Awards
Honors & Awards ~ Congratulations to:
Richard Aubry, MD, Pediatrics, received the Outstanding District Service
Award for District II, from the Academy College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists. Five doctors across the US received awards for their service.
Sharon Brangman, MD and Khatuna Stepkovitch, MD, Medicine, were part
of a team from Upstate that received the Geriatric Research Award for their
project titled “Impact of a Geriatric Team on the Outcomes of the Hospitalized
Elderly Patient”, from the New York State Council of Health-System
Pharmacists.
David Duggan, MD, MACP, Medicine and Associate Vice President for
Clinical Initiatives, became a new Master of the American College of Physicians.
Mastership is bestowed upon select ACP Fellows each year in recognition of
significant accomplishments in medicine, holding positions of high honor, and
outstanding service to the College. ACP is a national organization of internists
with a total membership of over 123,000. Dr. Duggan has served as both
Governor of the Upstate NY Region ACP and President of the New York State
ACP. There are currently eight masters in the Upstate NY region, and thirtyeight across NYS.
Timothy Endy, MD, MPH, Medicine, has been selected to be a Faculty Fellow
in the National Security Science and Engineering Faculty Fellowships of the
Department of Defense.
James Greenwald, MD, Family Medicine, was recently voted the PresidentElect of the New York State Academy of Family Physicians.
Diane Luft, Health Sciences Library, has been invited to serve on an external
review team for a proposed baccalaureate program in Radiologic Technology at
Trocaire College in Buffalo. The team will evaluate the institution's library and
its readiness to support the new program.
John B. McCabe, MD FACEP, Emergency Medicine, and William D. Grant,
EdD, Family Medicine, have been appointed to the editorial board of the Chinese
Journal of Emergency Medicine. The journal is expanding its offerings in
English language articles. The CJEM is the only such journal in China, is
indexed in EMBASE and will be seeking MedLine/PubMed indexing.
John B. McCabe, MD FACEP, Emergency Medicine, and William D. Grant,
EdD, Family Medicine, were appointed Visiting Professors as the Zhejiang
Chinese Medical University. ZCMU provides programs in fields of medicine,
science, engineering, management and literature (arts) with Chinese medicine
being its main focus.

Nancy A. Nussmeier, MD, Anesthesiology, was appointed to the Food and Drug
Administration Anesthetic and Life Support Drugs Advisory Committee. The
FDA meetings have occurred on March 10-11 and May 5-7, 2008.
Richard O'Neill, PhD, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, is a member and a
major contributor to the HealthLink On Air Team, which won the 2008
President's Employee Recognition "Outstanding Contribution of the Year" award.
Joseph Sanger, PhD, Cell and Developmental Biology, was elected to the Board
of Directors of the American Association of Anatomists for a three year term.
Lynn Beth Satterly, MD, Family Medicine, received the Leonard Tow
Humanism in Medicine Award in May 2008
Paul F. Shanley, MD, Pathology, is the first recipient of the "Excellence in
Teaching Award" of the local Alpha Omega Alpha chapter.
Irene Sills, MD, Pediatrics, has been elected as a member of the Executive
Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Endocrinology.
Eduardo Solessio, PhD, Ophthalmology, was part of a team called “Light
Innovations” which won 2nd place in the Panasci Business Plan Competition. The
2nd place win netted the team $7,500 to put toward their business concept. They
were advised by the following SUNY Upstate Medical University Researchers:
Dr. Robert Barlow, Dr. Daniel Ts’o, and Dr. Gustav Engbretson as well as by
Prof. Larry Bennett from Whitman School of Business at SU.
Sandra Sulik, MD, Family Medicine, began her term as the President of the St.
Joseph's Hospital medical staff. She was voted the first female President of the
Medical Staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in January 2008
Robert L. Sunheimer, MSMT(ASCP)SC, SLS, Clinical Laboratory Science,
has been asked to join a Blue Ribbon Panel of experts (from all over the United
States) on Laboratory Safety which will convene at the CDC in Atlanta GA.
The charge is to investigate critical issues relevant to clinical laboratory safety.
He will be representing the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
Ruth S. Weinstock MD PhD, Medicine, was appointed Co-Chair, Upstate New
York Consortium for Healthcare Research and Quality (UNYCHRQ) and the
Upstate New York Translational Research Network Pilot Research Collaborative
Grants Workgroup for 2008.
AND: While not typical for The Faculty Commons, we thought we should
include this important tribute: “Dr Lionel Rudoph recently ran in the Mountain
Goat race. At 84 years old, he is a valuable member of our Medicine faculty. He
volunteers every Thursday afternoon, precepting internal medicine residents at
UHCC. He remains very current with the medical literature and his experience is
invaluable. A great role model and colleague for learners of any age.”

David F. Lehmann, MD, PharmD, Medicine, developed a new elective
MDCN 2210: Clinical Pharmacology Honors.
Near the completion of the second year, motivated students are asked to consider
broadening their knowledge base in pharmacology to benefit their future patients.
This will be accomplished by identifying one or more representative clinical
cases during the clerkship experience and developing a derivative theme in
clinical pharmacology for eventual presentation and/or publication in a peerreviewed format. Examples of the theme can be (but are not limited to): an
interesting problem in therapeutic drug response, explaining a treatment
resistance issue, or in-depth coverage of an important adverse effect. To do this
the student will be working 1:1 or in a small group setting with the director over
the course of the third year, particularly during the medicine and/or pediatric
clerkships.

Thomas Curran, MD, Assistant Professor, Center for Bioethics & Humanities
Dr. Curran received his medical degree from Georgetown University and
completed his residency and fellowship at Brown University. He has been
voluntary faculty at Upstate since 1996 and is also currently a Neonatologist at
Crouse Hospital.
Jill Thomas, PhD, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences,
Dr. Thomas received her doctoral degree from Miami University. She completed
a Psychology Internship here at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She has
been the Interim Director of Student Counseling here at Upstate and now joins
the faculty.

This celebration is to welcome new faculty, to recognize faculty members who
have been promoted, and to honor faculty members who demonstrate a true
passion for their work, be it research, teaching or service.
Grants for Innovations in Medical Education - 2008 Request for Proposals
For the fourth year, a fund has been made available from the Dean to help
support innovations in medical education in the College of Medicine. A total of
$10,000 is available again for this year’s program. The selection committee will
entertain submissions up to $10,000. Grants will be awarded for the academic
year starting July 1, 2008.
Funds can be used for projects including, but not limited to:

Facilitating collaboration between basic and clinical science teaching

Evaluating for clinical skills
The program is open to full-time basic science and clinical faculty in the College
of Medicine. Applications for funding must be limited to no more than 5-6 pages
and include a concise description of the project. The proposals should include a
statement of objectives (if research oriented) a brief description of the
methodology, a calendar indicating a concluding date, and a proposed budget.

by a selection committee consisting of Drs. Joe Stein, Barry Biddle (Assoc.
Dean, Clinical Campus), Lynn Cleary (Sr. Assoc. Dean for Education) and
Howard Weinberger (Chair, EPC Faculty Development Subcommittee).
Applicants will be notified of their status by July 7, 2008. Awardees are
expected to provide a report of their project at the end of the funding period
(June, 2009). Grant funding will be provided with fifty percent being paid at the
beginning of the project, and the remainder being paid pending a final report.
