The Fasig-Tipton October Fall Yearlings Sale begins
its three-day run at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington
today, with bidding on the first of 1,236 catalogued
lots scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The October sale,
which has been growing in
stature over the last several
years, enjoyed a record-setting
renewal in 2013. With 818
yearlings grossing
$27,908,000, the sale average
was $34,117 and the median
was $17,000--both records for
the auction. The sale-topping
price of $800,000 was the
highest at the sale since 1999.

Browning, Jr. admitted those
figures would be tough to
beat, but he said interest and expectations are high
ahead of this year=s sale. AYou don=t ever want to set
yourself up to say that you have to match those levels
to have a successful sale, but we would hope to be in
that same general range,@ Browning said. AYou always hope
for improvement. Is that realistic or not? I don=t know.
We=ve got a lot of nice horses that people are bringing
to the sale. And there seems to be a very, very high
level of interest. The statistics will speak for themselves
at the end of the day. We hope we have a strong
marketplace and get the vast majority of horses sold
and we know that the competition will be there for the

HILLSTAR BRIGHTEST IN INTERNATIONAL
Sir Evelyn de Rothschild=s Hillstar (GB) (Danehill
Dancer {Ire}) inherited the favorite=s role in Sunday=s
GI Pattison Canadian International when Brown Panther
(GB) (Shirocco {Ger}) was scratched after getting loose
in the warm-up, and the bay colt duly delivered a
powerful late-running victory in the 1 1/2-mile contest
at Woodbine. AI moved a bit too early today, but he
was the best horse and we kept it straightforward
again,@ commented winning rider Ryan Moore, who
captured the 2013 International aboard Joshua Tree
(Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). AHe was fine and plenty and it was
going to take a good horse to get by him. Like Brown
Panther, Hillstar was the best horse in the race and just

Hillstar settled just behind the early pace as
Reporting Star (Circular Quay) and The Pizza Man
(English Channel) took turns on the lead through an
opening quarter in :25.31. Reporting Star had a clear
advantage through a half in :50.34, but The Pizza Man
reeled in that longshot turning for home as Hillstar was
winding up for his rally while some four lengths back
after a mile in 1:40.10. The Pizza Man was in front
with a quarter mile to go, but his advantage was shortlived as Hillstar came bounding to the lead from the
center of the

the post parade and he got loose shortly thereafter,
bolting past the starting gate and taking off around the
course. Jockey Richard Kingscote, his feet out of the
stirrups, was unable to control him and was eventually
dropped on the backside by Brown Panther, who then
continued his journey alone around the turf course
before finally being corralled by the outrider.
AJust before the break, the horse got wound up and
unfortunately he got me off,@ Kingscote said. AWhen I
got back on, I tried to keep him relaxed and as soon as
I let go, he bolted. There wasn=t much I could do after
that. He=s never done that before. He sometimes
dances about and gets on his toes, but he=s never been
that extreme.@
Joel Rosario, aboard the late-running Big Blue Kitten,
was not disappointed by the effort of the runner-up. AI
had a good trip,@ Rosario said. AIt took him a long time
to get into the race, but he ran well. I thought the horse
that won the race was the best horse today, and I=m
glad we got second.@
Hillstar, bred by his owner=s Southcourt Stud, won
last year=s G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot and
was third behind Novellist (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) in the
G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. He began
2014 with a 14th-place effort in the Mar. 29 G1 Dubai
World Cup and reeled off four straight runner-up efforts
in group company before winning the Sept. 20
G3 Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial Legacy Cup at Newbury

