ABOUT SEDA
PROGRAM PATHWAY
SEDA Group (SEDA) exists to engage, educate and empower young people as they transition from
school to employment or further study. The program was established in 2006 to meet the needs of
young people whose education preference is for an applied and context relevant learning experience.
SEDA engages students in their education by connecting their passion to a hands-on learning
environment. Students have the opportunity to complete their Year 11 and 12 and gain nationally
recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications through Registered Training
Organisations (RTOs).
SEDA works with the strengths of each young person to develop their self-confidence and self-worth
through positive learning experiences. SEDA provides all students with the opportunity to develop
key life skills, including organisation, independence and teamwork, which will see them prepared
for the real world.
Completing a Senior Secondary Certificate, through the delivery of the Victorian
Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) curriculum, is the cornerstone of the SEDA
program. SEDA recognises that a Year 12 completion is fundamental to a young
person’s long term personal, social and career development.
All SEDA students also undertake VET Certificates which contribute to their Senior Secondary
Certificate and develop their industry specific credentials, allowing them to transition into work
or further study. With a strong connection to industry, students develop initiative, communication,
leadership, resilience and critical thinking skills. This provides SEDA graduates with the opportunity
to gain employment across numerous industries.
In the final year of the program, students study a Diploma of Sport Development. Students who
successfully complete their Diploma have the opportunity to gain direct entry into one of a range
of courses offered by SEDA’s partner universities.
The result is mature, resilient and capable young men and women who, on successfully completing their
secondary education, are empowered with a range of pathway choices, be it further study or employment.
PROGRAM OUTLINE – SPORTS
Over 2000 students are currently completing their education with SEDA in Victoria, Western Australia
and the Northern Territory.
Students have the opportunity to complete curriculum
combining VET and VCAL qualifications.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
WORK EXPERIENCE
SEDA recognises that opportunities to
experience the workplace environment
are essential in helping young people
develop career aspirations. All SEDA
students undertake Structured Workplace
Learning (SWL) in each of the two years
of the Senior Secondary program.
COMMUNITY WORK DAY
Students are exposed to a variety of
community groups one day a week during
their time in the program. This community day
allows a student to develop their work readiness
skills and exposes them to a variety of community
groups including multi-cultural, recent arrival,
all abilities and Indigenous groups.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
SEDA programs have community work built
into the curriculum, with students choosing
the focus of their project. The projects aim
to provide young people with authentic,
relevant learning experiences.
INDUSTRY PARTNER WORK
A strength of the SEDA program is its
ability to provide real-world learning
experiences through SEDA’s industry
partners. Alongside the opportunities built
into the program curriculum, there are
also additional opportunities provided by
partner organisations. These opportunities
provide young people with valuable work
experience in their preferred industry and
powerful networks for future employment.

WHERE ARE
THEY NOW?
JAMES LIGGINS, 2010
Participation Coordinator
– Hockey Australia
“The SEDA program opened my eyes to many
areas of the sporting industry, including running
programs with Indigenous and multicultural
groups and working with students with disabilities.”
CHRIS MCKAY, 2012
Football Technology Assistant – St Kilda Football Club
Before coming to SEDA, James felt himself losing interest
in his non-sport related subjects. He felt that SEDA
would best suit his ambitions to work in sport
and recreation. Through the SEDA program,
James had the opportunity to work and volunteer
with a range of organisations, including Cricket
Australia, Big Dog Events and Belgravia
Leisure. He believes that these experiences
helped him develop into a strong leader
and network within the industry.
“My current role at St Kilda Football Club is entirely due to the
work placement opportunity I received in my final year at SEDA.”
Chris found out about the SEDA program when he was in Year 11
and, although he enjoyed school, he decided that a sportfocused education program would suit him best. During the
program, Chris was able to develop his communication and
teamwork skills while delivering clinics to primary school
children and completing event management projects.
In his final year, Chris was offered work placement at
St Kilda Football Club. This work placement led to Chris
being offered the role of Football Technology Assistant
with the club at the completion of the SEDA program.
Chris’s ambition is to move into a development coaching
role, as he has had the opportunity to work closely with
the St Kilda coaching team over the past two years.
