Vol 6 - No 13 Saturday - July 6th, 2013 RR - $3.00 Shock Absorbers for your Teeth 8376 5144 THE FOOTY BUDGET THIS WEEK 60 PAGES - WITH 8 PAGES OF “DAYS GONE BY” THE AXEMEN WILL SUGGEST IDEAS OF HOW TO IMPROVE Over the next few weeks the Axemen will constructively be putting into our columns, how the SAAFL can improve the competition, or at least ensure that people will begin to think outside the square. People always have to look forward and to keep making cosmetic changes to the competition to make it more attractive. Some of the ideas will be “outside the square” while some of them will be more conservative. We know that we are just little “wannabe administrators” but we have to start somewhere, if we are to achieve the lofty heights, of such great luminaries, as Mr Capogreco. One area will obviously be media. Over the six years the “Footy Budget” has been in production its success has seen the advent of further, complimentary media organisations. These include the very popular radio shows hosted from the studio of WOW-FM, and produced on Game Day and as a Monday evening wrap up show. It is a fact - that the “Footy Budget” is the most read football product produced covering the amateur football played in Adelaide. There is no question of that. We think the success of the “Footy Budget” attests to the football knowledge, expertise in media, and experience of the editor and founder, Luke Hosie. After speaking with him this week, “he does not believe that”. He believes that “having the best writers on the Footy Budget and people on the radio shows” is the reason. The “Footy Budget” promotes amateur football like never before, and has brought about ‘Teams of the Year’ and a myriad of incentives for players and clubs. This series of success in the promotion of amateur football, has come at no cost to clubs. Contrast the success of the “Footy Budget” and the two radio shows, to that of the SAAFL media. Everything they have touched in media, from the old 5RPH radio show, Australia live TV, Podcasts, Grassroots, Grassroots on-line the Centenary book, and a myriad of other ventures has cost clubs, sponsors and the league hundreds of thousands of dollars. Footy News is just awful, and is not well read. Time the league “cuts it losses” with media ventures and appoint the “Footy Budget” to conduct media. They won’t however - but they just don’t have the expertise and should be using coffee makers on football matters. Instead “they are out there again” trying to take on media. Most of the executive know that both the “Footy Budget” and radio shows are the best products. A massive problem is that many of the current executive made the original “bad decisions” and don’t like admitting their blunders. The score line was a massive win to Scotch OC over Eastern Park by 171 points. The score was 35.16 (226) to 8.7 (55). Dan Cahill kicked 12 goals, Paul Cahill 9 goals and Joe Beilby 6. This was a huge turn around, as Eastern Park defeated Scotch OC only ten weeks ago at Dwight Reserve. Each of the Cahill’s kicked 5 goals in the final quarter, where Scotch OC kicked 15.3 (93). How many brothers would have ever kicked 21 goals between them in a game of football? If the ‘little orange martians’ don’t give 3 and 2 votes for both Cahill’s, there should be a royal commission. Previously the highest score for Scotch OC was 36-24 (240) v Wattle Park Teachers College, in 1959. • Just a word of warning from the Editor to some coaches out there. If you are going to give a serve to the crowd and opposition, there is a very good chance that you will get it back. Just don’t say anything in the first place, or you can only expect to get it back in spades. Works both ways, and coaches have to be very aware, that WE have to shut up on the boundary line, and take what comes our way. If you put yourself out there as a coach or assistant coach or official, then you know that you are fair game for spectators. End of story. That also goes for SAAFL executive and staff. “One that we know of” has a massive liking for shooting his mouth off at games. One case only happened the other week. Where there is a conflict of interest, it is best not to attend games, where a conflict may occur, and then make a goose of yourself. • The Axemen have heard on the grapevine that the SAAFL executive have made a very good decision. If they don’t think that 300 people will attend a game at Thebarton, then they won’t enforce the game to be played there, as the club’s would not get back their minimum dividend. Makes perfect sense. There are many clubs who make more from a game at Thebarton than others. Club’s who don’t get home bar takings, and other reasons, should get to play there more often in the future. Some club’s with big crowds, bar, canteen and BBQ facilities lose a bucket load of money, when at Thebarton. Makes for commonsense. Last week, against the reigning premiers, they were completely out played and were defeated by 95 points. PHOS Camden are just too far away from the other sides, to avoid relegation. Their percentage is also of major concern. Gary Williams will be trying to keep his young group together and also giving their young players as much game time as possible - so the stay in D2 will only be short. He has a lot to work with and much potential. Tom Bedding and Aaron Bergsma have not stopped trying all season, and on Saturday had good support from Sam Inglis, Casey Beard, Blake Ardill, Ryan Bartlett and Adam Scholz. They will still be trying to win as many games as possible to finish the season on a high, but the midfield dominance and Sean Rusling up forward will be too much this week, as the Blacks will record a good win. It was a game where at no stage did you think Adelaide