FEATURE PRESENTATION • GIII COOLMORE LEXINGTON S.
IN WITH A SHOT
Although unlikely to produce a starter for this year=s
GI Kentucky Derby, today=s GIII Coolmore Lexington S.
has still attracted a pretty solid field. Bourbon Lane
Stable=s Johannesbourbon
(Johannesburg), a dazzling 9 3/4length debut winner going 6 1/2
furlongs at Turfway Park Mar. 25
(video), dives right into the deep end.
AHe ran a big Sheets number in his first
Castaway
race,@ trainer Kellyn Gorder said. AI
Coady Photography know it was Turfway and we really
didn=t know what he beat.@ The runnerup that day Potomac River (English Channel) stamped
himself as one to watch with an impressive maiden
victory over the Keeneland lawn earlier this week. AThat
validated the race a little bit,@ Gorder commented. AMike
McMahon and Jamie Hill had an idea of what they had.
They thought they would have a shot at going into the
Lexington if he ran as well as they thought he would.@
Gorder also trains the unbeaten J “TDN Rising
Star” J Bourbon Courage (Lion Heart) on behalf of
McMahon and Hill=s operation. Unbeaten Summer Front
(War Front) makes his much- anticapted sophomore
debut here. The Waterford Stable colorbearer won his
first three starts on grass, including the $100,000 Dania
Beach S. at Gulfstream Park Dec. 18. AHe is a very
exciting prospect,@ trainer Christophe Clement told Daily
Racing Form. AHe has been impressive in every single
race. He has been training brilliantly at Payson Park the
last couple of months.@
UNION RAGS WORKS AT KEENELAND
Chadds Ford Stable=s Union Rags (Dixie Union)
continued to tune up for the GI
Kentucky Derby with a fourfurlong move in :47.40 at
Keeneland Friday. Under
regular exercise rider Peter
Brette, the GII Fasig-Tipton
Fountain of Youth S. hero
posted fractions of :12, :24
and :35.80, and was out five
furlongs in 1:00 (video). His
Union Rags
Coady Photography
previous four-furlong workout
took
place at Palm Meadows Apr.
12. AI thought he went well,@
trainer Michael Matz said. AIt
was nothing spectacular, but
he did it nice and galloped out
fine. He was doing a
two-minute lick before he got
to the half-mile pole. It was a
good work and we will ask
Union Rags
more of him in his next work.@
Coady Photography
The handsome bay heads to
the big one following a troubled third in the GI Florida
Derby Mar. 31. Matz added that Union Rags would
likely ship to Louisville in the middle of next week.

GIII Sunland Derby Mar. 25, currently boasts $162,000

BAFFERT SENDS PAIR FOR JEROME
Trainer Bob Baffert, who shipped in During (Cherokee
Run) and Teton Forest (Forestry) to win back-to-back
renewals of the GII Jerome H. when it was contested in
the fall at Belmont Park in 2003 and 2004, has two live
chances in today=s onemile test over the
Aqueduct main track.
Stirred Up (Lemon Drop
Kid) is favored at 2B1 on
Eric Donovan=s morning
line. Favored when a
distant third behind
stablemate and J “TDN
The Lumber Guy
Rising Star” J
Adam Coglianese
Bodemeister (Empire
Maker) going a mile for
the first time at Santa Anita Feb. 11, he held off a late
run from Holy Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) to graduate
Mar. 13 at the Arcadia oval. The $420,000 KEESEP
purchase gave a solid account of himself in his stakes
debut last time out, finishing a clear third behind Daddy
Nose Best (Scat Daddy) in the GIII Sunland Derby
Mar. 25. Baffert=s second string is Brigand (Flatter), the
$925,000 topper out of the 2011 OBS March sale who
has been something of a disappointment for owner
Kaleem Shah and remains eligible for a first-level
allowance. The Lumber Guy (Grand Slam) cuts back to
the one-turn mile off a pacesetting fifth in the GI Wood
Memorial S. Apr. 7 and should be gunning for it from
the inside post, but will have plenty of company up
front. AIt=s back quicker than I=d like, but I=m anxious to
run him in a one-turn mile,@ trainer Michael Hushion
said. AI think that=s the key, a one-turn mile. A rider can
just come out there real quietly, wherever he wants to
take him, and make them sort it out for a half mile
down the backside.@

