Since launching Black Entertainment Television in 1979 with then-husband Bob Johnson, Johnson has gone on to tackle other ventures including sitting on a number of refutable boards, producing documentaries and becoming part-owner of three professional sports teams – the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals. Johnson is also a partner in ProJet Aviation, a comprehensive aviation service company, and a partner in Mistral - the makers of fine bath, body, and home products. In 2012, she launched her own collection of luxury scarves inspired by her travels around the world. As if that wasn’t enough, Johnson is also founder and CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, a hospitality and management company which oversees a growing portfolio of luxury properties, including three Florida golf and family resorts reaching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean – Innisbrook Resort in Tampa Bay, Reunion Resort in Orlando, and Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast. Johnson’s equestrianinspired and luxurious Salamander Resort & Spa debuted in August. Located in the heart of Virginia’s horse and wine country, the flagship resort was recognized by USA Today as among the world’s top eight hotel openings of 2013. Salamander was recently selected by Tryon Equestrian Partners to assist with the development and management of hospitality and golf operations for the $100 million Tryon Resort opening this summer in Mill Springs, N.C. The Post caught up with Johnson while she was in North Carolina last week to make the announcement. In the following Q&A, Johnson gets down to business. Read on to see what she has to say about surviving in business as a woman in a man’s world and watching the “double bottom line” for success. The Charlotte Post: What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs on building a successful business? Sheila Johnson: “First of all, have an enormous amount of patience. Really believe in yourself and your passion, and be very careful who you bring into your space as you are building a company because there are a lot of people out there that really do not want you to succeed and have their own agenda. It’s very tough for a woman these days to be able to do this. So you’ve got to be extraordinarily careful. And lastly, never give up!” TCP: In business, it’s often a “man’s world.” Sometimes women feel their voices are not heard. What advice can you offer on speaking up and being respected in the boardroom? S.J.: “I encounter it every day, and it’s just a matter of being able to learn how to eyeball them and let them know that you have no fear, you are willing to collaborate, you are willing to hear their side, but in the end, we weigh all issues. And if you are the boss, as a woman, that’s where the ultimate decision comes down to, and they have to respect it.” TCP: What makes Tryon Resort stand out as an equestrian destination? S.J.: “I think what’s important about this property in North Carolina… is that we are exposing everybody of every socio-economic income to horses. I think that’s important. There should not be any boundaries that young people cannot reach across to be a party and experience the equestrian community. We are open to bringing everyone here.” TCP: What should we know about the Salamander brand? S.J.: “We are continuing to grow our properties. I want to become one of the most successful hotel brands in the country. We not only own, but we also manage hotels. We are about business. We are about excellence. We have a team of executives that I think are the best in the country. It is my job to keep that team together…” TCP: What other projects are in the works for you? S.J.: “I do so many other things. I am [an executive committee member] of the United States Golf Association, where I am working on more inclusiveness and more diversity. I own three teams in Washington, D.C…. People say, ‘You wear so many different hats.’ They don’t understand, these hats are important in keeping my entire company going because I have cast my net very wide so that I can network and make a difference.” TCP: What is some of the best advice anyone has ever given you about business? S.J.: “The best advice I have ever received is about watching the double-bottom line. It’s not only about making your company work economically, but it’s also about giving back to the community. Because when you do that, the community comes back to you, and that’s what’s important.” Celebrating the Fourth of July Hosting a casual gathering for friends and family can be fun By Michaela L. Duckett [email protected] The Fourth of July holiday weekend is finally upon us. It’s a great time for gathering with family and friends to celebrate our nation’s independence. If you’re hosting a fete this year, event planner and certified meeting professional Karen Lawrence, founder of It’s My Affair, LLC, recommends keeping it relaxed and casual. “The main thing is to just have fun,” she said. “This is a time of year that’s more relaxed. People just want to get together, socialize, relax