Leading Light gets his neck in front in G1 Gold Cup

Successful in the G3 Queen=s Vase here last year and
also the G1 St Leger at Doncaster, Leading Light had
advertised his staying credentials further when taking
the G3 Vintage Crop S. on his return at Navan May 18
and employed his seemingly bottomless stamina
reserves to provide trainer Aidan O=Brien with a
remarkable sixth renewal out of the last nine.
Positioned just off the pace early by Joseph O=Brien,
the 10-11 favorite was driven along before the straight
with Ryan Moore looking more comfortable on last
year=s Royal winner just in behind. Holding his line on
Leading Light as Moore tried to switch out at the top of
the stretch, the younger O=Brien drew more from his
mount who, despite veering left and then right when in
front, had just enough left to hold on by a neck, with
just a short head between Estimate and the long-time
leader Missunited (Ire) (Golan {Ire}) in a pulsating finale.
AI kept a straight line all the way up the straight and
Ryan was looking for a bit of room, as he was entitled
to, but I was well entitled to keep what I had,@ Joseph
O=Brien explained. AWhen he got to the front, he had a
little look and just came out for a stride but he=s a big,
laidback horse. He stays well, but I think he=ll be better
over a mile and six. I was rowing away and trying to
hold off giving him a belt for as long as I could. Ryan
helped me, pushing me along a bit on the inside. But
this fella is as tough as nails.@

Twelve months ago, Leading Light was becoming the
last to win the Queen=s Vase while it enjoyed Group 3
status, showing the kind of battling qualities that he
was to become famed for in a matter of weeks. Not
short of pace, as he had previously proven when
successful over 10 furlongs in a decent Navan
conditions event and the G3 Gallinule S. at The Curragh
in May, he returned after a summer break to beat the
G1 Oaks winner Talent (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) in
Doncaster=s St Leger before being allowed to take his
chance in the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe. With Gerald
Mosse on board, he blew the start and never looked
likely to get into contention on the testing ground,
winding up 12th in that Longchamp showcase. But all
the buzz was back as he returned to defy a penalty in
impressive style in the Vintage Crop. Allowed time to
cross over and join the group from his wide draw here,
he was soon perfectly positioned in fourth, with
Estimate covered up down on his inner and Missunited
happy setting the pace under Jim Crowley. That
remained largely the status quo until the approach to
the home turn, where Joseph O=Brien was starting to
row along and his animation was in contrast to the
smoothness of Richard Kingscote up ahead on Brown

Considered worthy enough and Ballydoyle=s numberone choice when eighth going six furlongs in the Listed
Naas Fillies= Sprint S. on debut last June 3, Bracelet

sophomore bow Mar. 30, she failed to land a blow

the main event on the straight Rowley Mile last time
May 4. She provided a first win of the meet--and the
opening of a double--and a welcome boost to the
flagging fortunes of Team Ballydoyle with a brave score
in this stamina test. AThe yard=s horses have been
running very ordinary,@ admitted Aidan O=Brien. AThey
all seem healthy before they come here, but some have
been running very poor races, so it=s a big relief.
Some we thought would run better and for no reason
they=re running badly. We just have to be patient, but
we=re delighted to get this.@ Alain de Royer-Dupre
trainee and 9-4 chalk Vazira (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}),
runner-up in the May 25 G1 Prix Saint-Alary at
Longchamp last time, ran on from racing at the rear to
claim fourth nearing the line. However, jockey
Christophe Soumillon was less than satisfied with
procedures at the gate and felt that she may have fared
better with a delayed loading. ALast time, she showed
us that she was very difficult in the gate and since her
first start she=s worn a blanket for stalls entry,@ he
explained. AWe asked today to go late to the gate, but
she didn=t go last. She stayed there a bit too long and
didn=t jump out of the stalls. When you lose four or five
lengths with a filly who should be ridden up with the
pace, it=s very hard to make up ground even with a
good pace. I=m disappointed, because if we went in the
stalls last she would be fine and jump out much better.
You can=t come four-wide to make your move, you have
to wait for luck. She finished well, but if we had a better
position I think that we would be close to winning.@
ALGA STRIKES IN THE NORFOLK
Having made all three prior starts going six furlongs,
including a last-out win in the Listed Woodcote S. at
Epsom on G1 Derby Day June 7, Baitha Alga (Ire) (Fast
Company {Ire}) exhibited scintillating speed dropped
one panel to secure a comfortable score in yesterday=s
G2 Norfolk S., continuing Al Shaqab Racing=s dream
start to the Royal meet. Steadied four lengths off the
pace in fourth through slick early fractions, the 8-1
chance loomed large going best with 1 1/2 furlongs
remaining, and was ridden clear once taking over
passing the eighth pole to easily account for Mind of
Madness (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths. Ahlan
Emarati (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was a further
2 1/4 lengths adrift in third. AHe ran a super race at
Epsom, the team were very confident and I=m so
pleased he got the job done,@ enthused winning rider
Frankie Dettori. ABeforehand, it looked like the race had
a lot of speed so I didn=t want to choke him up early. I
left him alone and we had the race won from two
[furlongs] out. It doesn=t happen often, but sometimes I

