo Registration Form Triple Threat Livestock Expo Contestant Packet iGrow.org 4-H & YOUTH Livestock Skill-a-Thon The Livestock Skill –a-thon will be held June 26 and 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The skill-a-thon will consist of questions about all four species: beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat. The questions will range from subject areas such as: carcass whole cuts and retail cuts, feed and nutrition, equipment, health and daily care, breed identification, and parts identification. Age divisions will be the following: • Beginners: Age 8-10 on or before January 1 of the current 4-H year • Juniors: Age 11-13 on or before January 1 of the current 4-H year • Seniors: Age 14-18 on or before January 1 of the current 4-H year and not have turned 19 on or before January 1 of the current year. Fitting and Clipping Clinics Starting at 9 a.m. through 12 p.m. on June 26, there will be rotating fitting and clipping clinics for all four species: beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat. Youth will learn tips and techniques to help prepare their animals for the show ring. Youth will be able to select up to three species to attend of their choice, or stay at one station of their choice to focus solely on that species. Youth Pork Quality Assurance Training There will be Youth Pork Quality Assurance Training on June 26 at 1 p.m. Youth participating in the swine project must complete this training once in the 4-H year to be eligible to show at the South Dakota State Fair. Livestock Judging School There will be a livestock judging school starting at 2 p.m. on June 26. Youth will learn about both breeding and market animals of each species: beef, sheep, swine and meat goat. The school will help youth understand what to look for in the confirmation of an animal, help with terms and tips for reasons, and help prepare youth for a livestock judging contest. Livestock Judging Contest The livestock judging contest will start at 4 p.m. on June 26. Youth may enter as a team of three or four participants or sign up as an individual. Registration is due to the Brown County 4-H Office by June 5. There will be one practice class where an instructor will walk through the class with the participants. Listed below are the rules, method of conduct and determination of ratings for the livestock judging contest. Livestock Judging Contestants and Eligibility Age Divisions for the Triple Threat Livestock Expo: • Beginners: Age 8-10 on or before January 1 of the current 4-H year • Juniors: Age 11-13 on or before January 1 of the current 4-H year • Seniors: Age 14-18 on or before January 1 of the current 4-H year and not have turned 19 on or before January 1 of the current year. Contestants must not have participated in or enrolled in official post-secondary (university, college, junior college, or technical school) competitive judging events, including judging courses, within animal science. Method of Conduct Contestants, parents, and coaches are to avoid the Livestock Complex the morning prior to the contest unless involved in the operation of the contest. In addition contestant, parents, coaches, and volunteers must conduct themselves in a courteous, respectful manner, use appropriate language, exhibit good sportsmanship and act as positive role models. Page 2 iGrow.org | A Service of SDSU Extension | © 2014, South Dakota Board of Regents • • Youth participating in the Triple Threat Livestock Expo Judging Contest will be required to respect others’ property and privacy rights, apply rules of safety to individuals, groups and property as well as accept personal responsibility for their behavior. Illegal behaviors including the possession or use of alcohol or illegal drugs and tobacco products; stolen goods; weapons and fireworks, sexual, physical or verbal abuse will not be tolerated. Law enforcement may be called and illegal behaviors may result in citations or arrest. Consequences may include removal from participation in the event; restitution or repayment of damages; sanctions and/or participation in future local, state, regional or national 4-H events; loss of status as a 4-H member in good standing, etc. Contestants should wear neat, clean, suitable clothing to uphold the image of the 4-H or FFA organization. No contestant shall wear any clothing, pins, or badges that will in any way reveal his/her identify or the county that he/she represents. No hats are to be worn during the contest. All electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, PDAs, calculators, etc.) are prohibited. Contestants are advised to remove these devices prior to the start of the contest. If a phone should ring of a competing contestant or it is discovered during competition the contestant and their team will be disqualified. Contestants will be divided into groups for the contest and will remain with their assigned group throughout the contest. While the contest is in progress, there is no conferring between contestants or between a contestant and anyone else except as directed by the Contest Superintendent or his/her representative. Offending contestants may be disqualified. Senior • Classes (depending on availability) will consist of any combination