and have fun. I would not go with something formal. I would do something very informal this time of year.” Instead of fussing with complicated menus, white linen and seating charts, Lawrence suggests finding simple ways to get creative with the holiday’s patriotic theme. Decorating your Fourth of July bash can be as simple as finding fun ways to stick with the red-white-and-blue color scheme. This time of year, party supply stores like Party City are treasure troves of patriotic décor. Pick up a few flags, banners or bunting to hang on the wall. A few helium-filled latex balloons are another simple but effective way to set a festive mood for the holiday. Another suggestion, Lawrence said, is painting a basket red, white and blue and using it as a utensil holder or table centerpiece. She recommends not only tying the theme into your décor, but food and beverages can be color coded as well. “You can buy different color soft drinks in clear bottles,” she said. “Find a drink that’s blue or a punch that is red and something that’s clear. You can incorporate those colors into your tub of drinks if you are doing an outdoor party.” An added bonus of hosting a Fourth of July bash at home is not having to worry about the awkwardness of getting rid of lingering guests. When the sun begins to set, it’s time to usher everyone out to see the fireworks. Here are a few of the best spots to watch a show: U.S. National Whitewater Center 4th of July Festival, July 3-4: Enjoy two days of family fun at the U.S. National Whitewater Center, listening to live music and watching the A red, white and blue theme makes decorating easy. fireworks light up over the whitewater of the Catawba River. Six ways to boost your immune system’s strength Any time someone sneezes or coughs, I instantly get tensed as I think of the many germ particles floating in the air, looking for the perfect body in which to take up residence. As hard as I try to shield them, they move too fast, even for me. The moment they are released, no running or rolling the window down can save me from them. In these cases, our only line of defense is our imANDREA mune system, ROYAL which acts as a protector against germs so that our bodies will not shut down. Boosting your immune system so that it works efficiently requires incorporating healthy eating choices into your diet. Having a general understanding of how your body works allows you to develop a more conscious and healthy lifestyle. The truth is, we inhale thousands upon thousands of germs each day. Take a moment to think about that. Each time you breathe, you are breathing in millions of germs. Knowing this, it makes sense to prep your body for illnesses attempting to attack it. That’s why we boost our immune sys- tem. The same way a company gives out incentives to its employers to boost or strengthen the morale within the workplace so that everyone is happy and on the same page, we want our immune system strengthened so that when germs (bacteria and viruses) attempt to enter our body and shut it down, it will serve as a blocker against them. Ways to boost your immune system: 1. Drink water. We want to flush out the toxins from our bodies. The way to do that is staying hydrated. Another benefit is it helps digest food. A strong digestive system allows nutrition to distribute adequately. 2. Eat smart, eat healthy. Eating a boatload of hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, pizza, and drinking soda by the liter sounds like a good time, and it’s an even better time for those germs to slip in and take over because your immune system is not receiving any nutrients from these types of foods. Citrus fruits loaded with Vitamin C, foods rich in protein (chicken, fish, turkey, lean cuts of beef), quinoa, black beans, spinach, lemon, ginger, garlic, broccoli, kale, sweet potatoes, all are better alternatives for boosting your im- mune system. 3. Adequate amounts of sleep. It goes without saying; if you do not get enough sleep, your body will shut down on you. It needs rest to refuel energy levels so that you can do what you did the day before 10 times better the next day. 4. Proper hygiene. It is simple; wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, brush your teeth, wash your hair, face and body. Period. 5. Check ups. It is necessary to make sure your vitals are still vital and your ticker is still ticking. 6. Exercise. This one is my favorite, naturally. Maintaining a consistent workout plan throughout your week strengthens your body, while your blood is able to flow easier and pumps rapidly. In order to stay healthy we have to think healthy and practice healthy habits. Learn how to take care of your body and protect yourself. Andrea Royal is a Charlottebased bikini fitness model. The Charlotte Post STATEPOINT Southern grilling guru Fred Thompson, author of the backto-basics recipe book, “Williams-Sonoma Grill Master,” shares the secrets to grilling the perfect steak: 1. Buy good meat. Grass-fed and grass-finished beef tastes better and has a bolder flavor that holds up particularly well against the lick of the grill’s flames. 