University would win, but they were never really out of it. Ben Smelt kicked three goals up forward, while Brant Ellis after coming up from the reserves has kicked valuable goals, as did midfielder Seb Paynter. The Goodwood defence held Rusling to just the single goal. George Hurley-Wellington continued his brilliant year and was best for the Blacks, and he had good support from Jack Lewis, Will Paynter, Simon Sharley and Andrew McIntyre. The Blacks by plenty. They are now level with Broadview and not far off Gullies, as the run home hots up, to see who will join PHOS as the relegated sides. It was a case of the old and new last week, which would have impressed the Gaza faithful. Paul Merritt was best afield and good support from the Radetti brothers and the experienced, yet young John Boxer. Probably only poor kicking from Gaza kept the Tigers in the game. The Tigers do have a long list of injuries, and at the wrong time of the year, but they will have to fight hard now to avoid relegation. It comes down to Broadview, Tea Tree Gully and Gaza. Andy Read has been in great form of late, as has Damian Thamm. Both have had a fantastic month of football. Nathan Grocke, Tim Dimasi with his 3 goals and also Scott Burnett with is 2 goals were also valuable contributors. This week they play a side which has had a myriad of injuries recently and are beginning to get some of their better and more experience players back. They extended their lead over an injury riddled Tea Tree Gully each quarter to eventually run out comfortable 57 point winners. The game was effectively over at half time, as the Sharks held a commanding 6 goal lead. Big Joel Cullen has been a handful for opposition defences and kicked 6 goals, while Jamie Grosser and Aaron Dart both across half forward, kicked 5 and 3 goals respectively. Jake Pavlich and Tim Broadbent were also good through the midfield and benefited from Ross Pederson and his outstanding ruck play. The Sharks are hunting third spot now and wont let this game slip. Kevin Baker must be frustrated with the long term injuries to some of his key players. He is likely to get Mitch Sandery back in the next three weeks, but it might be too late. Last week Gullies were no match for Henley at Shark Park and this week they take on heavy weights in Salisbury North. Gullies are locked into a three way battle now, with Gaza and Broadview, to fight off the last relegation spot. Pat McAuley played well last week, while big ruckman Clint Dow played his best senior game for the club, this year. Josh Bollmeyer kicked two goals and was a presence up forward, as was Daniel Uglesic, while Joel Cochrane also played well. Their forward line last week was too strong and offered too many avenues to goal. Matthew Camplin kicked 6 and Jamie Solly 4, while Dylan Brooks contributed 3, Matthew Hood and Sonny Greagan 2. Michael Eichner continues to impress, and has had a tremendous year. Camplin with his six goals was good, as was Jordan, Steven Evans at centre half forward, and Matthew Sharpe. The old collegians were leading comfortably by 43 points at three quarter time and nobody saw the final quarter slaughter coming. St Peter’s mauled the Phantoms, kicking 10.4 to just 2 goals, to run away with a massive percentage boosting win. The win put them only just short of the Blacks, outside the five. Henry Hardy recaptured his form for last year with a superb 12 goals. Matthew Hill and Jack Johnson kicked 3 and 2 goals respectively. In contrast to previous weeks, the ‘Lions’ ball handling lacked cohesion and purpose under pressure whereas Sacred Hearts’ despatch with hand and foot was sublime. Team structures suffered as missed tackles, poor checking, and bad kicking allowed ‘Hearts’ to run the flanks and central corridor almost uncontested from defence into attack with “one” touch football. The loss of ‘Lions’ spearhead Charlie ‘Razor’ Rae to injury prior the start of the game along with fullback Captain Ian Ralston in the first term became problematic as their team dynamics changed significantly. The fact they could only manage 2.11 for the first three terms proved decisive, despite outscoring ‘Hearts’ in the final term to avoid a complete rout. Ruckman Chris Molitor (2 goals) continues his good form whilst other notable performances came from half back Rhys Crampton, on-baller Stefan Thomas, wing James Cibich and HFF Kyron Dixon. Elsewhere Port District’s “ruthless” despatch of hapless Modbury sent a clear message to the opposition teams to bring their “best” game or else!! Coach Mark Tylor has constructed a welltrained team comprising youth and experience with future expectations of returning to division 1 in mind. This was evident as the ‘Maggies’ dominated possession; “gang” tackled, and shut down the ‘Hawks’ running game to completely overwhelm Modbury. Modbury’s side is filled with younger players who have had a difficult season against the more experienced teams. With a major focus on getting experience into their young side, Modbury have fallen short multiple times, when facing most sides. Prince Alfred, their opponent this week, has lifted their performance in the past weeks becoming a serious finals contender. After a sluggish start to the year Prince Alfred OC have now slipped into gear having won their last six games in a row. Last week Modbury lost to powerhouse Port District by a massive 123 points in a disappointing performance for their side. With no multiple goal scorers for the game, Modbury’s forwards suffered from very limited supply and opportunities. Huge pressure was applied to their defensive structure with 25 goals being kicked by Port District. However Modbury were unable to capitalise on their attacks on goal - kicking 