Christ is risen!!! Our Christian imagination probably pictures the place where Jesus died and rose from the dead as a beautiful hill outside Jerusalem. But today, instead of that, you will see a very large and old church covering the area. Narrow streets lead to the church. That’s because in the early 300’s the Emperor Constantine’s mother, St. Helena, went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land and there found the hill and discovered the true cross buried in a cave near the hill. Helena’s son wanted to honor his mother’s discovery so he constructed a church on the site and there has been a structure over the site ever since. In one of my pilgrimages to the Holy Land, I was escorted to the place in the church that commemorates the place where Jesus was buried. There are many very large Easter Candles – like ours – near the tomb. But what fascinated me more was a room nearby where there were several indentations in the wall (cave-like holes) that our guide said were tombs similar to the one in which Jesus was buried. I was a lot younger then, so I attempted to crawl into one of those tombs. Not a good idea. Stone is hard and the tomb was dark and EMPTY! That experience, however, touched me more than the actual place of Jesus’ burial that is now surrounded by candles, religious symbols, and lines of pilgrims…. The dark, empty tombs nearby stirred in me feelings similar to what I believe the women felt who first came there on Sunday morning. The tomb was empty. “He is risen; he is not here!” It took faith and trust for those disciples to believe the truth found in the absence and to rush to the other disciples and tell them of their experience. Same for us! There is no proof; we must rely on the passing on of that story by believers for over 2000 years. Thank God for the faithful people generation after generation who have experienced Christ’s risen presence in the emptiness and dark! Thank God for the experience of Christ when we gather for Mass. • Christ is truly alive in this community of faith as we gather to celebrate the Easter mysteries. • Christ is truly present among us when we hear the Word of God proclaimed. • Christ is present in the priest as he retells – and makes present – the risen Lord among us…and, • Christ is present in the bread and wine that becomes the risen Lord which we receive. Can we prove any of this? If we could, it would not be “faith.” But faith is real, the experience of the risen Lord is ours – even in the sometimes emptiness and darkness of our lives. This Easter I ask you to reflect on those moments, wonderful and awful, where you have experienced the risen Lord. With the women who first witnessed the empty tomb, do you then dare go to other disciples - your family and friends - and tell them of this real presence of Christ? Alleluia! He is risen! Fr. Paul Demuth Pastor ADORATION Monday, April 6 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. SEAS Trinity Chapel Christ triumphs! He reigns! He rules! EASTERTIME PRAYER Risen Lord, I greet you with joy this Easter season, and I thank you for the gift of new life. Bless my family and friends and anyone who is lost or lonely or feeling far away from you. Grant that I might celebrate springtime in my heart each day as I rejoice in the Good News of your Resurrection. Alleluia! Amen. The Paschal Mystery is a core doctrine of the Church, but what do those words mean? They mean Christ’s saving work; the life, passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Christ. Easter Blessings to you from all of us at Holy Family School Pamela Otto, Principal (920) 494-1931
