Improvement Agenda – Literacy and Numeracy through NAPLAN
From our recent data reviews undertaken in Week Five we have taken steps to clarify how
we approach NAPLAN. As the testing items are derived from the Australian Curriculum, our
units of work are aligned with NAPLAN content. In simple terms the tasks on the tests are
based on current student learning. With the CQ3S Data tool teachers have been identifying
where students have responded correctly and where they gave an incorrect or nil response.
If the lead up to NAPLAN is managed correctly and targeted support is given to all students –
including the more able, NAPLAN can be an exciting challenge. It should not be something to
be feared or the source of undue anxiety. This much depends on the way the adults speak
with children about NAPLAN. I do not support putting children under serious pressure to
perform. However, if it is treated and viewed as a challenge to reach new heights in learning
then it can have some real benefit for the students. It’s all in how the right context is created.
Friday Fun Facts
Friday Fun Facts (renamed) continue to improve. Class percentages are trending in the right
direction. It is an expectation within the Australian Curriculum that the majority of students
can recall the basic facts (up to 10x with associated division facts) by the end of Year Four. I
expect we will reach this goal in 2015. Year Three averaged 73% in Week 8 which suggests
our progress is on track.
School Playground and Facilities
My thanks to all who have assisted with getting our playgrounds back in order. Thanks also
to Mrs Mallinson and Mrs Nolan-Munns for working on a submission for new equipment.
Hopefully, this will be successful as the Year Three students are lobbying strongly for a
suitable playground for them to use.
We have been advised that B Block will be painted over the Easter Vacation and that the old
building near the Tuckshop will be removed. Our school will be looking very smart indeed
when these projects are completed.
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
Recent reviews by the Regional Coach, Janelle Dickson indicated that the school has made
a successful attempt to embed the project across the school. Our SWPBS Committee
remains active and continues to promote positive behaviour approaches, including the Dysart
Dynamos.

School Cross Country
It is anticipated that we will hold our school cross country event on Thursday 23 April.
Hopefully, the weather will have cooled by that time.
2015 ANZAC Ceremony
Our school has accepted an invitation from the High School to participate in the 100th ANZAC
Commemoration arrangements, at the end of Week One in Term Two. We will participate as
we have in past years and further details will be provided immediately after the Easter
Vacation.
Easter Vacation
As this is the last newsletter prior to the holidays I wish to thank everyone for assisting me
and the staff this term. Personally, I have found Term One very rewarding and working with
the students has been most enjoyable. We are also saying a reluctant farewell to Mrs Leanne
Hutley and her family, as they move on to new and exciting opportunities. Leanne has been a
pleasure to work with and I will miss her presence in the office.
Finally, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break. Take care!

Before School and After School Procedures
Published by Dysart State School
top
Before School
There is no supervision provided by the school between 8:00am and 8:20am. Parents are responsible for their
children during this time. Classes welcome students at 8:20am.
If a student arrives at school prior to 8am they must sit in the office.
At 8am, a bell will ring in which they can sit at the tables outside of the Tuckshop, or be in an allocated
undercover area. Area B (Yr 5-6), Area C (P-4). In these areas they are to sit for friendly chatter or play
handball.
No footballs or larger balls are allowed before school. Tiggy is not a game to be played before school. Playing
on the playgrounds is inappropriate before school.
Students should not be riding around the school grounds on bikes or scooters – once students arrive, they
should go to the bike racks (preferably chained).
top
After School Procedures
There is no supervision provided by the school after 2:25pm. Parents are responsible for their children from
this time forth.
At 2:25pm –Bell will ring for end of school day. Students are to leave the school grounds.
2.40pm – Students should have departed from school grounds, unless with a ‘teaching’ parent or at your
child’s dancing lessons, then they must be with parent/guardian.
Running around the school grounds, playing in gardens or undercover area is not appropriate.
Students should not be riding around the school grounds on bikes or scooters.
School Grounds are out of bounds after school hours and consequences may occur by Admin or Police if
offenders repeat. This entails weekends & school holidays. Anyone that is in school grounds (out of school
hours) – must have Principal Approval in writing.
We also discourage parents or guardians bringing pets to school to collect their children. Your pet may be
very gentle but around other children an incident may occur. Some children also have a ‘fear’ of other
animals and bringing them to school can frighten them. Please leave all pets at home.

School Zone Safety
Published by Dysart State School
top
School zone times have been standardised in Queensland to help motorists remember when to slow down
during the set down hours. Please be aware of the school zone areas and in particular that cars are not to
park in the no standing zones or perform U-turns on the double white lines. It is essential that the
crossing supervisors have a clear and unobstructed view for the safety of the children.
Please note that parking or stopping in a bus zone is not permitted unless you are driving a bus. Parking
and stopping rules apply at all times unless the signed area lets you know otherwise. The designated
marked bus zones are not stop, drop and go zone and therefore signage must obeyed at all times. You
may receive a fine if you commit such offences.
It is important to remember to follow the instructions of the crossing staff whilst manning the crossing and
please do not walk across if they have not blown the whistle.