Judge Gets Taylor Decision (cont. from p1)
Just the Judge, the 8-5 favorite, was unhurried early
after a slow start and settled near the back of the pack
as Wall of Sound (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) led the field
through moderate splits. Steadied slightly behind foes
as the field began to tighten up leaving the backstretch,
the dark bay filly weaved between rivals turning for
home. Desperate for a seam to run through in upper
stretch, she bullied her way into clear running room and
closed determinedly before holding off Odeliz late.
AObviously the race was very unsatisfactory because
I had to go to >Plan B= from the start because she kind
of jumped awkwardly from the gate,@ said winning rider
Jamie Spencer. AYou can=t panic then, you have to take
a different route. I was in amongst horses from
probably five out to about the three-eighths pole and it
was very, very tight where I was. Then she had to
make a little bit of room for herself early in the stretch.@
Spencer admitted he was also thinking about Just the
Judge=s next expected start in the Nov. 1 GI Breeders=
Cup F/M Turf as his charge battled down the stretch. AI
was trying to not give her too hard of a race because,
obviously, this is basically a stepping stone to the
Breeders= Cup. So the plan was just to win here and
ship on down. She=s won, but I=d prefer if it had gone a
little bit smoother.@

Dylan Mouth, who suffered his lone defeat when
eighth in the G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot
June 20 but rebounded to win the G2 Federico Tesio S.
by three lengths Sept. 21, stretched his unbeaten string

In the last 10 editions of this event, just two 3-yearolds have emerged victorious--Shirocco (Ger), who
landed the GI Breeders' Cup Turf at four, and Novellist
(Ger), who recorded a Group 1 hat-trick the following
year, topped by his triumph in the G1 King George VI
and Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot. The last Italian
Derby winner to win this was Ruysdael (GB) in 1967.
Dylan Mouth hit the front 800 meters from home when
his pacemaker, Wild Wolf (Ire) (Rail Link {GB}) got tired,
and stayed on gamely when challenged by the
mud-lover Duca Di Mantova. "You need a very good 3year-old to win in these conditions, and Dylan Mouth is
very good" said jockey Fabio Branca.

Tsuruoka attended the race and extended Dylan Mouth
an invitation to the G1 Japan Cup. "It's a big honor to
run in a big race like the Japan Cup,@ said trainer

Caspar Netscher was looking for his first victory since
returning to the racetrack after proving subfertile at
stud in 2013. The bay won the 2012 G2 MehlMulhens-Rennen and G3 Greenham S. and was retired
to Morristown Lattin Stud in Kildare off a fourth-place
effort in that year=s G1 Prix du Moulin. After failing at
stud, he was bought back by owner Charles Wentworth
and he returned to the track to be a narrowly beaten
runner-up in the G2 Lennox S. in July of 2013. Cont. p7

Caspar Netscher had made four previous starts this
term, with his best finish a fifth in the G3 John Guest
Bengough S. last time out. Caspar Netscher settled into
midpack as Black Hornet was loose on the lead. Black
Hornet was still in front by open lengths in upper
stretch and Caspar Netscher had plenty to do while
back in sixth, but the pacesetter began to tire with
three-sixteenths left to run and Caspar Netscher, who
was angled to the inside for running room found a seam
between foes and surged to the lead in the shadow of
the wire. AMy hands were absolutely dripping sweat
and I actually felt physically sick before the race I was
so nervous,@ Wentworth admitted. AIt was a long way
to come and it=s a relief to have him back. I sold him to
stud at the end of his 3-year-old season and he covered
54 mares and only got three in foal. So the insurers
paid out the infertility insurance and I bought him back
in a sale bid, which was a gamble but it=s paid off.@ Of
his runner=s first win in more than two years,
Wentworth said. AThat was amazing. That was
reminiscent of how he was at his best as a 2-year-old.
It=s great to have him back. It really is.@ The winner will
be represented by two foals at the upcoming Goffs
November sale. His dam Bella Cantata, also bred by
Meon Valley Stud, sold for 22,000gns at the 2010
Tattersalls July sale while in foal to Manduro (Ger).

