MADISON ARROYO AND ALEXANDER BOSTIC
TOP HOT STOVE LEAGUE DINNER AWARDS
Union County stars Madison Arroyo and Alexander Bostic were named High School Softball
and Baseball Players of the Year at the 6th Annual
Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Awards Dinner
last Saturday night. The high school seniors won
two of the 18 awards presented in front of over 700
guests at Charlotte Catholic High School. Now in its
sixth year, the Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League
Awards Dinner is a player recognition dinner held
annually by the South Charlotte Sports Report to
celebrate the success and growth of youth baseball
and softball in our community. The sold out crowd
enjoyed a lively auction, pre-event social, dinner
from Hickory Tavern and special visits from Chad
Tracy of the Washington Nationals, Tyler Tewell of
the Atlanta Braves and Mike Shildt of the St. Louis
Cardinals.
A special part of the evening featured eight year
old cancer survivor Adam Tanksley. Hot Stove
League President Tripp Roakes announced that Adam’s name would forever be atop of the Spirit of the
Game Award. Guests were treated to a special video
on the battle that Adam has fought in his childhood
and a special on-stage appearance from Adam. A
live auction of three signed major league baseball
jerseys raised over $1,500 for Adam’s foundation,
Chomp Childhood Cancer.
“Having Adam on stage with me and naming the
Spirit of the Game Award in his honor is a memory
I will never forget. Adam is such an amazing fighter and friend. It was very special when his family
agreed to be a part of the Hot Stove League Dinner.
Hopefully we were able to gain more publicity for
the charity and to help them take a step forward
with their growth.”
At the end of the night, Madison Arroyo and Alexander Bostic were announced as the winners of
the two featured awards.
Madison is a senior at Marvin Ridge High School.
She has led the Mavericks for all four years of her
high school career and she will attend Mississippi
State University next season to continue her education and softball career.
Alexander is a senior at Weddington High
School. He has been a huge part of the Warriors
success both on the mound and at the plate. Alexander will attend Clemson University next season to
continue his education and baseball career.

JOSH BLACK
JESSICA WEBER
Providence High School Senior Josh Black has been named the Architech
Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week. The son of
Bill and Tracey Black will serve as a senior leader for the Panthers Baseball Team this spring. He hopes to help the Panthers win ball games and
ultimately a state championship this season.
Cuthbertson High School senior Jessica Weber has been named the
Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week.
The daughter of Mike and Michelle Weber is one of the top softball
players in the state. She will head north to Eastern Illinois University
next season to continue her education and softball career.
Josh recently signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent to attend and
play baseball at Furman University. After being named a Prospect Wire
Underclass All-American as a sophomore, Josh began to attract the attention of many college teams. An injury during his junior year provided a
setback, but Josh worked twice as hard to make sure the colleges knew he
had the talent to play Division 1 Baseball. Before he arrives on campus,
Josh hopes to help Providence win another Southwestern 4A Baseball
Championship.
Jessica has started in centerfield all four years at Cuthbertson. As a
junior Jessica hit .481 and was awarded the Cavalier Pride award. .
When Jessica is not playing high school softball, she is playing with her
elite travel team, the Lady Lighting Gold 18u.
Inside the classroom, Josh carries a 3.57 weighted grade point average and has scored a 1920
and a 32 on the SAT and ACT respectively. Congratulations to Josh Black for being named the
Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.
Jessica is an excellent student and an active participant in the community. She is the founder and President of the CHS S.A.V.E (Students
Against Violence Everywhere) Club. In the classroom, Jessica is an
A-honor roll student with a 4.5 grade point average. Congratulations to Jessica Weber for being
named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week.

