SkillsUSA Winners Preparing for Nationals
Twenty two SECTA students who won gold and silver medals in Reno at the SkillsUSA State Competitions are now planning for the
SkillsUSA National Championships in Louisville, KY on June 22nd-27th. Two newly elected state officers, Daniella Munoz and Austin
Chavez, will also report to Louisville for training for their new positions.

math. These are some of SECTA’s best and they are all going to try for gold medals at the national level.

We are nearing the end of the year and the time to
celebrate all of our accomplishments. The seniors worked
diligently all year. The senior students completed their
Capstone Projects, Salon Observations, and Employability
Readiness Project. They are to be applauded for their
creativeness and efforts. We have supported several
community service projects, such as performing
cosmetology services for needy students and seniors
within our community. Students participated in a Mock
Interview Day with local salon professionals. This event was
an opportunity for our students to network and become
comfortable with the interview process. Seniors took the
Employability Exit Exam and Program Exit Exam which
is a standardized test given by the Nevada Department
of Education. These exams allow students to evaluate
their strengths and see what areas need additional fine
tuning prior to graduation. At the Nevada SkillsUSA
Championships, we captured the spirit of competition.
All of the students performed like champions and many
received medals for their efforts.

Three Gold Medalists will be competing at the National
SkillsUSA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky in
June. Angela Armijo will be the nail competitor, Jennifer
Hernandez-Moreno will compete in Cosmetology, and
Jasmine Perry will be the competitor for the Esthetician
Competition. We wish them all the BEST OF LUCK!
As we wind down 4 quarter, we will prepare our seniors
for licensure exams and salon readiness. They will fine
tune their skills and knowledge by taking mock state
board written and practical exams. Several students will
be taking their State Board Exams prior to graduation. We
look forward to graduation knowing that our seniors will
be an asset to our profession as they become employed
and successful individuals!

Freshmen CLASS
You have made it through
your first year of high school!
As you prepare for your
sophomore year, there are
many things you can do during the
summer to start to make the transition.
If you are planning to attend summer school, please see
me to register for classes. I will review transcripts when I
return from summer break to check for completed summer
school courses and make appropriate adjustments to
course selections at that time. If you are planning to take
core classes online during the school year, please call to
make a parent conference with Ms. Money and me. Also,
remember to check Secta.us for summer assignments
that will be due the first week of school.
I advise you to build your resumés and use the valuable
information that you learned this year, especially in your
Tools for Success class. Continue your college and career
search on nvcis.intocareers.org. This website is an excellent
resource to explore occupations, interests, and future goals.
You should also spend your extra time in the summer by
doing community service hours. Many scholarships and
college admission essays ask about contributions you
have made to your community. Summer is a great time
to volunteer your time. Come see me before you start
your hours to get a community service packet for possible
elective credit on your transcript.
I will be out of the office from June 10 until August 10. If
you would like to make changes to your course selections
for next year, please let me know by August 10, 2015. You

review change requests when I return.

Save the Date
At SECTA, our goal is to create a college bound community of learners. In order to
facilitate this goal, we will hold a Summer Senior Institute on August 4-6. Students
will engage in workshops that will help them investigate colleges, complete
college applications, explore financial aid, update resumes, identify sources for
recommendations, write college essays and learn about many other skills they
will need to become college ready. Time and cost have yet to be determined but
registration will begin soon. There will be only 30 spots available so students
should listen to announcements for directions.

SENIOR CLASS
Graduation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at the Orleans Arena. All
students will pick up their cap and gown on Friday, May 29 during lunch in the Commons.
Students will also pick up ten graduation tickets on the 29th during lunch as well. Requests
for additional tickets can be made through Mr. Brockovich in the 12th grade office.
Every senior will check-out with Mr. Herrick after all fees are paid, all books are returned,
and all students have met with Mr. Galyean in the Career Center to provide him with all
college acceptances and scholarship awards that were earned. Seniors who are not on
track for graduation will meet with Mr. Herrick to discuss summer school and alternative
options for securing their diplomas.
Ms. Money and I are proud of your accomplishments and
look forward to continue working with you in the fall.
It has been a pleasure serving the class of 2015. I wish nothing but the best to each senior
as they move on to further their education, enlist in the military, or join the workforce.