4 goals 13 points. Best a field for the ‘Hawks’ were Peter McDermott, Scott Hewett and Sam Hofmeyer. Prince Alfred OC last week won a huge game against Portland by 25 points, and looks poised for the remainder of the year. Prince Alfred OC were leading all day and had a major lead going into half time when they kicked four goals to Portland’s zero. Prince Alfred OC however let Portland back into the game allowing them to kick six goals in the final quarter. Goal kickers for Prince Alfred OC were Karl Siebels with four, whilst James Thomas bagged three. Best a field were William Hugo, Tom Brinsley and Joss Builder. This has been a tight contest in recent times and this week should prove to be no different as both sides push towards finals. The last time these sides met was on ANZAC Day (Round 3), with the boys from Portland getting over the line by 5 points in a thriller! After starting season 2013 like a house on fire, the ‘Thunder’ has struggled over the past fortnight, going down to SMOSH West Lakes and Prince Alfred OC respectively. Over the weekend Portland travelled to Park 9 to take on PAOC in very good conditions. It was clear from after the first 10 minutes, that Portland weren’t switched on and was coming up against a confident opponent - who has won its last 6 games! Portland were controlled in every facet of the game, only managing a measly 3 goals to three-quarter time (down by 47 points)! A six goal final term was a shining light on a rather dim day for the ‘Thunder’, who were simply outclassed (final margin 25 points). Best Players for Portland were: Joshua Walker (3 goals), Dale Laslett and Troy Wilkey. Flinders Park had a solid win defeating Gepps Cross by 14 points in a low scoring affair. Although the margin was close all day, the ‘Reds’ had control of the game for majority of the contest. Flinders Park managed to find space on a number of occasions and drive the ball forward to create enough opportunities to win the game. Best Players for the ‘Reds’ were: Liam Carusi, Adam Hobba and Kieran Johanson. Flinders Park is finally starting to hit some form after a somewhat disappointing start to 2013. The ‘Reds’ have now managed to win their last 4 games and are shaping up to be a finals contender. The loser here will be in relegation territory, if the ever improving Sacred Heart OC can get over the top of Walkerville, who are struggling. Gepps Cross with their superior percentage has them in better shape than Sacred Heart OC. Both of these clubs at the start of the season, were mentioned in despatches as finals aspirants, while the ‘Rams’ were expected to be in the top 3. Injuries to key forwards, to Brodie Hudson and Jamahl Liddle, has resulted in Neil Rawlings having to find other avenues to goal, which has not transpired to the levels that will win games of football. An over reliance of their small forwards and midfielders to kick goals has not resulted in big scores. Last week Josh Wittwer kicked 3 goals and was the only multiple goal kicker. Mark Boothey in defence, Josh Hand in the midfield, Dale Spurway-Humphries in ruck, midfielder/forward Pete Smith and Jack Gibbs were the better players in a game where Flinders Park got out to a 13 point lead at half time, and held on by 14 points, in average conditions. The last half was an arm wrestle, where neither side could get any fluency due to the oval conditions. Kilburn by contrast, had much more of the ball in the first half and should have had a good lead at half time, but only went in a goal in front. By late in the third quarter the ‘Cats’ had kicked four goals to look likely winners, before the ‘Chics’ came storming home to lead by 7 points, with only four minutes remaining. The ‘Cats’ got out of the mire by kicking 1.1 and they had the ball inside their forward 50, when the siren sounded for the draw. It was a meritorious draw for Kilburn in particular, as they had no bench in the last half, due to injuries to key players. Charlie Molyneux was best afield in the first half, before being tagged out of the game in the second half. Big Andy Graham played his best game in eight years in the ruck, or down back, while midfielder Alex Brackstone played well, as did Billy Parks and defender Rick Fox, who has had a stellar season. Gepps Cross at home are a difficult side to beat and they just have too much talent to be sitting where they are. With Walkerville sitting 3 games below the 4th position their conclusion to the season must be faultless to challenge for a possible finals berth. There were great expectations this year for Walkerville and they must regain their early season form when their players were applying a great brand of footy. For Sacred Heart however they must attempt to challenge the heavy hitters of the division, taking down SMOSH, Portland, and Flinders Park. With nothing to lose Sacred Heart may be able to keep away from the dreaded relegation which they felt last year. Although both sides are quite inconsistent, this game will be quite a battle this coming week. Last week Walkerville drew with Kilburn in a tight game that both teams badly needed to win. Although Walkerville were unable to snare a win, coach Peter Scheuffele, was satisfied with the draw given the tight nature of the game. Despite the draw there was improvement within their game in the eyes of their coach. Best on ground for the ‘Cats’ was Jarrod Tregenza, with Arlen Kaesler and Scott Bentley, who kicked two goals, also about the mark. Braydn Fisher was a presence up forward bagging three goals whilst Blake Wegener assisted with two. Last week Sacred Heart beat SMOSH West Lakes by 26 points in an upset. Best a field for Sacred Heart were Craig Tasborksi with 5 goals whilst Henry Spurling and