MATT WAHLERS WINS THREE
STRAIGHT TITLES
Marvin Ridge Middle School eighth grader
Matt Wahlers is one of the top young wrestlers
in the community. At 5 feet, 11 inches tall and
215 pounds, Matt Wahlers can be an intimidating force on the mat. He recently accomplished a very impressive feat by winning his
third consecutive Union County Middle School
Wrestling championship. The 14 year old son
of Scott and Denise Wahlers also plays football
for the Mavericks and basketball at WCWAA.
Matt is very proud of all the accomplishments
those three teams were able to make, however the recent wrestling championship stands
out.
“Wrestling began for me in the 6th grade
when I heard that Coach Robert Grasty, would
be the coach. Having worked with him on the
football field, I had great admiration for him.
I remember our first workout being one of the
hardest workouts I’ve ever had. But I loved the
challenge. In 6th grade regular season wrestling, I was 50/50, so I did not know what to
expect at Counties. With Coach Grasty and a great support group from my team and
our families, we all did our best. My opponent had me on my back, but I was fortunate
enough to have escaped and went on the win.”
“In 7th grade, I had only lost one match in regular season, and had high hopes for
Counties. Coach Grasty gave me words of encouragement “ Do what you do best.” I
was able to win. In 8th grade, I found myself with one loss,up against a tough opponent, and missing my mentor and friend, Coach Grasty. I was feeling pressure of
doing well after back to back wins at Counties. Thankfully I was able win at Counties,
for the third championship in a row. It was such a great accomplishment for me, and
I thank my family and the Marvin Ridge wrestling family for your love and support. I
look forward to wrestling in high school.”
Matt works hard in school and says his favorite class is History. Congratulations to
Matt Wahlers for his dedication and success on the wrestling mat.

Marvin Ridge High School junior basketball
player Melissa Blatnik is one of the team leaders
for the Mavericks Basketball Team. The 17 year
old daughter of Tony Blatnik and Abigail Marek
plays small forward and helps the team with both
her offense and defense. Melissa serves as a team
captain, even though she is only in the 11th grade.
Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about
Melissa.
What sports do you play in school?
“I play only Basketball. I have been asked numerous times to join the track team but sports
today tend to be year round. So I have decided
to concentrate on basketball playing both for
Marvin Ridge and then for my AAU/Club team
during the spring and summer.”
How is your basketball season going to
date?
“I have had my ups and downs. I have been
working hard to improve every game. In my
best game I scored 18 points. But what I do personally is not that important to me. It’s all about
the team. I can’t do it all by myself. I value all of
my teammates. When my teammates are fully
engaged and playing as a team, I am a much
better player! We have grown leaps and bounds
over the year and that is very gratifying to me.”
What position do you play and how do you
best help the team?
“I play mostly at small forward. I like taking
short range jump shots. About a year ago I
Front Row: (L-R)

Favorite memory playing basketball?
“My favorite basketball memories would have
to be when I had brutal, hard practices with my
AAU team and how my team stayed together
and fought for each other. I like to push my limits and work hard as a player because it shows
confidence in your abilities. It also motivated
my teammates to do their best. It feels great to
accomplish something that seemed impossible
and it created a bond with the team when we all
made it through those practices together.”
How do you balance studies and sports?
“It’s hard at times. I am very organized. I have
to keep up with my schedule. I usually try to get
as much homework done before practice depending on what time it starts. I generally spend the
weekend mornings catching up or getting ahead.
Scheduling is very important.”
How well do you perform in the
classroom?
“I am a good student and make mostly A’s. I
have been in the FFA Club, the FCA Club, and
also Caring for Kids Club. I want to major in
Special Education in college so I am working
on finding somewhere I can do some volunteer
work with special needs children. I have a cousin
with Down Syndrome and find it very gratifying
when I’m sharing my time with her during our
visits.”
What else are you involved in away from
school?
“I work part time at Donato’s Pizza at Providence and New Town Rd. We have a great
team there too! It is so much fun working there
and we all have a good time while getting the
job done. I was even surprised one night when
Antawn Jamison who plays now for the L.A.
Lakers came in with his family! It was so cool to
meet an NBA player. He was an extremely nice
person and fun to talk to. I made his pizza and
he allowed me to get a picture with him!”