2. Stick with simple seasoning. Sprinkle steak liberally on both sides with salt and pepper when you take it out of the refrigerator. Brush steaks on both sides with a little olive oil (not extra virgin). This facilitates the heat transfer, so you can get an evenly browned crust and a delicious steak house flavor. 3. Remember timing is important. There’s nothing worse than a rubbery, tasteless overcooked steak. Professionals use touch to gauge doneness, and so can you. Touch your index finger to your cheek. When the meat feels this way, the steak is rare. Touch the tip of your nose. That firmness equates to medium. Your forehead is well done. “But please don’t go there,” said Thompson. 4. Let it rest. If you cut into a AMERICAN+ICONS piece of beef as soon as it comes off the grill, you will lose precious juices. Give the proteins in the steak the opportunity to unwind a little bit from the heat they have just experienced. Let most steaks rest at least five to 10 minutes to give the juices time to redistribute evenly throughout the meat. SPEC 5. Skip the steak sauce. A pat of plain or compound butter is the perfect finish. Even experienced grillers need new tips, tools and tricks to perfect their steaks, ribs and dry rub techniques. Or, get a group of family and friends together and offer to help your neighbors with a pet sitting or dog walking service. 3. If you love seniors (and who doesn’t; they’re so funny and sassy), call local retirement homes to see if they need any help entertaining the residents. You and the family could stop by and chat with someone who’s lonely or organize a special event or a play for all the residents.. 4. If the environment is important to your family, check events listings for any organized roadside or neighborhood cleanups. If you can’t find one, create your own. Create a campaign or program to encourage other families in your neighborhood or church to switch to do more to conserve and recycle. 5. Call a local community center or church and ask if they need help decorating for an event. You and your family can lend a few extra hands to help arrange flowers, paint banners, or make centerpieces. If anyone in your clan is tech savvy, maybe they could design a flyer or help create an ad for their website or Facebook page. If none of these ideas appeal to you, put on your creative hat and come up with your own. Better yet, get your family together to brainstorm as a group. Get up, get out and do something for others this summer. That way, your children will actually have something meaningful to say when someone asks they spent their summer. Do some research and come up with a few different options to get started. According to the American [email protected] Academy of HIV Medicine, 90 Do you know your HIV sta- percent of all new HIV infectus? Does your partner? If not, tions are caused by individuals who do not know they are infected. AAHIVM is advocating for doctors around the country to begin routinely testing all new patients they see as the Affordable Care Act has resulted in millions of patients across the country seeing a new health care provider for the first time this year. “Because of the ACA, providers can expect to see new patients coming into their offices,” said James M. Friedman, z11 executive director of AAHIVM. “They should apply the principles of routine HIV testing to all of those patients. This is an amazing opportunity to test patients who have never been tested before, and to facilitate regular testing with those who would benefit from it.” Since 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended routine HIV screening for all patients in all health-care setting, as well as annual screening for those at high risk for HIV infection. The CDC recently released a new testing algorithm that includes a recommendations for early identification of those with acute HIV infection through the use of HIV combination tests, which can detect both HIV antigen as well as antibodies. It is estimated that as many as half of all new HIV infections are transmitted by people in the acute or early stage of infection AAHIVM recommends that HIV providers familiarize themselves with the new testing algorithm, as well as re-familiarize themselves with the CDC’s 2006 principles of routine testing. “It’s time for providers across the country to dust off their routine testing boots, and start implementing these practices afresh,” continued Friedman. “With so much turn over in the health care system, and the growth in the number of patients with new access to care, we can’t afford to miss this opportunity to identify HIV infected patients and get them into regular care & treatment.” Visit the AAHIVM website at www.aahivm.org for more information. The push is on for routine HIV testing in healthcare By Michaela L. Duckett No warrant, no problem By Theodoric Meyer PROPUBLICA The government isn’t allowed to wiretap American citizens without a warrant from a judge, but there are plenty of legal ways for law enforcement and other government officials