Michael Harders also received praise for their efforts. Thomas Moten provided strong assistance forward in kicking three goals. Although Walkerville come into this game on the back of an improved performance they will be challenged by Sacred Heart who, when firing, have the capabilities to take down most sides. Seaton Ramblers are taking on the in form and rampant Scotch OC, who are coming off a massive win last week, against Eastern Park. This week being at Big Al’s car park, gives the locals an advantage. We also understand Scotch OC, have a few players sitting for exams on Saturday afternoon. Seaton last week travelled to Kingswood Oval, and on the back of Damian Hynes kicking 7 goals, defeated Unley Mercedes Jets by 19 points. The left footed Chris Scherwitzel across half forward kicked 3 and little Callan Annett 2, while star goal kicker Korey Lochel was restricted to just the 1. Hynes was clearly best afield and was supported by midfielder Daniel Polec, tall defender Alex Bland, ruckman Luke Walsh and ever green Paul Marshall. Scotch OC had a picnic up at the “White Picket Fence” against Eastern Park, last Saturday piling on 35-16 to win by 171 points. It was in the second half when the game blew out, with Scotch OC kicking 22 goals, and an amazing 15 goals 3 points in the last quarter. The Cahill’s were the chief destroyers kicking 5 goals each in the last quarter. Dan finished with 12 goals and just the 1 point while Paul ended with 9 goals 3 points. The brothers both also took 18 marks each. Jo Bielby with 6 goals and Will Thorpe 3 were the other major goal kickers in the classy forward line. Clearly the Cahill brothers were best afield and the classy Jono Lagonik and Joe Beilby played well, skipper Tom Broderick was also a stand out. It was a case of all played well, with such a dominant display. It all comes back to whether Ray Mildenhall can find defenders, who can handle the Cahill brothers. He might have to send Damian Hynes back to help with the height and strength of both brothers, however that will not assist their forward line, as they come one dimensional, looking for Korey Lochel. Luke Walsh will spend a lot of time sitting in behind the ball. Sean Coard, Michael Fenny and Todd Gates are fantastic defenders, but lack the height. Although at Big Al’s car park and with many players taking exams, Scotch OC are still the clear premiership favourites. Payneham Norwood Union, appear to be in much better form than the ‘Raggies’ with a strong win over Seaton Ramblers sandwiched between big wins over both Old Iggies and Salisbury. The ‘Raggies’ have been going just okay with a workmanlike win over Eastern Park, a respectable loss to Scotch OC, and an average performance to beat Mitcham. Based on this form you would expect PNU to start very warm favourites and sieze the opportunity to leapfrog the ‘Raggies’ and grab 3rd spot on the ladder. Big Nick Jolly continues to have a super season and the big man is unstoppable when in this form – he marks well, leads hard and can kick a long way, making him probably the most difficult match up in division 3. Mick Newell will get the job on him, and he will need assistance from captain Jarrod Trish who also enjoys the challenge of taking Jolly on. The battle will have a big say on the result. Both coaches have now gone with some youth in the midfield and this will be exciting to watch with support coming from the old seasoned players who have their time in the middle at various stages of the game. Scott Barabas continues to improve for the ‘Raggies’, as does Matt Leigh and big Evan Pontt who complete the group of 19 year olds who support Justin Sheedy and Josh Allen. Tyson Burrows is back to lend a hand to the ‘Falcons’ exciting group led by Jack Sampson and Arthur Agorastos. The ‘Raggies’ forward line hasn’t reached its best form for a number of weeks now and the pressure is on for them to make better use of the inside 50’s presented by the midfield – or Payneham N/Union, will dominate the game. I believe PNU are starting to hit some excellent form and with their confidence growing by the week should be too strong over four quarters on Saturday. The ‘Raggies’ will offer stern resistance early but might struggle to maintain that pressure over 4 quarters. A win here for the ‘Magpies’ puts them equal on points and they could be equal fifth by the end of the day’s play if results go the right way (for them). On the other hand Pembroke OS, should they manage to win this match, will put a two game gap between themselves and Salisbury and the loser of Unley and Old Ignatians, which could make finals really difficult for these teams. Salisbury are coming off a 93 point loss to Payneham Norwood Union and will want to show that they are not only in division 3 to make up the numbers - but that they can push the top teams in the competition and that starts from here. There wasn’t much to talk about in the big loss. Jay Mansfield was the only multiple goal kicker with 5, Chad Barmby is playing good footy in the midfield, with Aaron McPherson and Troy Bennett all putting in solid games. Pembroke OS on the other hand had a good 20 point victory over Old Ignatians. The ‘Kings’ just keep going about their work and do slip under the radar of most of the other clubs. They are a fit team and have structures in place to challenge when it comes to finals. Tom Evans continued his good form in booting 3 goals, along with Henry Nicholson, also with 3, and Henry Bills chipping in with 2. Joshua Starke is finding some valuable form with another ‘Best on Ground’ performance. Fraser Pinkney, Benjamin Hill-Ling, Sam Wills and Scotty Wightman all had solid games. The winner of this match will stay in the finals mix (and