Baitha Alga registered a debut second in a six-furlong
maiden at Haydock May 23, but made amends after
enduring traffic problems at Chester next time May 31.
He became the first stakes winner for his freshman sire
(by Danehill Dancer {Ire}) when annexing the June 7
Listed Woodcote S. at Epsom June 7, and maintained
his status as the Rathasker Stud resident=s standardbearer by becoming his first pattern race winner here.
AHe=s having his third run in two weeks, which is quite
a bit, but this horse can handle it,@ commented trainer
Richard Hannon. AI saw Frankie [Dettori] sitting in
behind and when he pulled him out he never looked like
getting beaten. He=s a very smart 2-year-old and we
might have a look at the [G1] Prix Morny [at Deauville
July 30] after that.
An impressive Ascot winner like that is really nice.@
The Great War (War Front), sent off as the 5-6 chalk,
raced one spot behind the eventual winner and, despite
threatening inside the final quarter mile, could not carry
his effort through and faded late to finish fifth. Wesley
Ward trainee To Be Determined (Elusive Quality), the
sole distaffer in the field, got loose beforehand and was
never a factor after a sluggish exit and was eased in
the closing stages to finish last of nine.

the London Gold Cup, which has been used by
connections of the likes of Al Kazeem (GB) (Dubawi
{Ire}), he headed to post with infectious confidence
behind him as one of the day=s best-backed runners.
Settled towards the rear early by Ryan Moore, he had
two behind but was unable to move closer before the
approach to the home turn, with Obliterator (Ire)
(Oratorio {Ire}) laboring ahead. Eased wide at the top of
the straight, he enjoyed a clear run while some ran into
traffic down to his right and, once he had swooped on
the lead with just over a furlong remaining, was never
going to be reeled in. At the line, he had 1 1/2 lengths
to spare over Mutakayyef, with his trainer keen to look
to the future.
AI was a little bit concerned about the ground, as he
wouldn=t want it too quick at this stage,@ Stoute said.
AWe=ve always liked this horse--he=s a quality horse who
will go forward. He was a bit immature last year and
we only got one start into him, but he=s continued to
improve in his work. He=s got a turn of foot and he=s
got class, and I think he=ll get 1 1/2 miles. I would just
keep him off fast, summer ground, and I=m glad they
juiced it up a bit last night because it was necessary. I
think he could be a Group 1 horse in time.@ Ryan Moore
added, AHe=s done it nicely. He traveled smoothly,
quickened up well and when he got to the front for
some reason he wanted to duck right. It was just
greenness. He=s a nice progressive horse and has only
been beaten on his debut. This is his level for now, but
he=s open to any amount of improvement.@
Sheikh Hamdan=s representative Richard Hills was
pleased with the effort of the runner-up and
commented, AHe=s a long horse to organize and he was
a bit slowly away, so Paul [Hanagan] had to ask him.
He was a bit keen for three-quarters of a furlong, but
apart from that we are really pleased. Whatever he
does this year, he=ll be even better next year. He=s a
stayer who will definitely get 1 1/2 miles, but he just
needs to fill out first.@
Luca Cumani said of the third, Postponed, who was a
neck behind Mutakayyef after meeting trouble in
running, AHe ran well, handled the track and handled

breakthrough moment when winning the Listed Vincent
O=Brien Ruby S. at Killarney in August, Wannabe Better
doubled her tally in that sphere in the Listed Garnet S.
at Naas in October. Third in The Curragh=s G3 Gladness
S. Apr. 13 and May 5 G3 Athasi S., the bay was down
the field on a third visit there in the G3 Lanwades Stud
S. last time May 24. Breaking well, she was restrained
and ended up towards the back of the small field due to
the strong pace set by Brendan Brackan. Angled out in
the stretch, she kept finding to reel in that rival and
Eastern Rules with 50 yards remaining. AThey went
very quick and she was a bit crowded down the inner
and wasn=t enjoying it,@ winning rider Wayne Lordan