A GRIMM TALE
Britain=s nasty weather and the prevalent soft ground
at Newbury has already put paid to the chance of seeing
Top Offer (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Tales of Grimm
(Distorted Humor) in today=s G3 Greenham S., but one
who is not be dodging the testing footing is Michael
Pescod=s Bronterre (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Successful
on good-to-soft in the Listed Stardom S. in September,
he was a place ahead of Thursday=s impressive
G3 Craven S. winner Trumpet Major (Ire) (Arakan) when
fourth in a renewal of Newmarket=s G1 Dewhurst S.
that is working out well when last seen in October.
ABronterre looked to love the rain-softened ground when
he won by five lengths at Goodwood last September, so
he should be in his element in the conditions,@
commented Richard Hannon, who has won three of the
last five renewals. AHe was only beaten a length in the
Dewhurst, finishing just behind Trumpet Major, who did
the form no harm in the Craven, so we have to be
hopeful. Bronterre worked well with Trumpet Major
when they went to Newbury for an away day recently
and he seems in very good form.@ Caspar Netscher (GB)
(Dutch Art {GB}) has already proven his liking for this
track when successful in the G2 Mill Reef S. over six
furlongs in September, but has stamina to prove after a
last-out eighth in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf
over a mile at Churchill Downs. Andrew Balding puts
forward Thurloe Thoroughbreds= Spiritual Star (GB)
(Soviet Star), who tempted connections into a
supplementary entry for the Dewhurst with a six-length
success in a seven-furlong maiden at Newmarket in
September. Despite coming up short on the big
occasion when seventh, he was only beaten just over
four lengths, and that race=s also-rans Trumpet Major,
Red Duke (Hard Spun) and Ektihaam (Ire) (Invincible
Spirit {Ire}) have all boosted the form this year. AI=m
very happy with him and I think he=s improved a lot
since last year--he=s a fine-looking, strong 3-year-old
type,@ Balding said yesterday. AHe=s a high-quality horse
at home and the question mark is the ground, but it=s
the same for all of them, and if he goes on it he=ll go
very well. He was too free in the Dewhurst and
probably, in hindsight, it came too soon after his maiden
win. He has a very bright future, and this might not be
the best guide, as it will be run on soft ground, but I
hope he handles it.@

UNFAVORABLE TERMS?
Robert Barnett=s Best Terms (GB) (Exceed and Excel
{Aus}) is not a certain starter for today=s G3 Fred
Darling S. at Newbury, with the soft ground causing
connections some anxiety. Having coped with
good-to-soft when winning the G2 Lowther S. at York in
August, the diminutive homebred is not built for deep
conditions, especially as this trip is an unknown. AWill
Edmeades, racing manager to the Barnetts who own
Best Terms, has always been for going straight for the
Guineas, so if we are not happy with the ground we will
wait for Newmarket," trainer Richard Hannon said of the
homebred, who was a latest fifth in the G1 Cheveley
Park S. at Newmarket in September. ABest Terms has
not grown since last year, but she has been working
very well up at Everleigh and she is fit enough. We think
that she will stay the seven [furlongs] and she switches
off at home, which is encouraging, but we won=t know
about the mile until we get to Newmarket.@ Mick
Channon has done well with his 3-year-old fillies so far
this term and Fillionaire (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) is held in
high regard at West Ilsley. Last seen finishing third in
the Listed Radley S. over this track and trip in October,
she is owned by Ann Black who is also a partner in the
recent Kempton conditions scorer Laugh Out Loud (GB)
(Clodovil {Ire}).