a likely battle with Pembroke OS for fifth spot) whilst the loser will have to rely on other results to go their way and a dramatic change in form for the last five games. Unley Jets battled defiantly against a Damien Hyne led Seaton Ramblers last Saturday, going down in a tight and entertaining game by 19 points. The "Khabbaz" family trio led by Michael played well last week, with honourable mentions for utility Nick Petch, hard man Ryan Wilsdon and goal sneak James Canale. Matching up on dangerous forward Nicolas Wark has been a handful for all teams this season, and he has the ability to tear this particular game apart. The ‘Jets’ will be hoping Aden and James O'Sullivan can recapture some form and kick a bag between them. Old Ignatians lost a close battle on at Haslam Oval to a resurgent Pembroke OS outfit by 20 points. After such a tight and hard-nosed game, it will be interesting to see the mentally draining effects the loss may have on ‘Iggies’ and if they can rebound quickly. Utility and club stalwart Joe Pedlar remains a consistent leader along with Patrick Connelly, who is having a terrific season. Other better players from last week included Lachlan "Lachie" Murdoch, midfielder Henry De Poi and gun playmaker, Sam Cooke. Big forward Stephen White will need to have a big game this week and kick plenty of goals for ‘Iggies’ to be in with a sniff. Although Old Ignatians still have key players returning, an excellent coach in Greg Anderson, and Division 2 experience under their belts, it will be hard to stop a classy and consistent Unley Mercedes Jets unit from taking the points in this match. Judging by form it will be hard to actually predict a winner as both teams have really struggled so far this year. Eastern Park with their home ground advantage may help their cause for a win and play in front of their supporters. They will need a better performance though, after coming of a 170 point loss against top side Scotch OC. There isn’t too much to write home about for the ‘Demons’. Maurice Freeman kicked 3 goals and Matthew Paul slotted 2. In terms of the better players Alex Clements held his head high and worked hard all day, Paul worked hard and Peter Diedrichsen tried to impact himself on the game. For the ‘Hawks’ - they remained competitive for the day and made Athelstone work for their win. Mitcham ended up going down by 10 points after playing a man down for the majority of the day after a very dubious red card was awarded early in the second quarter. Big Geoff ‘Fridge’ Hardy since shifting forward has made a presence for himself and kicked 3 goals along with 2 each to John Mason, Steven Wyld and Brett Aitken. Best for Mitcham was Samuel Clark, and since shifting back to the HBF he has been playing good footy along with Simon Tucker, John Mason and ‘Hardy’. This is going to be game where it is very hard to pick a winner. Judging on last week’s form Mitcham will carry a little bit more confidence going into the game after being competitive, while Eastern Park will want to show something after last week’s performance. AXEMEN PGS 20-22 • The WOW FM radio boys had senior coach Kevin Baker on the number 1 radio show last Saturday morning, and he broke the story on Brodie Forbes the ‘football director at the Tea Tree Gully footy club’. Apparently Brodie started playing netball - however, it would seem that in the week before’s game he didn't like the umpires decision and kicked the ground and broke his toe, also during the game he fell over and broke his wrist, he has now retired from netball. • Well, it had to happen sooner or later. The Axemen were talking to a spokesperson from the Kilburn club who “ratted out” the full back of the century. Andy Graham told everyone via every social media network in the world that he was best player last week. The Axemen did some enquiry. Apparently over the last 8 years, “The Big Shrek” has only averaged 22 “Kilburn Dream Team Points” per game. This was for an average of 4 kicks, 3 handballs, 2 marks, 2 hit outs and 3 free kicks AGAINST a game. Last week in a massive game “for him” he got 8 kicks, 5 handballs, 5 hit outs and only gave away 1 free kick AGAINST. That gave him 88 “Kilburn Dream Team Points” for the game, and his “VERY BEST EVER GAME for the club in 8 years”. • Well done to Paul Manuel and the boys at Greenacres, last week. They were the only side in the senior divisions of the SAAFL not to have won a game this year and they got up, for a fantastic victory. • Great to hear from the only female president ever, from a D1 club, when Teresa Daveron from Henley, was on the WOW FM Monday night review. It was a disappointing result for the ‘Demons’ against top dogs Plympton, losing by 66 points after leading in the third quarter. Unfortunately injuries and no bench rotation hurt their chances, as well as Plympton capitalising on their lack of recognisable ruckmen. Down by three points at half time, the ‘Bulldog’ kicked 16 goals to the ‘Demons’ six in the second half. Score line aside, it was a promising performance with both coaches positive as Hope Valley ran out of energy in the midfield. From “rags” to “riches” in a week, the ‘Hounds’ showed tremendous character to overcome a 28 point deficit at the final break to storm home and defeat Pooraka by one point. After a free flowing first half the ‘Bulls’ resumed play by lifting its tempo and work-rate by getting numbers behind the ball in and around the stoppages. Hectorville wilted undersome strong tackling as their opponent’s possession rate and clean delivery created opportunities for their halfforward line to dominate the quarter. In a match winning move coach Scott Masden shifted dynamo Luke Broadbent from defence into the centre after