Already successful a record seven times in this
end-of-term contest, Andre Fabre extended his record
with Manatee as that unexposed 3-year-old denied
Norse King back-to-back renewals. Restricted to three
starts so far, the homebred was not seen for five
months following his debut success over 12 furlongs at
Chantilly Apr. 26, but built on a return second at
Chateaubriant Sept. 5 to record an impressive 4 1/2length success in a 15-furlong conditions event at
Maisons-Laffitte last time Sept. 29. In front from the
break, the dark bay was quickly handed a lead from last
year=s winner and battled to close the gap in the
straight. Eventually managing to subdue the long-time
leader with 50 meters remaining, he was pushed out
for an ultimately decisive score. AWe were absolutely
delighted with Manatee=s performance today,@ Lisa-Jane
Graffard of Godolphin commented. AHe is a very
late-maturing horse and is now really coming into his
own. Regardless of what he did this year, we have
always been looking at next year for him. Andre Fabre
has been very patient with the horse. He is very
straightforward and easy to place in his races. He has

Making all on his racecourse bow over a mile here at
the start of September, Epicuris was again dominant
from the front to justify favoritism in this first major
test. Happy on an uncontested lead under Thierry
Thulliez, the imposing homebred started to stretch his
rivals at the top of the straight and only the
conservatively ridden Big Blue was able to give
meaningful pursuit. Kicking clear inside the final
furlong, he was comfortably clear of that Godolphin
representative to book a ticket to the Nov. 8
G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. AHe is a nice colt with a
lovely action and my instructions were to go to the
front, as he has a huge stride and relaxes very well,@
trainer Criquette Head-Maarek commented. AHe has a
tendency to be keen between horses too. We will enter
him in the [G1] Criterium de Saint-Cloud and I will
discuss it with his owner and Lord Grimthorpe, but if all
is well we might take our chance.@ Epicuris might face a
rematch with the runner-up there, according to
Godolphin=s Lisa-Jane Graffard. ABig Blue has run very
well today and come up against what looks to be a
good horse in the winner,@ she said. AHe remains open
to improvement. No decision has been made about
whether he will run again this year, but the Criterium de

Native Bombshell, a maiden winner at Gulfstream for
trainer Tony Dutrow last February, added an Aqueduct
allowance in her first outing for Chad Brown last April.
Ninth in the Riskaverse S. at Saratoga in August, she
won her synthetics debut in the Ruling Angel S., but
had not been seen since that effort at Woodbine in
October of 2013. Native Bombshell settled into
midpack while racing along the rail as Cryptic Message
took the field through fractions of :22.00 and :44.41.
Behind a wall of horses turning for home, Native
Bombshell was tipped out for running room in upper
stretch and quickened late to narrowly outfinish favored
Disco Barbie in the final strides. Native Bombshell=s dam
Flat Screen sold for $2,000 at the 2011 Keeneland
January sale. She produced a colt by Awesome Again
this spring.

Fontanelice put her unbeaten record on the line in this
Italian championship event for juvenile fillies, and
despite some concerns about her stamina, emerged
with her reputation intact. The bay was a nine-length
debut winner over this surface May 1, and after adding
the Listed Alessandro Perrone a month later, deadheated for the win in the G3 Premio Passi June 29.
Fontanelice jumped quickly here and was allowed to set
a slow pace. She was challenged in the stretch by the
German raider, Marabea, but responded with courage

maiden win at the Capannelle Mar. 28 and improved

Veteran French stakes performer Spoil The Fun had
not visited the winner=s circle since collecting his first
black-type victory in the Montretoute S. at Longchamp
last May, and that losing streak included two off-theboard efforts in Dubai earlier this year. Third in
allowance company to kick off his European campaign
Apr. 11, he was beaten just a head when second in
Chantilly=s G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil Longines June 15,
and was third in Vichy=s Listed Prix Jacques de
Bremond July 25 prior to filling the runner-up spot
again in the G3 Prix Quincey Lucien Barriere at Deauville
Aug. 31. He relished yesterday's conditions and kicked
for home with ease. Trainer Christophe Ferland said,
"We can say, mission accomplished. Our target was to
win a group race with him, and he did it. Now he will

AShe broke well and was able to sit in an ideal
position taking an economic route,@ said winning jockey
Suguru Hamanaka. AWe all had high hopes for her from
the beginning, and I could feel her strength during
recent workouts. I saw Nuovo Record coming from the
outside, and just prayed that we could hold her off.@