Top Offer Misses Greenham...
J “TDN Rising Star” J Top Offer (GB) (Dansili
{GB}) was yesterday ruled out of the G3 Greenham S.
by trainer Roger Charlton due to softening conditions at
Newbury. Khalid Abdullah=s homebred will head straight
to the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket May 5
without a prep run. AI=ve decided not to run, because it=s
too close to the Guineas to have what could be a very
tough race,@ his conditioner said. ABy tomorrow, the
ground could be holding and there is a very strong
headwind so I would rather give him a preparation
according to what I think he needs. I=ll bring him here
tomorrow to walk him around the paddock and then
we=ll work him at home and if his work is good and the
owner is happy, I=d like to run in the 2000 Guineas. He
needs a couple of pieces of work and then he=ll be
there. He=s a nice, good-looking horse who moves well
and would be inconvenienced by soft ground. He=s got
to lift his game to run well in a Guineas, but I think he=s
a definite group horse.@
Fencing Confirmed for Guineas Test...
Trainer John Gosden yesterday announced that
Fencing (Street Cry {Ire}) will run in the 2000 Guineas
at Newmarket. Due to prep in today=s G3 Greenham S.
at Newbury, George Strawbridge=s G1 Racing Post
Trophy third-place finisher suffered a late setback and
will head straight to the May 5 Newmarket Classic. AHe
did a very nice piece of work, but a shoe came back and
the clip went into his foot,@ his conditioner told PA
Sport. AHe=s fit, but you can=t run him and I didn=t
declare him for the Greenham. He=ll be back and can go
straight for the Guineas, as there=s nothing else left
after the Greenham.@
GIII DOUBLEDOGDARE S. Pachattack (Pulpit) posts a
hard-fought victory.
RACETRACK ROUND-UP
Strategic >Marketing=...
Glen Hill Farm=s Marketing Mix (Medaglia d=Oro) is
being pointed toward the GII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile
on the Kentucky Derby undercard.
The 2011 GII Mrs. Revere S. and GIII
Pucker Up S. heroine returned the
races with a smart win over
Inglorious (Hennessy) and Hungry
Island (More Than Ready) in a salty
Keeneland allowance Apr. 11. AIt was
a little tougher than anyone wanted,@
trainer Tom Proctor revealed. AShe
ran great. I thought she would run a
Marketing Mix
big race because she was training
Reed Palmer
great at Tampa.@ Proctor continued,
AI=m hoping the race [at Keeneland] didn=t take too much
out of her. I think she=s ready to rock and roll.@
No Rush with >Rain=...
Connections of Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer
{Ire}) are taking it steady with the G1 English and
German Oaks and G2 British Champions Fillies= and
Mares= S. winner as she recovers from an operation to
remove chips from a joint. Last seen finishing with only
two behind in Kyoto=s G1 Queen Elizabeth II
Commemorative Cup in November, the Martin Taylorowned 4-year-old will be brought back with a lateseason campaign in mind. AWe found some chips in her
joint after she came back from Japan,@ trainer William
Haggas=s wife Maureen explained. AShe=s at home
recuperating now and, as rehabilitation for these sort of
injuries is very important, there is no hurry with the
races in the autumn and winter in mind.@
Igugu to Enter Quarantine for Dubai...
Trainer Mike de Kock revealed yesterday that reigning
South African Horse of the Year Igugu (Aus) (Galileo
{Ire}) will be among those entering quarantine May 6 in
order to compete in next year=s Dubai Carnival. Due to
protocol designed to control African Horse Sickness,
Igugu, along with recent Sheikh Hamdan acquisition The
Apache (SAf) (Mogok) and a number of other de Kock
runners, will spend 19 days at the Kenilworth
Quarantine Station, then 90 days in Mauritius and
another month in the U.K. The Apache, a multiple Group
1 winner last year, will be sent to Hong Kong, rather
than Dubai like the rest of his stablemates. AFor Igugu
and others to be able to compete internationally at the
end of the year and next year in Dubai we have no
choice but to make early arrangements to get them out
of the country as soon as we can, which is about now,@
de Kock explained. AIt=s really ridiculous, but we cannot
take the chance of waiting until after the [Durban] July,
for example. We=re following the export protocol as it
stands right now.@

HUGHES APPEAL DISMISSED
Richard Hughes yesterday learned that his appeal
against the decision of the British Horseracing Authority
to uphold a lengthy ban handed out in India has failed.
Despite attempts to lessen the 50-day suspension
handed out in February for not following the instructions
of the trainer of one of his mounts, the high-profile rider
will have to wait until Apr. 29 to resume duties. Jamie
Stier, Director of Raceday Operations and Regulation for
the BHA, said in a statement, AThe BHA stands behind
the principle of reciprocity of penalties among
recognised international racing bodies. Without
reciprocity there is a risk of there being no effective
measures to deter visiting participants from breaching
the rules of the respective authority. However, we will
be looking to see if there are any lessons to learn which
may assist the handling of such matters in the future.@