September. AShe=s all set to go and she=s in very good
form, so we are looking for her to bounce back to her
best,@ trainer Clive Brittain said. AShe couldn=t be in
better health and her work has been good. She was
working well before the Guineas and it surprised us
how she ran there. She=s won twice on fast ground at
Ascot on the straight track and has won going
right-handed at The Curragh, so we=re looking forward
to it.@ J “TDN Rising Star” J Tapestry, who was
third before being promoted to second behind Rizeena
in the Moyglare in September, was eased up when her
chance had gone in the Guineas. AWe are hoping to put
a line through Newmarket, as we had a couple of
reasons for what happened there,@ jockey Joseph
O=Brien said. AWe haven=t done much with her and have
freshened her up, and she seems to be working nicely
and is in good form.
She handled the track well at Newmarket and going
past the four I was going quite nicely, but she flattened
out very quickly. She=s back in great form, is fresh and
has put on plenty of weight. If she comes back to her
2-year-old form she should be there or thereabouts.@
Demoted in the Moyglare behind Tapestry was Qatar
Racing=s Kiyoshi (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who had
previously beaten Sandiva (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand
{GB}) by 3 1/4 lengths in the G3 Albany S. here and
who finished up her juvenile campaign with a third in
the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket in September.
One who warrants respect despite not holding obvious
form claims is Christopher Tsui=s highly regarded
G3 C L Weld Park S. scorer My Titania (Ire) (Sea the
Stars {Ire}), who was forced to miss both Guineas due
to training problems and the weather. AShe=s in good
shape, the boss is happy with her and she=s working
well, so we=re looking forward to it,@ jockey Declan
McDonogh commented. AShe has her ground, which is
a big plus, and we=ll find out where we stand. It=s a
step up in class for her. She=s won a Group 3 and now
we=re hoping she can match up against the best, but
you never really know until you try. It=s a big step

Classics, the son of the 2007 G2 Queen Mary S.

G2 Prix Hocquart over 11 furlongs at Longchamp May
11 with a clear-cut win dropping back a furlong in the
G3 Gallinule S. at The Curragh a fortnight later. Another

over this trip last time May 17, and he is held in high

It is here that I meet Samson and Trojan.
While Samson is an old hat at Royal Ascot, Trojan is
attending for the first time, and standing still is not
quite his thing. When the band strikes up with God
Save The Queen, his head reaches for the skies, while
the quivering, flared nostrils say it all. But, true to his
training and despite his eyes being on stalks, Trojan
stands his ground. It may, of course, have had
something to do with Samson, who, after lifting his
head once to check out the approaching Landaus, went
back to his daydreams.
The job is, however, far from done. For once Her
Majesty departs and the racing ends, revelers and
racegoers take to the High Street to continue the party
and, once again, it is the job of the Thames Valley
police and the likes of Trojan and Samson to ensure
that they do so in an orderly fashion. Finally, the streets
are quiet, Her Majesty is safely in back at Windsor
Castle, and the police, well, they are getting ready to

appears to have taken those races well. Ponfeigh has a
terrific turn of foot, and hopefully the step up in trip
won't catch him out. The race is worth a lot of money
and it is great to have a horse good enough to run in
it.@

Farm General Manager George Isaacs for $500,000 to
top Thursday=s third session of the OBS June TwoYear-Olds and Horses of Racing Age
Sale in Central Florida. It was the
second consecutive year that a
horse crossed the half-million dollar
barrier at the June sale following
the sale of Conquest Top Gun
(Pioneerof the Nile), who sold to
Conquest Stables LLC for $525,000
and has gone on to win this year=s
Marine S. at Woodbine.
The Mar. 20 foal is a daughter of