KEESEP yearling, Beholder was last seen winning the
GI Zenyatta S. at Santa Anita Sept. 27. The Kentuckybred worked seven furlongs in Arcadia Saturday in a
sharp 1:23.80.
AAs disappointed and sad as we are about the fact
that we aren=t going to get to run, we can=t have any
negative feelings about Beholder because she=s been so
good to us,@ said Mandella.
The two-time champion is catalogued to sell at the
Nov. 3 Fasig-Tipton November Sale.
AThe sale is certainly still the plan, but we will
obviously have to see how things play out over the
next week,@ Toffey said. AWhen you look at her career,
we certainly can't be too disappointed. She's given us a
lot of great moments and memories. Right now we are
just going to take care of her and go from there."
It would have been the third appearance in a
Breeders= Cup race for the 4-year-old filly, who won the
2012 GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies before adding

the GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita
Nov. 1. The Wes Welker-owned chestnut breezed in
company with To My Valentine (Fr) (Dyhim Diamond
{Ire}), who is being pointed toward the GIII Senator Ken
Maddy S. the same day for trainer Wesley Ward.
Undrafted is one of seven horses Ward is considering
for the Breeders= Cup stabled at Keeneland. AMy Friday

The next start for Taris is unclear, but Beattie has a
few ideas.

what=s out there, but there are not a lot of obvious

LEADING LIGHT INJURED IN CUP DEFEAT
CIRRUS HONG KONG BOUND

Tabor=s Leading Light (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), seventh of
nine as the favorite in Saturday=s G2 QIPCO British
Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot, is unlikely to
race again after suffering suspensory injuries in running.
Leading Light, who was returning to the scene of his
G1 Gold Cup victory at
Royal Ascot in June, was

horses hampered in the
early straight by eventual
winner Forgotten Rules
(Ire) (Nayef). Forgotten

horse came out of it the wrong side,@ trainer Aidan
O=Brien said. "He has two very bad injuries to both his
front legs and there's a chance he might never race
again. It's very disappointing."
In addition to his defeat of defending winner Estimate
(Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) in the Gold Cup, Leading Light won
last year=s G1 St Leger, as well as the G3 Queen=s Vase
at Royal Ascot. He has won eight of 12 outings,
including six group stakes.
Veteran globetrotter Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top
{Ire}), fifth as the favorite in Saturday=s G1 QIPCO
Champion S. at Ascot, emerged from that turnover in
good shape and will now target Hong Kong=s
International Meeting Dec. 13 for the fifth time, trainer
Corine Barande-Barbe told Racing Post.
Despite the 8-year-old=s favorable record on soft
surfaces, Barande-Barbe noted that Saturday=s going
may not have been to his liking.
"He's in good shape and feeling very happy with
himself,@ she told the trade daily. AHe didn't seem to
want to engage fifth gear [in the Champion]. Perhaps
something will come to light, but I think it is more likely
that the race just didn't go his away.@
She added, "he was stuck wide the whole way and I
also wonder if the holding ground didn't really suit him.
He loves it heavy but, given the problems he has had in
the past, it was perhaps a bit greasy for him and I think
that he maybe saved himself a bit on it. When the vets
took him to be sampled after the race, he wasn't
sweating or blowing like the rest. He is entered in Hong
Kong and if he seems well he will go."
Cirrus des Aigles made his first voyage to Hong Kong
in 2009, finishing fifth in the G1 Hong Kong Vase, and
has contested the G1 Hong Kong Cup in 2010
(seventh), 2011 (fifth) and 2013 (third).