On Lasix, practice what you preach
“If they really believe that furosemide is bad for horses and racing, why
don’t they just stop racing their horses on it? By failing to do so, the small

use of furosemide come off as being opportunistic at best and
hypocritical at worst.” Steve Crist, Daily Racing Form

BRUNETTI CHALLENGE TO MONMOUTH
LEASE DISMISSED A complaint filed by John
Brunetti, owner of Hialeah Park, seeking to re-open the
bidding process on the lease to operate New Jersey=s
Monmouth Park has been dismissed. The Board of
Commissioners of the New Jersey Sports and
Exposition Authority received a 37-page document
Thursday afternoon from its hearing officer Mark
Stefanacci saying that Brunetti=s challenge was without
merit, upholding the decision to give control of the track
to the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen=s
Association. The organization was granted the right to
lease Monmouth Mar. 1, but soon afterwards, Brunetti,
who operates Red Oak Stable with a string at
Monmouth, challenged the decision, suggesting that the
terms of that lease were dramatically different than
those he had been offered in an initial request for
proposals. On Monday, Brunetti also argued before the
board that political contributions made by the NJTHA, a
not-for-profit organization, precluded them from being
awarded the lease under the state of New Jersey=s payto-play restrictions. The NJTHA argued that, as a notfor-profit, is was not bound by the same rules as a
business entity. Brunetti also acknowledged campaign
contributions of his own. The NJSEA board met behind
closed doors Thursday and accepted Stefanacci=s
recommendations at that time, but did not disclose their
action until New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gave his
approval. The governor signed off on the minutes Friday
afternoon. Through his attorneys, Brunetti indicated that
he might appeal the decision if the agreement was not
overturned, but it was not clear Friday what other legal
remedies he might seek, if any. Monmouth Park is
scheduled to a 71-day meeting Saturday, May 12.

Ocala Farm Ministry Community Center Set to Open:
After eight years of hard work and fundraising, the
Ocala Farm Ministry's Community Center is open and
ready to serve local workers and their families with a
variety of services and programs, including after-school
tutoring, English classes, pre-school enrichment
programs, bible studies, non-denominational church
services and dental and immunization clinics. Their
soccer program, which enrolled 147 children this past
season, will continue to grow and thrive with access to
the enhanced facility. "Eight years ago the board
decided it would be nice to have a community center for
many reasons but mainly that we would be better able
to serve the horse farm workers and families,@ the
organization=s Stephanie Brennan explained. AChaplain
Bob [Miller] usually drives from farm to farm, as we do
not have a central spot. We spent a year looking for
land that would serve our purposes, that we could
afford and that was properly zoned. We finally found
the perfect location and the plans began. Of course
shortly after this the market collapsed and we had to
regroup and restructure our tastes. Slowly we started
the process, thanks to a very dedicated volunteer Vicky
Donnan who took on this project and spent countless
hours meeting with engineers, contractors and city
planners it was completed. In addition to our community
center,we have a soccer field [funded by the Florida
Farm Managers], and a state-of-the-art playground
[donated by Winding Oaks Farm] on the property.@ For

Blingo made a stylish move to capture his career
opener on the Hollywood weeds Nov. 25. Switched to
the Cushion Track for the GI CashCall Futurity Dec. 17,
the big bay closed to be sixth, beaten 2 3/4 lengths.
However, his Triple Crown aspirations came to an end
when he was a well-beaten sixth in the GII San Felipe S.
on the dirt Mar. 10. Returning to the infield, Blingo was
bet down to 3-5, and lived up to the billing. Unhurried
early, the sophomore settled in third on the inside
before shifting out to make his run. He was confidently
handled by Mike Smith as he forged to the front in the
center of the course, while Vibrato Jazz put in a bold
run late. Buffalo Billy, who hung a left at the break, got
it together to be third. Click for the brisnet.com chart or