losing on-baller Will Thwaites to injury. This move gave the ‘Hounds’ midfield some much needed grunt as they combined with their defence to fight back en-mass to overwhelm a tiring Pooraka desperately defending their lead. Luke Broadbent (2 goals) on-baller Joshua Ingall and ruckman Tristan Skinner played pivotal roles in the win whilst HBF Jonathon Bennalack and Simon Thwaites were solid in defence. Salisbury West continues to impress by consolidating its grip on the coveted double chance after “crushing” rivals Brahma Lodge by a massive 12 goals at ‘Tiger’ Park last week. In a fine team effort Travis Smith, Kyle Silva, Jack MaCaffrey, Zenon Trigg, and Jason Sandercock were the team standouts. Forwards Justin Davies, Steven Wellington and Darrell McIntyre led the goal-kickers with four apiece. This week’s clash is critical to both teams but more so ‘Heccies’ who have to overcome inconsistencies in work-rate and focus just to keep its season alive. After an even first half, the third term saw the ‘Bulls’ work-rate lift significantly particularly around the stoppages with ruckman Peter Lovell and on-baller Bradley Batten playing prominent roles. Strong tackling and a higher possession rate was rewarded with a 28 point lead at “lemon” time. However, the shift in momentum had come at a cost for coach Leigh Crawford, losing key defender Adam Nitschke with a knee injury along with one other reserve with concussion. Unable to effect his rotations, Pooraka’s structures broke down when the ‘Bulls’ went from attack to desperate defence, as poor decisions and tired legs ultimately saw Hectorville charge home to snatch victory by a solitary point. Pooraka’s multiple goal kickers Brady Tidswell (3), Jason Dolan (3), Kye Vandermoer (4), Brendon Watts (3), along with HFF Nathan Romero, all contributed on the day. Elsewhere CBCOC gave notice that impending relegation will not hinder its potential to shape the finals. The vastly improved Dolphins took it right up to Golden Grove more than matching their highly rated opponents, but frustratingly fell short of the necessary four quarter effortfor victory. Their lack of height in key positions, inconsistent starts, and lapses in concentration has become their “Achilles Heel”. On this occasion after being three goals in arrears at quarter time, CBCOC showed tremendous character and discipline to overcome the deficit to lead by ten point’s midway into the final term before the ‘Kookas’ regained the initiative to win by fifteen points. Greenacres have certainly improved under the guidance of new coach Paul Manual and they will be hoping to catch the injury hit ‘Kookaburra’s’ off guard. Michael Spry was again best for the ‘Dragons’ as they took the game to Pulteney. New recruit, Tyson Collins, gave them a target up front, something they have been missing since Koby Ettridge left at the end of last season. Collins kicked 4 goals and he was well supported by youngster Jack Mau (2). Brandon Bruin was good in the back lines and with Michael Harrison and Matt Drewett in good form the ‘Dragons’ were able to hang in for their first win of the season. The ‘Kookaburra’s’ travelled to the East Parklands and found it anything but an easy win. The ‘Burra’s’ got out of the blocks early and should have put the game out of CBCOC’s reach by quarter time. Poor decision making and indifferent skills allowed the Old Collegians, led by Christian Puccini, back into the game. Former Central Districts Under 18, Jake Huggard, led from the front for the ‘Burra’s’ and even with Simon Peuker kicking 7 goals they could not shake the persistence of the CBCOC side. Some solid defensive play from Adam Peterson and former junior Matt Forester consistently denied CBCOC the breaks they needed to get a good lead. CBCOC hit the front with less than 7 minutes to go and the ‘Burra’s’ had to dig deep. Huggard was switched onto the ball and this proved to be the match winning move as he gave the Grove first use of the ball. With Sykes and Peuker looking dangerous up front the ‘Kookaburra’s’ were able to kick a 15 point winning lead. This week’s game could be a danger one for Golden Grove and Greenacres will be confident of an upset. The ‘Navy Blues’ form has been a bit up and down lately, and some inaccurate kicking did not help this week. Going in as firm favourites, Pulteney got off to a slow start and conceded the first four goals. They were able to draw level but that was it; Greenacres wanted the win more and played like a side fighting for survival. Hayden Cleveland, Jordan Kerr (three goals), Mitchell Harvey (three goals), Benjamin Koschade and Matt Mitchell were best for the otherwise poor team. Not a lot can be said in a disappointing loss where all areas should be looked at to see why the hunger was not there. They were a bit undermanned on the day, revealing some weaknesses, and will be hoping to bounce back this week in emphatic fashion. Plympton will look to continue on their march to premiership glory, after again pulling away from their opposition in the second half, this time to the tune of 66 points over Hope Valley. It was again a team effort that saw the ‘Bulldogs’ claim the points, with 11 goal kickers spread over the field. Jesse Colley was named best, along with defender Alistair Mills, midfielder Tim Dunkley and Cory Selfe. With full-forward, James Vanderhaark, quietening down in front of goal lately (still kicked two goals), Giorgio Kastrappi kicked three goals to lead the forward line. Daniel Roach, Heath Deer and Jesse Colley kicked three goals each also. Plympton seems to fight off any challenge thrown their way, but will have to look out against Pulteney, who handed them their only defeat earlier in the season. With Captain