SOPHOMORE CLASS
Congratulations on coming
even closer to your goal of
graduation! Now that the year is
over it is time to focus on a few
important areas moving forward. First, have a great summer!
Next, if you are planning on taking honors or AP courses
in the fall there are summer assignments that must be
completed and will be graded during the new school year.
The information about these assignments can be found
on the secta.us website.
Also, the summer is an excellent opportunity to complete
community service for scholarships and college applications!
Summer school starts June 15 and runs through July 23.
If summer school is needed it is important to enroll with
the counselor before June 8. After that date, contact the
summer school site directly to enroll.
The last day to make changes to next year’s schedule will
be August 18, 2015.
Enjoy your time off and remember to look at college
prospects and prepare for the application process when
you come back! Have fun, relax, and enjoy your families!

COUNSELORS’CORNER
Students can meet with their respective counselors to sign up for summer school through the last day of the school
year. Summer school flyers and information are available in the Counseling Office and have been provided to students
since mid-April. All summer school classes are $100 per semester course. Students can enroll in two semesters at a
regular school site and two semesters on Nevada Learning Academy.
All students planning to enroll in any classes required for graduation through Nevada Learning Academy during the 201516 school year must have a parent conference with the counselor and the administrator of their respective grade levels
for approval before students will be enrolled.
All counselors will be out of the office for the summer at the conclusion of graduation on Tuesday, June 9 and will
return to work on Monday, August 10. Counselors will move with their students to the next grade level, with Mr. Herrick,
currently the 12th grade counselor, moving to grade 9 for the class of 2019.
Incoming Freshmen Orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 18 in the Commons.

3D ANIMATION FOR FILM & GAMES
3D Animation for Film & Games is wrapping up another exciting and eventful year. Two junior students, Ashley Armenta
and Daniel Nordin, placed 2nd at the State SkillsUSA competitions which were held in Reno this spring. They are already
looking forward to next year’s “rematch”. Meanwhile, the senior students have been working on animation projects that
integrate modeling and animation skills with several different augmented reality apps. Students have been uploading their
projects files to www.sketchfab.com or www.aurasma.com so that they can easily share their work with prospective
employers or college reps using a smartphone, tablet, or iPad.
NEW
EDUCATOR
OF THE YEAR
Students who choose this career cluster are automatically enrolled in both animation and digital game development
courses. This provides an opportunity to participate in several cross-curricular activities. For example, the first project
in the junior class was to model a game level based on a famous historic event. Once the design and modeling were
complete, students had to apply their “newly acquired” coding skills to make their levels playable. Look for a link to a
two-level demo of the game on our 3D Animation page at www.secta.us .
Junior students are also working on making original games for the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality gaming headset. Our
class currently has three headsets for use in game development. The Oculus Rift is set to hit the consumer market next
spring and our students will already have experience creating original products for it.
The animation class also added some new equipment this year in the form of two new 22” HD Wacom monitors. These
monitors allow students to draw right on the computer screen. It’s been a busy year for the students, but we’ve been able
to meet our challenges head on and experiment with some new technology. Mr. Apgar, the Digital Game Development
teacher, and Mrs. Gombarcik, the Animation teacher, are already planning some exciting and challenging projects for the fall.

wonderful honor for a GREAT team member! Ms.
DeSimone dedicates countless hours to making
SECTA a better place for all students!

During the month January Pride Alliance participated in
DoSomething.Org’s annual Teens for Jeans Campaign.
Donating 424 pair of jeans, we placed in the top 200

Class
Rolling out sugar cookies in Culinary
SECTA was pleased to welcome 29 students to Bring Your
Child to Work Day on April 23rd.
The day started off for these young people by playing a
game together to get to know each other. After that they
were given their choice of going to Culinary or Art for a
class period where they either made cookies or worked
on their own art project.
The next class period was their choice of TV Productions
or Construction, working with the green screen in TV
Productions or making their own tool box in Construction.
All of them spent two class periods in Cosmetology either
having their hair done, getting a manicure, pedicure, or
facial. The day concluded with them joining their parent
in SECTA’s Culinary Dining Room enjoying a special lunch
prepared by SECTA’s culinary students.
A good time was had by all!
