Special Mother’s Day
Concert featuring
Rev. Dr. Lily Chou
In honor of all mothers for Mother’s Day, Dr.
Lily Chou will perform a concert with focus
on the theme of “Love.” Chou will play
composers spanning almost 250 years and
encompassing the baroque, classical,
romantic and contemporary periods. She will
tell the story of why each composer wrote
that particular work, whether it is his love
for his God, his country, his parent or child,
his sibling or friend, his teacher, or student
or even a pet! Knowing the background
stories, is sure to enhance your listening
pleasure. The entire “love” offering will be
donated to the church, so please bring
friends and be generous.

Dr. Lily Chou has been our music director
since last September. She is a retired
Methodist ordained minister of the N.C.
Conference, having served eight Methodist
churches. She began piano lessons at age five
in Hong Kong and came to the U.S. for her
college education. She received a B.A. cum
laude from Bob Jones University, majoring in
piano and minoring in English; a M.S. from
Juilliard School of Music, a D.M.A. from Duke
Divinity School. She has performed in five
continents and in such prestigious halls as
Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Carnegie Hall
in New York, Chicago Cultural Center,
Sanders Theatre of Harvard, and city halls in
major cities of the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong
Kong, China, etc.

Chou was once broadcast live on TV for 300,000,000 when she
played Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto with the China Broadcasting
Symphony Orchestra. She has taught in several universities and
colleges in this country, Taiwan and the Philippines. Over forty of
her graduates overseas have received their high degrees in the
USA.
Lily and her husband, Leland, have been residents of Sedona for
five years. They have two sons, Philip and Leon and a
granddaughter who is one and another coming in May! Lily’s
vision is that many will come to know the love of God through the
language of music -- whereas once she sneaked a little God into
her music, now she sneaks a little music into her God.

flowers and kazoo (we return to Canada on my wife's
birthday--March 25th). Also, a real pleasure to meet you

Church Office Update From SPRC
"Save the Date": Saturday- June 6 UMW Annual Spring Luncheon & Fashion Show
Beginning with the first week of January, 2015, our Administrative Assistant’s hours have
been reduced due to budget limitations. Vicki now works 18 hours per week instead of her
previous 28 hours per week. Vicki is in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:004:00 and works from home a half day on Wednesdays. On Mondays and Wednesdays, we do
our best to cover the office with volunteers. So, between Vicki and the office volunteers, we
are usually able to staff the office Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The office remains closed on Fridays.
More details will be forthcoming and registration will start in May.

5th Annual Swap Meet
Saturday, May 2, from 8 a.m. until Noon
Church’s Front Parking Lot
Our 5th Annual Swap Meet, sponsored by the Special Events
Team (SET), will be held in the church’s front parking lot
Saturday morning, May 2nd, from 8 until noon. The Swap Meet
started 5 years ago when the Sunday School Class studied Adam
Hamilton’s “Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and
Generosity”. The intention is to have fun while simplifying your life by ridding your home of clutter
and things you have been holding onto that you think others will appreciate.
Our history at SUMC is that some folks sell gently used items, knickknacks, kitchen items,
collections, crafts, etc. What you don’t sell, you take home or drop it off at one of the local thrift
stores. SUMC participants are asked to give a minimum of 10% of the money collected from their
sales. More is always welcome. Proceeds benefit the General Fund and Verde Valley Sanctuary.
How do you get involved? There are 30 spaces available. You can choose from 6 foot or 8 foot
tables or bring your own. Sign-ups will begin on Easter, April 5th. SUMC members will be given first
choice. After April 19th, we will open up to outside vendors which will be allowed with a $25
deposit. As usual, SET will provide the advertising. A tip sheet is available on the sign-up poster.

Wellness Notes —
Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over,
will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
Luke 6:38 ESV
As we enter this Easter Season, having walked the Lenten journey and faced our wilderness experience, let us look
now where we go from here. We strive to be more like our Lord with giving as our focus. However, I am
frequently reminded how we may look at giving so strongly, that we forget to look at RECEIVING.
I am reminded of a dear friend who was one of the most 'giving' individuals I have ever met. She was always
available to council, listen, reach out, supply resources and love teach, and assist in every sort of trial faced by
those she loved. This was just her personality, gifts, and calling. She was always the "Cheerful Giver" who could be
counted on when the journey got rough. Countless members of her family, faith community, and surrounding
community were the beneficiaries of her loving care. Then came the day that she was in need. It was sudden,
devastating, and unexpected. No longer was she able to reach out and give. She and her loved ones needed help
and support. It was, however, so very difficult for her to be a "Cheerful Receiver". She felt undeserving, uncertain,
and distressed, knowing she needed what others could give, yet feeling guilty, uncomfortable, and unable to
lovingly accept what they had to offer. This became a difficult situation. Those who loved her were so called to
reach out and give, they saw needs she had that their gifts could fill, they wanted so desperately to 'give back'
some of the loving care that they had received from her in the past. It seemed like there was no way they could
get around the hesitancy they perceived from their loved one. Here is where we all need practice!!
"Give and it well be given to you", "Ask and you well receive", "As you give, so shall you receive"--we have heard
this over and over in our life. BUT, do we realize that the one giving must have a 'fertile field' onto which to plant
their gifts? The one to whom they are giving must be willing and able to receive what if offered. That takes practice!!
--Can we easily say "THANK YOU"? (refraining from the popular "No Problem" response!)
--Can we easily welcome the hugs, smiles, meals, transportation, resources, listening ears, and shoulders to cry on?
--Can we allow ourselves to see the love held out by the giver, and practice gratitude, graciousness, and calm in the
face of the gift?
--Can we see in the eyes and action of the one giving to us, the need to be needed, the drive to return a loving
kindness, and the loving hand of Jesus that is reaching out to us?
As we journey ahead from the Easter experience, let us practice cheerful receiving, loving patience in the
receiving of other's gifts, and gratitude for the 'returned favors' and love that comes our way. In this way, we refill
our pitchers and are better able to pour out again to others.
As we give, let us also learn to receive.