Josh O’Connell to lead a host of returning players, Pulteney will be near full strength. The two heavyweights of the competition have been outstanding in recent weeks making this one a highly anticipated matchup. With just 2 points separating the pair, expect tempers to boil, blood to burst, and exciting, fast footy like you haven’t seen all season. Kenilworth enters this crucial game top of the table after annihilating Glenunga 185-48 last week. The magnificent performance demonstrated Kenilworth’s ability to run and carry, while also showing their smooth transitions from defence to attack, and their effective disposal rates. Nicholas Chesser was brilliant throughout the game, amassing the ball with ease while producing 3 goals. Although sitting at contrasting ends of the table, recent weeks have seen both clubs produce similar inconsistent efforts resulting in a loss of possible premiership points. Both clubs will therefore be looking to produce a four quarter effort, which in Woodville’s case, would cement a top 2 position or in Fitzroy’s case, would keep finals hopes alive. Woodville South was left shattered after dropping the vitally important points to Para Hills last week. The loss also condemned them to second position on the table, a position they have not experienced many times this season. Many fans left the ground in anguish extremely disappointed not to take the maximum points. “Today we did not play great and unfortunately we have now dropped to second!. We need to rebound and get back on track”. Samuel Skews was easily Woodville South’s best amassing large amounts of the ball but more importantly using it efficiently. Opponents Fitzroy moved to 5-7 after an entertaining clash with West Croydon finished 129-111. Adam Pearce was the best player on the ground, continuing his outstanding form in leading the club to victory. Jason Zajarskas played a pivotal part in the victory and also kicked 6 goals. With Fitzroy’s finals ambitions hanging by a thread, victory is an absolute must in this clash. The home ground advantage will certainly help while the confidence gained from last week will also play its part. Woodville South needs to win in order to keep the pressure on Kenilworth in the fight for top spot. Currently the ‘Rams’ are in the 5 and sit above the ‘Roos’ by a game, although Para Hills have a better percentage which will see them jump Glenunga on the premiership table if they are to take the points. Last week Glenunga were smashed to the tune of 137 points by top of the table Kenilworth in a game coach Kane Stewart would want to forget. The old cliché of “one week is a long time in football” must now come into play as it did last week. Two weeks ago the ‘Rams’ won by 66 points against third placed Elizabeth and now need to recapture some of that winning form to play a part here. Tom Flight continued his good season whilst Shane McGuiness was the only multiple goal scorer for the ‘Rams’. Without a single winner on the ground on the weekend the ‘Rams’ were given a football lesson and barely raised a yelp. Both sides are struggling at the current stage, both only managing a single win over the past month. Trinity OS currently sit in 6th position and are still well and truly finals contenders, whilst the ‘Hawks’ sit rock bottom and are in real danger of being relegated. Trinity OS were disappointing in round 12, going down to North Haven by 34 points at Largs North Reserve. The ‘Lions’ struggled from the first bounce, only managing 3 goals to 3quarter time. The ‘Magpies’ were unforgiving, dominating the contest and running out deserved winners. A spirited final term saw Trinity OS kick 5 goals and turn the margin into something respectable. In a disappointing performance, best players were: Terry Collyns, Scott Matthews and Ryan Clarke. After a great start to 2013, the ‘Lions’ have struggled of late and need a win if they are going to push for a top five finish. West Croydon was also disappointing over the weekend, losing by 18 points to Fitzroy. For probably the first time this season, the ‘Hawks’ entered last weekend’s game as favourites. West Croydon was excellent early, applying some good pressure and getting the ball forward on several occasions. As the game went on the ‘Hawks’ lost concentration and struggled with some basic decision making (which has been a pattern all year). A poor final quarter saw Fitzroy overrun the ‘Hawks’ by 18 points. Best for the Hawks were: Nick Symons, Alex Birch (4 Goals) and Luke Woodcock, who continues his consistent season. West Croydon has shown significant improvement over the past month, but desperately need to chalk up a wins if they are to somehow avoid relegation. However the avoidance point may have already passed. In what was a more than impressive performance by a solid CLG side, the ‘Lions’ had complete control over the game from the first bounce. Arren Harvey dominated in the forward line with a 9-goal haul, proving too much for Central United’s back men to control. Barton Sweet was named best on ground for the ‘Lions’, providing a vital presence in the backlines, in his best game for the club. Other standout performers for the ‘Lions’ included Chad Francis at half forward and Mark Hirst in the ruck. Mark Hirst took some exceptional marks around the ground, and his ruck work ensured a stack of centre clearances for the ‘Lions’. The ‘Lions’ kicked an impressive 24 goals in the win, with Stephen Hammond and Chad Francis accountable for 6 of these, with 3 each. The win placed the ‘Lions’ in a very attractive position, second on the leader board, and 2 games clear of third placed Westminster OS. With finals looming the ‘Lions’ will be searching for as many wins as they can in the coming