to snoop on the telling digital trails you create every day. Authorities can often obtain emails and texts without showing probable cause of a crime. These powers are entirely separate from the National Security Agency’s collection of Americans’ phone records en masse, which the House of Representatives voted to end last month. Here’s a look at what the government can get from you and the legal framework behind its power: Phone records Listening to your phone calls without a judge’s warrant is illegal if you’re a U.S. citizen, but police don’t need a warrant to monitor the numbers for incoming and outgoing calls in real time, as well as the duration of the calls. The government can also get historical phone records with an administrative subpoena, which doesn’t require a judge’s approval. Police can get phone records without a warrant thanks to a 1979 Supreme Court case, Smith v. Maryland, which found that the Constitution’s Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure doesn’t apply to a list of phone numbers. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act — a 1986 law that underpins much of how the government can get digital data — requires providers to allow access to real-time data with a court order and historical data with a subpoena. Location data Your cell phone is basically a tracker. Many cell phone carriers provide authorities with a phone’s location and may charge a fee for doing so. Cell towers track where your phone is at any moment; so can the GPS features in some smartphones. In response to an inquiry by Sen. Edward J. Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, Sprint reported that it provided location data to U.S. law enforcement 67,000 times in 2012. AT&T reported receiving 77,800 requests for location data in 2012. (AT&T also said that it charges $100 to start tracking a phone and $25 a day to keep tracking it.) Other carriers, including T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon, didn’t specify the number of location data requests they had received or the number of times they’ve provided it. Internet service providers can also provide location data that tracks users via their computer’s IP address — a unique number assigned to each computer. Courts have been divided for years on whether police need a warrant from a judge to get cell phone location data. Back in 2005, Judge Stephen W. Smith denied a government request for real-time access to location data, and some judges have followed his lead. But other courts have ruled that no warrant in necessary. Emails Here’s where the rules get really complicated. Authorities need a warrant to get unopened emails that are less than 180 days old, but they can obtain opened email as well as unopened emails that are at least 180 days old with only a subpoena as long as they notify the customer whose email they’ve requested. The government can also get older unopened emails without notifying the customer if they get a court order that requires them to offer “specific and articulable facts showing that there are reasonable grounds to believe” the emails are “relevant and material to an ongoing criminal investigation” — a higher bar than a subpoena. Drafts are different. Communicating through draft emails, à la David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell, seems sneaky. But drafts are actually easier for investigators to get than recently sent emails because the law treats them differently. The ECPA distinguishes gives stored electronic data — including draft emails that were never sent — less protection under the law. Authorities need only a court order or a subpoena to get them. Texts Investigators need only a court order or a subpoena, not a warrant, to get text messages that are at least 180 days old from a cell provider — the same standard as emails. Many carriers charge authorities a fee to provide texts and other information. Sprint charges $30 for access to a customer’s texts, according to documents obtained by the ACLU in 2012, while Verizon charges $50. The ECPA also applies to text messages, which is why the rules are similar to those governing emails. But the ECPA doesn’t apply when it comes to reading texts or accessing other data on a physical cell phone rather than getting them from a carrier. The Supreme Court recently ruled that police needed a warrant to search the phones of people who had been arrested. The court dismissed the Justice Department’s argument that searching a cell phone was not materially different than searching a wallet or a purse. “That is like saying a ride on horseback is materially indistinguishable from a flight to the moon,” Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote in the opinion. Cloud data Authorities typically need only a court order or a subpoena to get data from Google Drive, Dropbox, SkyDrive and other services that allow users to store data on servers, or “in the cloud,” as it’s known. The law treats cloud data the same as draft emails — authorities don’t need a warrant to get it. But files that you’ve shared with others — say, a