TAPPING NEW
TALENTS
RUTH MCCOSKER
A COMPETITION aimed at
encouraging Queensland
secondary school students to
study building design courses is
now open for entries.
The Built Horizons Project is
hosted in partnership with
Construction Skills
Queensland (CSQ) and the
Department of Education,
Training and Employment.
Students are given a design
brief to create sustainable
structures in one of three
uniquely Queensland locations
– a family home in Longreach,
youth housing in shipping
containers along the Brisbane
River or accommodation for
students on Heron Island.
CSQ chief executive Brett
Schimming said a growing gap
in the number of students
enrolling in building design
courses prompted the industry
to offer the thought-provoking
competition.
“This project encourages
creative young Queenslanders
to take a real-life look at the role
building designers play in
construction,” he said.
A panel of industry experts
will judge the entries, with the
top five designs for each brief
going on display at Brisbane’s
Sustainable Experience Expo in
June. The best entries will also
be featured at the Asia Pacific
Design Library within the State
Library of Queensland.
Students at Pine Rivers State
High School and Marist College
Ashgrove have already
embraced the competition.
Pine Rivers design and
technology teacher Lisa
Blackmore described the
challenge as a great
opportunity for students.
“It gives them a good
grounding for what they could
be doing in the future,” she said.
Year 12 student Rhiannon
Arkell, part of a three-member
team, encouraged other girls to
be involved in the maledominated industry.
“Having a female and a male
perspective (in design) is
important, as everyone has a
different view on things,”
Rhiannon said.
The competition closes on
June 3. Entry is free and
students are not required to use
any specific design technology
with their entries.