(Miswaki), whose

the GI Malibu S. to close out his 3-year-old season.
Greyciousness was offered with this foal in utero at the
2011 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Sale, but was
bought back on a bid of $300,000. Consigned to the
2013 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale by Woods Edge Farm,
the filly was RNA=d when bidding stalled out at
$285,000. Prepared for this sale by Eddie Woods,
agent, hip 756 covered a quarter mile in a fleet :21 1/5
during her under-tack preview.
AShe arguably had one of the top videos of the sale
and she made it into the small group of horses we=d
consider,@ Isaacs commented. AI keyed on her, because
she=s one I wanted to take home. She=s not a shortterm play, we=re going to take her to the races and then
she=ll join our broodmare band.@
Isaacs has long been general manager of Bridlewood
and remained in the farm=s employ when it was sold to
billionaire John Malone in 2013. Malone is the chairman
of the Englewood, Colorado-based Liberty Media Co.,
owns roughly 2.1 million acres of land and has a net
worth in excess of $6 billion. He purchased Bridlewood
from the family of Arthur Appleton, who passed away
in 2008 at the age of 92.

racing stable with a strong emphasis on fillies. She fit
all the criteria we were looking for--strong physical,
strong pedigree and strong performanceBand it looks
like she has all the ingredients to be successful.@
He continued, AShe had a lot of quality for an Indian
Charlie, and obviously they=re not making them
anymore. He=s a very established broodmare sire and in
the end, that was one of the reasons we were drawn to
her. She was especially beautiful for an Indian Charlie
because they can be coarse sometimes, but it looks like
she=ll withstand the rigors of training.@
Isaacs indicated that their new purchase would return
to Bridlewood before being sent to a yet-to-be
determined trainer.

2008. The operation consigned the Jan. 30 foal via
Craig and Holly Bandoroff=s Denali Stud to last year=s
Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, where she fetched
$170,000 from Sarazen & Talus Stable. She was
consigned to the June sale by Niall Brennan Stables,
agent. She hails from the female family of stakes
winner Indianapolis, also by Medaglia d=Oro.
On the session, a total of 196 horses changed hands
for gross receipts of $6,545,900, good for an average
of $33,397 and a median price of $17,000. As there
were only two days of bidding at the 2013 June sale,

TRF CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Nearly 100 supporters of the Thoroughbred
Retirement Foundation (TRF), including dignitaries from
New York State, gathered at the TRF=s horse farm on
the grounds of the Wallkill Correctional Facility
June 19. The event marked the 30th anniversary of the
TRF=s Second Chances program--a rehabilitation
initiative designed to teach inmates equine management
while rescuing racehorses. The TRF=s founding board of
directors established the program out of personal
concern for the well-being of retired Thoroughbreds.
One TRF board member, former state Senator Howard
Nolan Jr., conceived the idea to restore the farm at
Wallkill and put inmates to work caring for horses. The
program, now called ASecond Chances,@ in partnership
with the state Department of Corrections and
Community Supervision (DOCCS), has proven to be an
unequivocal success. Currently, the program has
expanded to nine other states.
Farm manager and vocational instructor Jim
Tremper, who has been there since day one, received a
plaque presented by Tom Donahue, Executive Board
Member of the NYS Public Employees Federation.
AThe most remarkable thing I have witnessed during
the last 30 years is the difference it makes in the
inmates who work at the farm, especially those with a
history of violent behavior. It is incredible to see how
working with horses changes the attitudes and
behaviors of these men.@

Elite Army powered home in a one-mile Kempton
maiden on racecourse bow Nov. 11, but could manage
only third in a Sandown handicap over 10 furlongs on
sophomore return Apr. 25. He looked more like an
Ascot contender with a ready score in a similar event
back at the Esher track last time May 22, and raced
keenly behind the leaders when dropped in from his
wide berth here. Looking for room on the fence as the
field straightened for home, the bay found daylight with
1 1/2 furlongs to race and stayed on strongly to collar
fellow joint-favorite Windshear 75 yards from the line.
ARiding a winner here is better than ever, but that was a
tough one,@ opined Kieren Fallon. AI was locked up with
nowhere to go--I had the perfect position, but it just
didn=t open up for us. He got stopped coming up the hill
and having to accelerate from there shows how good
he is. He=s a good horse with a big future. This is about
his trip. He travels well and he=ll keep improving.
[Trainer] Saeed [bin Suroor] has done a good job with
him because he=s a big baby.@ The winning conditioner
added, AHe won at Sandown on softer ground last time,
but was a little keen early, as he was today. Kieren
looked after him and 1 1/2 miles has improved him. He
was struggling at halfway, but he=s shown a good turn
of foot and finished his race well. You just need to keep
him interested in the race, and we=re now looking for
group races. It=s a very tough meeting, and if you win
one race, you=ve done your job.@

2007, was appointed New South Wales Bloodstock