collaboration using Google Docs — might require a warrant under the ECPA if it’s considered “communication” rather than stored data. Social media When it comes to sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, the rules depend on what authorities are after. Content is treated the same way as emails — unopened content less than 180 days old requires a warrant, while opened content and content at least 180 days old does not. Authorities can get IP addresses from social networks the same way they get them from Internet service providers — with a court order showing the records are relevant to an investigation for real-time access, and with a subpoena for historical records. Twitter says that “non-public information about Twitter users is not released except as lawfully required by appropriate legal process such as a subpoena, court order, or other valid legal process,” except in emergencies “involving the danger of death or serious physical injury to a person.” Facebook says it requires a warrant from a judge to disclose a user’s “messages, photos, videos, wall posts, and location information.” Celebrate Week of 07/02/14 – 07/08/14 TH JULY JUL Y4 with Independence Indep In depen dep enden dence Day Day SAVINGS SAVING SA VINGS VING Low Prices E EARN AR N $25 F FOR OR G GROCERIES R O C E R I E S See In-Store for Details $ 99 lb. 7 CVZ C VZtHFU HFU free fr ee Value Pack single item at 11/2 /2 price Boneless Ribeye Steak 9.5-11 Oz. - Select Varieties Varieties Lay’s Potato Chips Without MVP Card $4.29 EA Without MVP Card $9.99 LB Limit 2 Free 2/$5 12 Oz. - Yellow Yellow or White Kraft American Singles $ 99 2 Pork Back Ribs Without MVP Card $4.99 LB Value Pack $ 99 Boneless Chicken Breast lb. 1 Without MVP Card $2.49 LB Without MVP Card $3.59 EA lb. 2/$5 14-16 Oz. Pressured in the workplace, stressed out at home, people are trying to make sense of their lives. 2 Corinthians 4:13-18 promises, “Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day; for our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us eternal LYNDIA glory that far outGRANT weighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” When we release our struggle to a Higher Power, we not only survive, we plant roots that will keep us strong forever. While there’s tension on one hand there’s introspection and exploration on the other. How do you keep on going when life knocks you down? It’s one thing to be positive when things are going well, but it is something altogether different when you’re blindsided. What do you do when someone you love is taken away either by death or some other reason? When a debilitating illness strikes you or a family member? How do you handle it when your grown children refuse to grow up and continue to depend on you? Or when your teenagers decide they are too grown to listen any more? Where do you turn when your “lifetime” job is suddenly downsized after 15 or 20 years and leaves you feeling devastated? All you can do is depend on God. Sharon Lechter wrote a new book titled, “Think and Grow Rich for Women,” but this prayer she included in her chapter on “Faith” will work for anyone – men, women or children. It reads: “As I begin this journey, I know I will feel excitement and energy as well as fear and frustration. I trust that your Divine love is encouraging and forgiving. I believe that true success starts with a richness of spirit. Please enter my heart and help my faith to grow stronger every day. When it is as small as a mustard seed, show me how this tiny treasure can create a forest. When my faith is as huge as a mighty oak tree, help me have the humility to see every small, helpless creature in its shadow and offer nourishment, shelter, and shade. Growing successful is my earthly goal, but growing in faith will remain my spiritual mission.” During my tough times, I kept my faith strong. I read my Bible daily and woke up early each day to pray and meditate, picturing my life as a working woman again and in good health. I turned my television off, and instead listened to Les Brown, Zig Ziglar, Wayne Dyer, Joyce Meyer, Bishop T.D. Jakes, and Louise Hay. I had to strengthen myself from within. It worked, I’m no longer a diabetic, and my finances have greatly improved. My message to you is that you can make it against all odds as well. Making it against all odds, challenges Thursday, July 3, 2014 The Prophet’s Column 6183 NC Highway 109 South, Wadesboro, NC 28170 As It Was In The Day Of Noe (Part 4- Last Part) These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.' (Gen. 6:9) Look at those Words; "...perfect in his generations..." This means that Noah and his family were not polluted by the fallen angels. Just this very small group escaped the pollution. And we are told that; "...Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD." (Gen. 6:8) This means that Noah was saved by the grace of God. Are you saved by the grace of God? I am. After Noah finished the Ark, the LORD said: "...Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation." (Gen. 7:1) "The selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japeth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark." (Gen. 7:13) This leads to the question I've asked several; "how many were saved by grace when the Flood came?" Would it surprise you to know that many flunk that question? Out of all the souls on the earth worldwide, only eight souls were saved. And you ask me the question; 'are you telling us that only eight souls will be saved on earth when the Lord comes back the second time?" I'll answer you with the Words of my Lord; 'As it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man." Doesn't that scare you? Out of all those millions, and perhaps a billion, only eight were saved by grace. What about today, church members? According to reports there are some seven billion souls on the face of the earth. If my Lord should come today, how many would be taken in the rapture? You may answer me like my coworker did at the office years ago; "I feel there are some saved folks in all churches." How blind can a blind soul be? My Lord is coming back for His Blood-washed church. Have you been washed in His Blood? I have. Does the Blood cover all your sins? The Blood covers all my sins. I told the folks at my mother's funeral in May of 2007; "you cannot go into the presence of God the Father apart from the Blood of Christ. If you could go into the presence of the Father apart from the Blood, it would mean instant death for you." Now, you can take that lightly if you please. Soon you'll be looking back in unspeakable regret.Yesterday, Saturday May 24th, I was doing some welding in the shop. I touched the threaded rod I was welding before it cooled off. The heat was unbearable. Do you know what came to my mind when I felt that intense heat? I thought about a young lawyer who opposed me there in the Warren courthouse that day. He was just smacking his lips when he replied to a question from the judge. My thoughts concerning him were; "one day he'll be looking back in regret from the flames of Hell wishing he hadn't fought me, but it'll be too late then." He'd give ten thousand worlds to be in my place, While on earth reprobates make fun of and mock the elect. If they knew what they were doing they wouldn't do it. But God's secrets are with the righteous. That day, soon, they'll all be looking back, lifting up their eyes in Hell with the rich man, crying for mercy. Did you ever know that at this very moment the rich man is still crying for mercy? But Lazarus was not permitted to have any mercy on the rich man. The rich man's money could not help him in Hell. That young man over there will not take any of his money to Hell with him. A church member, deceived, will jump up and say; "Bro. Teacher, you are judging that young man." Church member, ask the Lord to open your heart. Will you do that? One day, back there a few decades ago, the blessed Holy Spirit awakened me to my lost condition, giving me the effectual call, raising me from the death sleep. (Eph. 2:1) And He dealt with my heart oh so patiently and tenderly until He revealed Christ to my heart. (Mt. 16:17) Most of you church members are just like the generation of Noah's day; you know literally nothing about being saved by the grace of God, being redeemed with the precious Blood of Christ. And your religious profession is so sickening it makes me want to puke! When I ask you when were you a lost sinner, you don't know what I'm talking about. When did you see that you were a guilty sinner deserving the bottomless pit of Hell? You don't know anything about that. How sad is your case Your Gospel Editor and Teacher, J.M. The Broadway musical's national tour stops in Charlotte July 15-20 at Belk Theater. An inside look at the Gershwin musical from an actor’s perspective By Michaela L. Duckett [email protected] One of the first depictions of AfricanAmerican life in opera, “Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess the Broadway Musical” is based on the novel “Porgy” written by DuBose Heyward in the 1920s and a subsequent play of the same title, which Heyward co-wrote with his wife Dorothy Heyward. It’s a classic American love story that takes place in the 1930s. When we meet Porgy and Bess, it’s a Saturday night in Charleston’s fabled Catfish Row. A craps game is underway. The beautiful Bess walks in with her man Crown, a quarrelsome brutish man who doesn’t treat her kindly. Mix in a natural disaster, dose of forbidden love, some gallons of liquor and a few sprinkles of “happy dust” and watch the drama ensue in this beloved musical. Accompanied by a grand 23-piece orchestra, this re-envisioned Broadway production is set to the music of George Gershwin and includes such legendary songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Got Plenty o’ Nothing.” “Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess” hit the road in November and will wrap its national tour in Charlotte with performances July 15-20 at the Belk Theater. In the following Q&A, Alvin Crawford who plays Crown gives us the inside scoop on what makes the show so special that it still remains relevant nearly 80 years after it was first produced. The Charlotte Post: How do you describe the two main characters, Porgy and Bess? Alvin Crawford: Porgy is a resident of Catfish Row. He’s a cripple and a beggar. And Bess, which is Crown’s girlfriend, can be described as a ‘wanton woman of the night.’ TPC: How would you describe your character Crown? What kind of man is he? AC: Crown might be known as the villain in the show. He loves Bess wholly, however, he is kind of a big brute. Both Bess and Crown are good-time people. They love to party, and they party hard… He’s ‘that guy.’ TPC: Do you personally share any similarities with Crown? Are there any ways you two are alike? AC: Ooh, I’ve never been asked that question. I guess we’re both a success. We’re both big guys. But I think we both love hard. Crown loves Bess completely and wholly. When she doesn’t return his affection when he comes back, he can’t understand it. He doesn’t know how to deal with it, so he fights his way through. TPC: What was the most challenging aspect of playing this character? AC: The most challenging aspect, I would say, is getting to that dark place. He is a person that thinks with his fist first. I’m the youngest of six kids, and I have one brother and four older sisters. So I grew up treating women very well, and women are obviously very important to me. But Crown, however, is not that person. So I had to kind of get over all that and throw Bess around… Crown could be as brutal as possible. TPC: What is your favorite scene from “Porgy and Bess?” AC: My favorite scenes are my scenes (laughter). But one of my favorite scenes is when Crown comes back. The other scene is “I Love you Porgy,” which is also in the second act. It is where Porgy and Bess finally come together and say they want to be together… I think the music is gorgeous, and it tells such a simple story. It’s one of the scenes that people really relate to. There are only two people who used the words “I love you” in our show. That’s Jake the Fisherman and Bess. I think that [takes] courage to say, “I love you, Porgy. Don’t let him [Crown] take me.” There is a toxic connection that Crown and Bess have to each other. We all know that couple who are toxic and shouldn’t be together… But for whatever reasons, they stay together. And that’s what Bess tries to explain to Porgy… She loves him, but has this thing with Crown and can’t get out of it. People relate to that. TPC: What other aspects or storylines in the show do people seem to relate to? AC: At the base of the show, on top of the gorgeous music by Gershwin, is the power of love. It’s created this power in both Porgy and Bess to find this courage to love. Porgy is a beggar and a cripple on the street. He lives in a hollow on Catfish Row and has never been in love. As a result of this extraordinary event that happens in Act One, it causes the strongest guy in the village [Crown] to leave, he actually finds the courage to believe in love and then fights for love. It’s a story of a beggar and cripple on the street that has the prettiest girl in town. He fights the biggest, loudest and strongest dude in town because she says she loves him. You put that on with some of the most gorgeous music you will ever hear, and you’ve got a very powerful story, and a powerful experience. I think that’s what people have been relating to while we’re on tour. The story is about 80 years old, but the power of love is always relevant. White [email protected] The stone sculpture of Zimbabwe will be on display through Sept. 28 at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont . The new ZimSculpt exhibition introduces the art of Shona stone sculpture and the artists who create it. The display includes the work of Passmore Mupindiko, Patrick Sephani and other Zimbabwean artists. Curated within a horticultural display from the savannahs of south-central Africa to its lush tropical high country, ZimSculpt features 100 sculptures, which are also for sale while the artists operate an open marketplace and demonstration area. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden show marks ZimSculpt’s fourth U.S. appearance. Representing nearly 200 Zimbabwean artisans, the exhibit has traveled to the Chelsea Flower Show in the United Kingdom, Royal Botanical Gardens in Ontario and at Naples Botanical Garden in Florida. Though there are different styles of stonework produced in Zimbabwe, Zimsculpt art is mostly contemporary and produced from the geologic family of stone known as serpentine. The sculptures, typically produced without a sketch, are crafted by hand, hammer, chisel and rasp, a coarse file used to scrape material. The hard stone is colorful and dense with fine grain. The exhibition is free with garden admission on the first Tuesday of the month. Members are admitted free, $12 adults, $11 for seniors and $6 children 4-12. Guests are encouraged to bring a bag lunch. The garden is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. DANIEL STOWE BOTANICAL GARDEN Zimbabwean sculptor Passmore Mupindiko putting the finishing touches on a statue.
