NEWCASTLE THE CITY

history with heritage buildings and a community proud of its colonial past.

options; a refreshing mix of boutique shopping and a range of inner-city
galleries, exploring Newcastle is a treat for the senses.

to Queens Wharf where you will find wood fired pizzas, seafood and
locally brewed ginger beer at The Brewery, a famed drinking institution.
Then take the ferry ‘overseas’ to Stockton viewing the working harbour
up close before strolling through a sleepy coastal village or discovering
the treachery of the coastline along the Shipwreck Walk.

most imposing heritage houses and buildings. Christ Church Cathedral

there are a multitude of drinking spots to choose from.

The Fernleigh Track shared pathway connects the cities of Newcastle
and Lake Macquarie. A natural asset, popular with walkers and cyclists,
the former railway corridor extends 15 kilometres from Adamstown
in Newcastle to Belmont in Lake Macquarie.
The first 5.5 kilometres of the pathway are now complete from Adamstown
to Whitebridge. Originally constructed in the late 1880’s to transport coal,
the route passes mainly through a range of bushland settings, with links
to adjoining residential communities.
The Fernleigh Tunnel, at the Adamstown end of the path, is 180 metres
in length and connects the track with the Glenrock State Recreation Area,
which is popular with bushwalkers and birdwatchers.

THE BATHERS WAY
Discover, swim, play & eat!
Stretching from the commanding lighthouse at Nobbys headland
to the Merewether ocean baths, the largest baths in the southern
hemisphere, Newcastle’s Bathers Way is a scenic 5km coastal walk
waiting for you to discover, play, swim and eat any way you choose.
Take two hours to walk the path or stroll short sections and circle back via city
streets. Better still take a month of sundays to experience it all.
Engaging tales of Newcastle’s indigenous and convict heritage, culture and
natural history weave their way along the track. Look for the yellow information
signs that are the storytellers, helping you navigate the Bathers Way.
 Investigate the historical site of Fort Scratchley, the only fort in Australia
to have engaged the enemy in a maritime attack.
 See Nobbys breakwall, whose foundations were laid by convict gangs,
forced to quarry stone against surging seas.
 Satisfy an inquisitive nature by exploring rock pools and their inhabitants,
watch playful dolphins riding the waves, or if you’re lucky catch a glimpse
of migrating whales during the winter months.
 Enticing sandy beaches, secret swimming spots and sparkling ocean baths
are the pride of the path.
 Walk through the Art Deco pavilion at Newcastle Ocean Baths and dive
into the saltwater pool for a leisurely dip.
 Follow a narrow track down a cliff to the secluded Bogey Hole,
where the waves come teasing the edge when you least expect it.
 Get competitive with a game of beach volley ball, try new tricks at the skate
park, go snorkelling into the underwater world, hang-glide from Strzelecki
Lookout, take a ride on some of the best waves in the world, or simply relax
on the sand and let the ocean roll in.
 A long walk is bound to stir up an appetite and all cravings are catered for.
Choose one of the kiosks for traditional hot chips and sauce by the seaside
or devour an icecream before the sun can melt it away.
 Sizzling barbeques set the scene for the perfect picnic lunch,
enjoyed in one of the treelined parks along the way.
 For a gourmet delight, venture off the track and to nearby Darby Street,
The Junction or the City Centre to sip on coffee and soak up the café culture.