weeks, in order to maintain their position. Lockleys remain in fourth place following their triumph over Mawson Lakes, in a game where Corey Hanna shone, named best on ground for the ‘Demons’. Lockleys were desperate for a win after two losses in a row, and the side delivered despite the close score line pressure. Justin Broughton and Scott Mitchell were impressive on the day for the ‘Demons’, along with William Roberts and Dan Voyzey. Scott Mitchell booted 4 important goals for his team, and Kieran Flanigan joined him with 3. Last time these two teams met was at their ANZAC Day clash, where the ‘Lions’ were victorious by 100 points. The ‘Demons’ will definitely want to put up more of a contest this time round. Normally you would think a pride of ‘Lions’ would have it over a pack of those old time ‘British Bulldogs’, but they have been barking a bit of late. Out of their new kennel and off the leash for most of the season, in racking up 11 on the trot, coach Brad Horsell has to maintain the pressure on his charges to keep them focussed on the game in hand. He wouldn’t want them getting ahead of themselves and take this game lightly. Mitchell Park offered a lot pre-season but have fallen by the wayside as the season progresses. They have been competitive but have not been able to string together a consistent winning combination. Their last two outings have resulted in a fairly large loss to Blackfriars OS and in their prior game they came out good winners over Westminster OS. Between these sides in their first encounter, back in round 4, the ‘Bulldogs’ doubled the ‘Lions’ score in what had been a first half tight tussle. This game is most likely to follow the same pattern. The ‘Bulldogs’ caught Adelaide University with examinations and pounded them. Adam Cross generated out of the centre and Doc Reardon was full of run. The coach at full forward kicked nine and over-all they were far too good for a depleted University. Mitchell Park went down to a running Blackfriars OS. Luke Poerio, in his first game for the club in division 6, was amongst the stats, as was Steve Tonkin (another first division 6 gamer) and Shaun Lindholm. Michael Mazey gathered a further 4 goals for the season (now to 26) with Charlie Georges chipping in with 2. Mazey is about the place each week and for the ‘Lions’ to have any chance they must get it to him with a fair bit more frequency, something coach Mark Harrison will be drilling the team to do. With the bottom four teams on the ladder each having three wins for the season, the winner this week could make the break from the pack and begin the comeback for a top four position. Round 12 will be a week which the ‘Blacks’ would like to forget. There was little positive which came from the 151 point loss to Rosewater. The ‘Blacks’ only managed to produce 4 goals for the game compared to Rosewater’s 27. Rosewater was the better team in all aspects of the game, they managed 37 more scoring shots than the ‘Blacks’ and overall they were hungrier for the win. Joshua Stewart, Nick Williamson, Rhys Zippel and Jared Cmrlec were the only goal kickers for the game, each with a single. University will need to forget last week and focus on playing the football they have played earlier in the season. Despite being last on the ladder, the ‘Blacks’ have had wins over inform teams such as Mitchell Park, Lockleys and Blackfriars OS. For a win this week, the ‘Blacks’ will need to bring back defensive pressure on the ‘Lakes’ to produce limited attacks on goal and capitalise on all their opportunities. Mawson Lakes let their premiership hopes slip further away with an 11 point loss last week to Lockleys. It was a good, tough encounter from the two sides which was reflected on the scoreboard. Despite the loss, Lachlan Kennett provided a positive for the ‘Saints’ with a season high of four goals to his name. Chad Parish and Travis Uern also contributed to the scoreboard with 3 goals each. This is a must win game for the ‘Saints’ if they want to keep their finals hope alive. Two old scholar sides both sit in the top half of the ladder and both looking to enhance their prospects of finals participation with a win in this encounter. The match will be at Glandore Oval which may not give an advantage to either side, even with the ground being Westminster OS’s home turf. Last round Westminster had the bye. Blackfriars OS easily accounted for Mitchell Park by some 8 goals, which followed their close win over the more fancied Lockleys. Westminster had a big win over bottom placed University. The area of the ladder in which these sides find themselves is ultra competitive. However, all the teams in division 6, with a good run home in the second half, can still make the finals. The real battle will be at the other end of the table. Which team will succumb to relegation? Wins now are premiership points that will ensure residency in division 6 with the prospect of moving above in coming seasons. This “ladder pressure” will ensure this is a top game. Last week Tom Guerin was amongst the goals with 6 and was among their best. Mark Demasi slipped through 4, and with a couple more with multiples and several with singles coach Lee Swiderski would be pleased with last week’s effort. Luke Bortolotti was best with support from Brad Hillman and Guerin. They will need to have the whole team firing as Westminster OS will want to take out a win on their home turf. Two rounds ago, Westminster OS, in their very big win over University, had many goal scorers and their best included Josh Pearce, who’s been in the best a couple of times in the few matches he has played in, the reliable Mark Rusby, with another notable performance by “regular in the best” in Tom Easton.