The yearling sales this year have ticked along largely
in step with 2013 results. Fasig-Tipton=s July sale
started the season with a $94,154 average, up 4.9%
from 2013; and a $7,000 median, down a slight 2.8%
from a year ago. The results from Keeneland=s
September sale also closely mirrored 2013 figures, with
its cumulative average down just 2.8% and an identical
median.
Browning expects that trend to continue during the
three-day October sale.
AThroughout the yearling sales of 2014--beginning
with July and likely to continue in the next three days-we=ve seen a fairly consistent and comparable market
to 2013,@ Browning commented. AI think we=ve
continued to see an emphasis and the strongest
competition on what are perceived to be the quality
offerings that have a combination of both physical
conformation and an acceptable level of pedigree.@
Still, there remains one part of the market that has
continued to struggle.
AI think we=ve seen that the lower segment of the
marketplace continues to be difficult, despite smaller
numbers, and there has been some weakness in the
lower level of the market in 2014,@ Browning noted. AI
would expect the same trends to continue. I don=t see
any reason for our sale this week to be any different
than any sale that we=ve seen throughout the bulk of
this sales year.@

have confidence in the quality of product that is going
to be here. Sellers are absolutely comfortable bringing a
very good horse that may have needed time or may
have missed an earlier sale and they know that there is
going to be legitimate, solid activity for that horse.
ABuyers know that they can come here and expect a
sales graduate from here who has a chance and is
capable of winning a Breeders= Cup race or winning a
Kentucky Derby or a Classic race,@ Browning continued.
AAnd that is a very positive sign.@
The key to a strong three-day sale is a diverse buying
bench and Browning thinks the October sale will check
that box.
AWhen you=ve got 1200 horses in a sale, you=ve got
to have a broad representation--a combination of end
users, pinhookers and we hope to have some
international participation,@ he explained. AYou need
everybody and anybody who can buy a yearling to be
participating in this sale and I think, honestly, what
attracts a large group of buyers here is that there is
something for everyone. Whether you=ve got $10,000
to spend on a yearling or $500,000 and up to spend on
a yearling, you can probably get your order filled here.@

Jockey James Doyle, who picked up a seven-day ban
and a ,10,000 fine for using the whip above the
permitted level while riding Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo
{Ire}) to victory in the G1 Qipco Champion S. Saturday,
is unlikely to appeal the stewards= decision, the rider
said yesterday.
"I haven't spoken to anyone about it yet and hadn't
really thought about it," said the retained jockey to
Noble Mission's owner, Khalid Abdullah. "I would say
the chances [of an appeal] would be pretty slim. The
rules are there and you have to take the consequences
at the end of the day. There are no qualms there.@
Doyle said he hoped the race would be remembered
for Noble Mission=s gallant performance, rather than the
ban. The 5-year-old was winning the race for trainer
Lady Jane Cecil two years after his famed elder brother,
Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), ended his unbeaten career
there for the late Sir Henry Cecil.
"Hopefully the suspension and the fine won't
overshadow what happened,@ Doyle said. AI don't want
such a great race marred by people saying, >he got a
ban and a fine.= That would be upsetting. Hopefully
people will just remember the battle the two horses
[Noble Mission and runner-up Al Kazeem] had. The race
produced a fairytale ending."
The ban runs Nov. 1 and 3-8, meaning Doyle would
miss the Breeders= Cup and G1 Melbourne Cup.

QATAR BLOODSTOCK, AGA KHAN STRIKE DEAL
A deal brokered between Qatar Bloodstock and the
Aga Khan=s Studs will see Saturday=s G1 Queen
Elizabeth II S. winner Charm Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit
{Ire}) and freshman sire Makfi (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) trade
places in France and the UK over the next two seasons.
Charm Spirit, who retires with three straight Group 1
victories, including the Prix Jean Prat and Prix du
Moulin de Longchamp, will stand his initial season at
Tweenhills Stud in the UK next year before rerouting to
Haras de Bonneval in France for 2016. Makfi, who has
stood at Tweenhills through this year, will stand at
Haras de Bonneval next year.
"We are very excited at the prospect of working with
the Aga Khan Studs," said David Redvers, managing
director of Tweenhills. "Makfi's progeny have already
enjoyed a lot of success in France and we are delighted
that under this new arrangement he will stand in
Normandy and be more accessible to French breeders.
We are committed to standing our best stallions in
France at the Aga Khan Studs, as well as in Britain at
Tweenhills. Next season Makfi will stand at Haras de
Bonneval and in 2016 it will be Charm Spirit's turn."
