About Math Olympiads (“數學奧林匹克
數學奧林匹克”)
數學奧林匹克
Created in 1977 by Dr. George Lenchner, an internationally known math educator, the Math
Olympiads went public in 1979. Last year 150,000 students from 6,000 teams worldwide
participated in the Olympiads. 49 of the 50 states and about 30 other countries were
represented.
數學奧林匹克是於1977年由喬治藍區納博士----國際知名的數學教育學者所創立.去年全世界有
多達6,000個隊伍,150,000個學生參加比賽. 包括全美49州及超過30國家.
Math Olympiads competition is held from November to March. There are 5 tests and totally 25
points. The Division E is designed for Grade 4 – 6. The Division M is designed for Grade 6-8.
Top students in the test will be awarded and recognized in their National newsletter.

Math Olympiads Tournaments are quite new to a lot of people. The Tournament is held only
one day for about 3-5 hours. It is designed to allow students in each region to compete in
tournament style like some other popular math competitions (eg. MathCounts and Math
League).

So What is the 2013 Los Angeles Math Cup?
The 2013 Los Angeles Math Cup is an official Math Olympiads Tournament in the Los
Angeles region. We receive questions from Math Olympiads organization and host the
tournament before or after the regular Math Olympiads season (Nov. – Mar.)
TOPKIDS CLUB is honored to host and sponsor the only Math Olympiads Tournament in Los
Angeles region – The 2013 LA Math Cup
May 18th (9 am – noon) Saturday

Fee: $20 for each student

The Competition Rule
There are three divisions:
Division A (G2-G3)
Division B (G4-G5)
Division C (G6-G8)
There are 3 rounds and an awards ceremony.
Round 1: Each student works alone on 10 timed short-answer problems.
Round 2: Each student works alone on another 10 timed short-answer problems.
Knock-out round: Top scorers in each division will be invited to participate in the
final knock-out round.
Awards:
All participated students will receive the certificate of participation
Top 3 Individual winners will be awarded medals

Skill 1 - Read the problem two or three times.
Read the problem quickly the first time as a scanning procedure. As you are
reading the problem the second time, answer these three questions:

Review the equation to see fit is similar to equations from your homework and if it
makes sense. Some formulas dealing with specific word problems may need to be
rewritten. Distance problems, for example, may need to be written solving for each of
the other variables in the formula.

Usually, a distance problem will identify the specific variable to be solved.