BLU JON (h, 5, Awesome Again--Alpha Mama, by
Unbridled's Song), a half-brother to Alpha Kitten (Tale of
the Cat), GSW, $227,010, finished second in a hillside
test in his belated career opener Jan. 15. The homebred
came back to miss by 3/4 of a length to Stormberg
(Storm Cat) in a similar contest, and was bet down to
even-money while trying the dirt for the first time here.
The rangy grey broke a bit tardily and was well behind
early in the four-horse field. He got into gear down the
backstretch, was in striking position for home and
wound up winning as he pleased. It was 4 1/4 lengths
back to pacesetter Anabaa Premium (Anabaa). Sales

Hollywood to Conduct 2YO Turf Maidens:
With newly created turf stakes on the agenda later
this summer and fall at Del Mar and Santa Anita, Betfair
Hollywood Park Racing Secretary Martin Panza has
announced that he will write a handful of maiden
allowance races sprinting on the turf for 2-year-olds.
ABetfair Hollywood Park is happy to help with the
development of this new juvenile turf stakes series in
California,== said Panza. AWith the Breeders= Cup having
added turf races for 2-year-olds, it is important for
California to offer a turf stakes series for those horses.
We hope to aid in the development of the series and
provide our horsemen with grass opportunities for their
juveniles.== Del Mar will play host to the $100,000 Oak
Tree Juvenile Fillies Sept. 3 and the $100,000 Oak Tree
Juvenile Sept. 5, while Santa Anita will also card a pair
of $100,000 events as preps for the Breeders= Cup, to
be held at the Arcadia oval this November.

Successful in the 2010 Listed Cecil Frail S. at
Haydock, Beyond Desire earned prize money in four
pattern-race starts last term and closed 2011 with an
unplaced effort in the Oct. 2 G1 Prix de l=Abbaye at
Longchamp. Sent straight to the front after a slick exit
in this seasonal bow, she poached a decisive advantage
on her rivals entering the final eighth and came under a
drive to hold the late thrust of Caledonia Lady for a
second black-type score. AShe has held her form quite
well since she was a 2-year-old, but fluffed her lines in
the Abbaye when trying to anticipate the start and
rearing up in the stalls,@ explained rider Neil Callan. AThe
team has done a great job keeping her relaxed--she
winged the gate today and won well. She=ll probably
step back into group company now, but that=s a
decision for [trainer] Roger [Varian].@ Video, courtesy

EKTIHAAM (IRE) (c, 3, Invincible Spirit {Ire}--Liscune
{Ire}, by King=s Best) earned J “TDN Rising Star” J
status at Doncaster in September, but finished last of
nine in the Oct. 8 G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket in his
juvenile campaign closer. Positioned at the back of the
four runners for most of this return, the 11-4 chance
eased ever closer in the long straight and asserted under
coaxing inside the final quarter mile to comfortably best
Wrothem Heath (GB) (Dansili {GB}) by five lengths. AWe
never lost faith in the horse, and he wintered very well,@
commented Roger Varian. AWhen you come back after a
bad race, be it two weeks or several months, you really
need to do it on the track to justify that faith. In
hindsight, the Dewhurst was probably the wrong race to
run in, as he was a bit babyish and the ground was
quick. Also, he might not have handled the track and he
didn=t get much luck in running. Everything that could
go wrong went wrong, and it was not the best way to
end the year. I=m delighted with this comeback and he=s
put himself back in the picture. He=s got an entry in the

leader Ensejaam (Dynaformer) under hand riding with a
furlong remaining, the homebred drew away to record
an impressive eight-length success, with a further five
back to Love Tatoo (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) in third.
The winner is a half-sister to Enticing (Ire) (Pivotal
{GB}), MGSW-Eng, $260,639. AShe is quite sharp and
we didn=t think she would stay, but Johnny [Murtagh]
got her well settled and she came home well,@ trainer
William Haggas=s wife Maureen commented. AShe might
be a proper seven-furlong filly, but I don=t think she=ll get
a mile. Her mother loved this ground and she is a strong
filly--she looked useful there and it would be great to
have a nice filly for Lael Stable. We=ll see how she is

strongly under final-furlong urging to safely hold Red
Hand (Mr. Greeley) by a half-length. AI told James