Introducing the “IGNITE” Project
The purpose of the $2,000 gift to each church from our
Conference Bishop was to inspire us to create an
ORIGINAL project which would renew enthusiasm and joy
church wide, provide outreach to the community, and
possibly be a fundraising event.
Selecting from an extensive list of 50 projects, our plan is to produce one to four LIVE
productions of Biblical events, modernized and highlighting religious events and
holidays. Hence the name, “SUMC LIVE.”
The primary event would be a brightly decorated church for Christmas with a manger
scene with some live “actors” and animals. Hopefully, this will draw visitors and
perhaps eventually we will be joined by other nearby churches, even in a competition.
The concept was based on the “Red Rock Fantasy” previously done at Los Abrigados in
Sedona. We will need some donations of used Christmas lights, greenery, statues, etc.
which will minimize the cost.
This brings to life a major Biblical event and attracts people to our church like the
pumpkin patch did. In fact, if we work with the Key Club at the high school or Young
Life, we may be able to bring back the pumpkin patch.
A second project of expanding the Vacation Bible School at our church into a week-long
“day camp” in the fall and spring could also include live productions of Biblical stories
and parables at the camp.
Currently the committee now consists of only Gene Chandler and Ellen Brooks.
Representatives from other committees are invited to join us.
We began the IGNITE Project on Palm Sunday with a Procession of Palms, following the
choir into the church, and welcoming ALL into the Sanctuary and again welcoming ALL
to our Fellowship time after the service with a Procession of the Palms. We look forward to another event in the summer. If you are interested in joining our planning sessions, please contact Ellen Brooks at (928)282-4848.

This event is sponsored by the Missions Team! We
will take a free will offering to benefit both the
Phoenix Boys Choir and Sedona UMC.
Please consider helping with this event. The Choir
will be spending the night in Sedona. We are
looking for folks to open their homes for an
overnight stay. There will be 30 boys who will
need accommodations along with a sack lunch for
the next day. We will also feed them dinner before

Anna’s Circle

Anna’s Circle explores these and other
questions as they study the book of
Exodus. Lively discussions, a caring
fellowship, and the desire to study God’s
word is characteristic of the group.

a.m. (except the 1st Thursday of the
month when UMW meets) in the

St. Pat’s Day Silent Auction
Jan Shuman and the Christian
Education Team would like to extend a
heartfelt thank you to everyone who
contributed items for the St. John
Vianney St. Pat’s Day Silent Auction.
The donations from SUMC were most
generous. The final tallies on the
fundraiser are not yet in, but Betty
McGinnis of St. John Vianney stated
that she expected the results to be
“very good.”
Membership Class
Holy Spirit Bible Study
Megan Carder will be teaching a
Membership Class for Odie Overbee
and Carl Williams. Many thanks to
Megan for taking time out of her busy
schedule, as a Kindergarten teacher at
West Sedona School and as a fulltime
mother of 2, to teach this class. Upon
completion of the class, Odie and Carl
will be confirmed as members of the
SUMC congregation.

Summer Church Camp
Holy Boldness Men’s Bible Study
Wednesday Mornings – 9:00AM
The brochures about Summer Church
Camp at Mingus Mountain are now
available and can be picked up in
either the church office or from Jan
Shuman.
This Bible study group is currently discussing
the Book of Romans. So far, we have
discussed the relationship of Jew and Gentile
in God’s overall plan for redemption. We’ve
also debated, as Paul does, the topics of faith
versus works, law and grace, sin and
righteousness, judgment and justification.
This camp is open to all children from
elementary through high school.
However, the week long camps fill
quickly, so applications should be
submitted soon. Payment in full does
not need to be made at the time of the
registration; however, a registration fee
must accompany the application in
order to reserve a place for the child or
youth.
In a one hour open discussion format, which
begins with a word of prayer, we seek to
discover God’s message to the 21st Century
Christian grappling with these same issues.
After that time of reading, reflection and
discussion, we sometimes finish with more
questions than answers.
Anyone may sponsor a child by helping
to pay their the camp fees. Please
write a check payable to Sedona
United Methodist Church and mark the
envelope “Summer Church Camp.”
The moneys will be divided equally
among the SUMC children who wish to
attend camp this summer. This will
help offset the cost of attending
summer church camp. For these children and youth, Summer Church Camp
at Mingus Mountain will be a highlight
of their summer break.
As we leave the group each week, we are
thankful for the many insightful comments

Adult Sunday School Class
SUMC would like to resume the Sunday
Morning Adult Sunday School Class.
The class could have two sessions:
8:00 a.m. (before church service)
10:45 a.m. (after church service — so that choir
may participate)
The format is flexible. Topics and study material could be
decided by the group. The sessions are also flexible: short
term, 6-8 weeks with leaders taking turns.

School. VBS is looking for
volunteers to help with the best
summer program in Sedona.
June 8-12
(9-12 daily)
St. John Vianney Church
For all children K through grade 6
(Preschool for ages 4 and 5)
Volunteer for 1 day, a few days, or for all 5 days. Help is needed
in all areas. Help to give the children of Sedona and the Verde
Valley a week to remember all summer long.
There will be a sign up sheet in the SUMC Narthex.
