Principal’s Pen
Dear Parents
Our new P&C met last Wednesday and have a great year planned. These plans
include services, improvements to our school, fundraising and special events. Our new
P&C executives are Kier Shorey - President, Werner Drescher – Treasurer, Astrid
Addicoat-White and Anita Zass—Vice Presidents, Shelley Turner – Secretary. Our
previous P&C President Yvonne Gardner will be staying involved sharing the
Secretary role. We already have a professional working relationship with this team.
Coming events include Mothers’ Day (Don’t tell mum) Markets each morning this
week, Great Family Breakfast (Wednesday 20th May), Book Fair (18th – 22nd May)
and a Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 22nd May.
Another initiative of the P and C is “Helping Hands” whereby you can join a group
that is invited to help at various events and promotions. Send an email to
[email protected] to join the email group and receive the updates.
Our Bike Park was full last Thursday with 134 bikes spending the day waiting for their
owners to take them home. It is great weather for cycling especially safe cycling. Our
Bike Bus happens every Thursday to help newcomers in particular. With over a
thousand students it is important that everyone arrives at school safely and safely
returns home each day whether by foot, bike, car or other method.
Finally our 2016 Prep enrolment process is underway and anyone in our area
needs to be enrolled as we have fewer places in 2016 than 2015. Until next week
enjoy your child’s learning journey, it is magic!

District Cross Country
Last Friday Edge Hill State School
sent their best 10y.o.-12y.o. runners (3
boys & girls from each age group) to
the District Cross Country held on the Cairns Esplanade. All our runners gave their all
and ran fantastically well, and in doing so helped our school finish Runners Up to this
year’s district champions Whitfield! Five of our runners including Noah Jones, Sena
Nakajima, Ana Aras, Patrick Johnson and Mya Cozzoul who all finished in the top 4
for their age group will now go on to represent Cairns District at the upcoming
Peninsula Regional Championships on Friday 22nd May! Special mention must go to
both Mya Cozzoul & Patrick Johnson who were both crowned 12 year old Primary
School Aged Champions! We at Edge Hill State School wish them all the very best!!!

PREP
Thankyou Parents and Carers, - it was so good
to see so many people eager to hear more
information about Reading at Home and your
children’s homework activities. Please keep
talking with us if you have any questions about
your child’s homework. This week the children
are excited to display their flags for Japanese
Children’s Day (yesterday) but then most are
excited most days! Maths in Prep is learning
around shapes so your child may be keen to spot
and talk shapes in their home. Finally, Happy
Mother’s Day to all you devoted and hard working
Mums
YEAR 1
The Year 1s had a visit from the Fire Department
on Monday 27th April. The fire-fighters talked to
us about good and bad fires and what to do in
case of an emergency. To help your child in
case of an emergency, talk to them about your
own evacuation plan and a safe meeting
place. A good idea is to also teach your child
their address in case they have to ring 000.
In LOTE, Mr Gunning is teaching us how to say
the names of colours in Japanese. On May 5th,
we celebrated Kodomo no Hi (Children’s
Day). We learnt a song and made some koinobori (carp streamers).
YEAR 3
What a fantastic week we've had. Students have
been writing wonderfully imaginative stories,
investigating how big Earth really is,
and generally being organised and ready to
learn. Well done Year 3. Keep up the good work
and don't forget to read everyday!
Little Athletics Queensland Visit
Last week the Prep and Year 1`s were very
lucky to receive a visit from Kate and Tina
from Little Athletics Queensland . These
coaches will be running the LAPS program
over the next 4 weeks on a Wednesday and
Thursday which will teach them throwing,
running and jumping skills.
On the first session The children were
especially excited to throw the mini javelins
and jump over the mini hurdles as well as
do the triple jump!
At the end of the 4 weeks children will
receive a nice certificate to recognise their
participation.
At the end of this term we have our sports
carnival so the children will be eager to
show you the skills they have learnt in the
LAPS program and during their regular
lessons with me.
Japanese News
Musical Notes
Thank you to those families who have
contacted me to register their interest in
hosting
students
from
Japan
in
Term 3.
You will receive further
information in the next week or so.
Auditions for Peter Pan have now
concluded and we had an
incredible 150 students in Grades
4-6 audition to be involved which is
amazing.
The full cast list will be announced this
week up on the Music Room window.
Along with the details of characters and
who are playing them also will be the
details of our first rehearsal next week.
During
this
rehearsal
important
information and letters will be given out
so attendance is important.
With Naplan happening in Years 3 and 5
next
week
some
students
may
unfortunately find they miss their
instrumental lessons, however all before
school ensembles are still on. These are
vital to attend as the Big Breakfast is in
Week 5 so next week is the final
rehearsal for our Senior groups before
this performance. Rehearsals will finish
with plenty of time to make it back to
class before Naplan tests begin.
The Big Breakfast in Week 5 will feature
performances from our Senior Concert
Band, Senior String Orchestra, Junior
String Orchestra and Senior and Junior
Choirs. Notes will be coming home this
week with all of the required information
on them.
It is not too late! If you would like to host
visiting students from Japan in Term 3,
please
contact
me
by
email
[email protected] or by registering your
interest at the office.