of Market Beef, Breeding Beef, Market Lamb, Breeding Sheep, Market Hog, Breeding Gilt, Market Goat, or Breeding Meat Goat. All classes will be comprised of four animals, and the animals will be designated with numbers 1-2-3-4. At least one breeding class will have performance data and a scenario included. • Reasons will be given on four classes. A questions class may be provided. Contestants are not permitted to use notes while giving oral reasons or completing questions. Junior • These classes (depending on availability) will consist of any combination of Market Beef, Breeding Beef, Market Lamb, Breeding Sheep, Market Hog, Breeding Gilt, Market Goat, or Breeding Meat Goat. All classes will be comprised of four animals, and the animals will be designated with numbers 1-2-3-4. • Reasons will be given on two classes. A questions class may be provided. Contestants are not permitted to use notes while giving oral reasons or completing questions. Beginner • Two minutes will be allowed to give oral reasons for those classes indicated as oral reason classes. • Contestants will be allowed 10-12 minutes per class to make their observations, take notes, and fill-out their placing card. Breeding Cattle and Market Beef will NOT be handled. All judging of non-reasons cattle classes will be done from a distance of 10 – 15 feet. Close inspections may be allowed. This will be determined after selection of classes. Breeding sheep and goats will not be handled since they will be loose in a pen. When handling Market Lambs or Meat Goats, contestants will stand in line and will be given 15 seconds to handle each lamb or goat individually. Lambs or goats may not be re-handled at any time. Determination of Ratings Fifty points shall constitute a perfect mark for placing classes and fifty points a perfect mark on oral reasons or questions. • If tied for overall individual or team awards, the contestant or team having the highest total reasons (for beginner’s, questions score used) score shall be listed first. If tied for total reasons score, the contestant or team having the lowest total placing score on reasons classes shall be listed first. If tied for a species award, the contestant or team having the highest reasons total reasons score on the species shall be listed first. If still tied, the contestant or team having the highest total reasons score overall shall be listed first. The officials’ placing and class critique will be given immediately following the conclusion of the contest once all placing and reasons cards have been submitted to the scoring committee. Official results will be tabulated and reviewed by an assigned committee prior to publicly announcing. Junior Point Show Rules and Regulations Check-Ins and Weigh-Ins All animals need to be checked-in and weighed-in by one of the two time lines to be entered in the show: Friday June 26: 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday June 27: 7 to 8 a.m. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) All animals including: beef, sheep, swine and meat goat must be accompanied by a CVI and shall have official identification listed on the CVI. Animals must be properly restrained to read official identification to avoid safety concerns for exhibitors, Triple Threat Livestock Expo staff, and assigned staff veterinarian. All animals entered at the exhibition shall be free from evidence of all contagious diseases such as ringworm, parasites, pinkeye, lump jaw, abscesses, club lamb fungus, and warts. Note: If warts have been removed surgically the scars must be healed by the time of the exhibition. ANIMALS MUST BE INSPECTED AND CVI’S MUST BE ISSUED, BOTH WITHIN 30 DAYS OF EXHIBITION. Each CVI must: • Be issued and signed by an accredited licensed veterinarian. • Show name and address of owner or exhibitor (consignor). • Show Triple Threat Livestock Expo as consignee and destination. • List each animal individually on the CVI. • List official identification (steel tags, Scrapie ID, tattoos, or RFID tags) and accessory ID devices (4-H tags, FFA tags, etc.) which are correlated to official identification on the CVI. • Show all required tests and results for that species. • List import shipping permit number. • List free of infectious or contagious diseases • List from non-quarantined herds or flocks NOTE: Each animal needs to have individual identification; however, it is acceptable to have several animals of the same species listed on one Certificate of Veterinarian Inspection. Animals that do not comply with identification methods and are not listed on the CVI will be denied entrance to the Triple Threat Livestock Expo. Registration Papers To be eligible for all Purebred or Registered Market or Breeding Shows (Beef, Breeding Sheep, and Swine), exhibitors are required to deliver a copy of the registration papers (in their name, farm name, family name, or sibling name) If the animal is leased, exhibitor will need to bring lease agreement and the registration papers of person the animal is leased from. Show Rules The Triple Threat Livestock Expo will follow the rules and guidelines of the South Dakota Junior Point Show Association. Placing will be turned in and exhibitors will receive credit for their points earned.