ASHLEIGH MILLS, 2011
Bachelor of Nursing/Midwifery
– Victoria University
“The SEDA program taught me that many things in
life are possible – you just have to work hard for them.”
Ashleigh enjoyed school and she was passionate about
learning. When she heard about the SEDA program,
she could not pass up the opportunity to combine her two
passions: sport and education. Ashleigh’s most memorable
experience was her work placement with Cricket Victoria,
which gave her the opportunity to work at matches at
the MCG, gain experience in advertising and media
and develop programs for Indigenous youth.
When Ashleigh graduated from SEDA, she started her
own personal training business which she ran for three
years. After this time, Ashleigh decided she wanted to
return to study and she is currently completing a Bachelor
of Nursing/Midwifery at Victoria University. Ashleigh
believes the communication skills she learnt at SEDA
have been essential both when running her own
business and working as a nurse.
10
As a result of his work experience, James
secured a role as a Development Officer
with Cricket Victoria after graduating
from SEDA. Following this role, James
began to work at Hockey Victoria
and he is now working as a
Participation Coordinator
with Hockey Australia.
GRACE DEVESON, 2011
Bachelor of Health and Physical Education –
Deakin University
“The skills learnt in the SEDA program helped
me make the transition into university study.”
Grace has always had a passion for sport and, when she
heard about the SEDA program, she thought it would be
a perfect way for her to start her career in PE teaching
or coaching. Grace’s highlight of the SEDA program
was networking with different people in the sports
industry and making new friends with other students
who shared her passion for sport.
SEDA gave Grace the chance to develop her skills in
teaching, coaching and communication, which have
helped her transition from high school into tertiary study.
Grace is currently completing her final year in the Bachelor
of Health and Physical Education at Deakin University.
When Grace finishes her degree, she hopes to become
a PE, Health and History teacher at a secondary school.

JOSH KRUSE, 2012
Bachelor of Journalism (Sport)
– La Trobe University
“The work placement opportunities at
SEDA were valuable learning experiences
as I was challenged on many occasions.”
SHAILEE SMITH, 2014
When Josh first heard about the SEDA program,
he was excited about the possibility of combining his love
of sport with his education. The highlight of the program
for Josh was the work placement component.
Josh was able to complete work placement
in a gym, where he was offered an ongoing
part-time job, and at Collingwood Football Club,
where he helped run their multicultural program.
Personal Trainer – Freedom Fitness
Women’s Health and Fitness Centre
“The independence and confidence I gained at
SEDA has helped me achieve success in my role.”
Shailee found out about the SEDA program through a friend and,
after researching the program, she knew it would suit her passion
for sport and fitness. The highlight of the program for Shailee was
the opportunity to develop her independence and confidence.
After finishing at SEDA, Josh commenced the
Bachelor of Journalism (Sport) at La Trobe
University. As part of this course, Josh has
worked at the Australian Grand Prix and
travelled to the Singapore Grand Prix
as an FIA Internationally Accredited
Journalist. He plans to move to
the UK after finishing his studies
to continue to work as a
Journalist on the
F1 circuit.
After graduating, Shailee accepted a position as a Personal
Trainer at Freedom Fitness Women’s Health and Fitness Centre.
Her role involves running personal training sessions, conducting
group fitness classes and assisting with administration.
The opportunity to build her public speaking skills at SEDA
means that she can now talk confidently to clients and achieve
success in her role. In the future, Shailee hopes to own her
own successful personal training business.
MITCH REID, 2012
Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management/
Bachelor of Business (Marketing) – Victoria University
“SEDA gave me the skills I need to gain a position at university
and work towards a career in sport management.”
Throughout high school, Mitch always wanted a career
in the sports industry and, after hearing about the SEDA
program through friends, he decided that SEDA was
the right pathway for his future.
The highlight of the program for Mitch was his final
industry placement in the Community Department
at the North Melbourne Football Club. He was
able to develop a number of different work skills
including communication and time management.
These skills meant Mitch could successfully
articulate into study at Victoria University,
undertaking a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation
Management/Bachelor of Business (Marketing).
In the future, Mitch hopes to work as an athlete
manager or in a fan/game development
role with a sporting club.
