Introducing your new collection service
This guide explains how to use the new recycle for Dorset collection
service if you live in a property that has a communal collection.
The seven Dorset councils in the Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) have
agreed to introduce a single collection service to increase our recycling,
reduce the rubbish we send to landfill and drive down costs.
The extent of your service may depend on the space available. The sizes
and colours of your communal containers may also vary depending on
your property.
Please check you have everything. Together with this booklet, you should
also have:
• a kitchen caddy, and
• a free sample of compostable caddy liners
Your new collection calendar will be posted to you before the end
of February. You can also check your collection dates at
dorsetforyou.com/recycle from the week beginning 24 February.

Using your rubbish bin
Please put your rubbish in tied sacks before putting them in the communal
bin. We recommend you double-bag nappies and pet waste.
Authorised rubbish sacks
lf you have received blue sacks for rubbish, this is your annual supply
and equates to two sacks each fortnight. Please use your sacks carefully
as we are unable to supply additional sacks once they run out before
your annual next allocation. We will not be collecting any additional
unauthorised sacks placed out for collection once the new service starts.

Food waste collection
Collecting food waste stops it going to landfill, where it produces
harmful greenhouse gases. Food waste will either be composted
and turned into soil improver or used to produce energy.

Locking your caddy
Your caddy has a lockable lid to keep animals out.
To ‘lock‘ your caddy, close the lid and move the
handle to the front (as shown in the picture).
Using your kitchen caddy
Your kitchen caddy is there to help you collect food
waste in your home before emptying it into the larger
communal food bin. It has small holes in the lid to
prevent food waste sweating. Please do not put your
kitchen caddy out for collection, only use the communal
food bin.

You can put food waste straight into your caddy or line it with
compostable liners or newspaper to make it easier to empty.
Lining your caddy with compostable liners
Please only use liners with the ‘compostable’ logo (above). Do not use
plastic bags. Compostable liners can be bought at most supermarkets, many
local shops and online. For a list of local stockists, go to dorsetforyou.
com/recyclefordorset/food or call (01305) 221040.
1. Tie and lift the liner
out of your caddy
2. Place in the
communal food bin
Alternatively, line your
caddy with newspaper
For more information go to dorsetforyou.com/recyclefordorset/food
Lining your caddy with newspaper
Use two sheets of newspaper to line the inside of the caddy, making sure
you can close the lid. When the caddy is full, lift the paper ‘parcel’ out and
put it into your communal food waste bin.
Tips
• Keep the caddy lid closed
• You can clean your caddy by swilling it out with a mild
detergent or bicarbonate of soda
• Your caddy is dishwasher safe

Household recycling centres
East Dorset residents can use Millhams in Bournemouth if they show
a council tax bill. People in some parts of East Dorset may also apply
for a permit to use Nuffield in Poole. Dorset residents can also use
Somerley in Hampshire.
Visit dorsetforyou.com/recycling-centres or call
(01305) 221040 for more details.
Mini recycling centres
You can also take certain materials to mini
recycling centres. These include foil, waxed food
and drinks cartons, clothes and textiles and small

Bulky and commercial waste
If you need to dispose of a large item of furniture or other household
goods, you can arrange for it to be collected from your property.
A commercial waste collection service is also available for businesses.
Furniture reuse
A number of furniture reuse organisations in
Dorset will collect unwanted items such as
furniture and white goods for free to sell to
people on low incomes at affordable prices.
For more information, visit
dorsetforyou.com/furniturereusegroups
or call (01305) 221040.
Bulky waste collections
We can collect bulky items, such as furniture,
white goods and televisions, from your home for
a charge. For more details or to request a
collection go to dorsetforyou.com/bulkywaste
or call (01305) 221040.
Commercial waste collection service
The Dorset Waste Partnership offers local
businesses a competitive collection service for
rubbish and also for paper and card recycling.
This includes people working from home, B&Bs
and holiday homes. Disposing of commercial
waste in household bin collections or at household
recycling centres is illegal. For more details, visit
dorsetforyou.com/commercialwasteservices
or call (01305) 221040.

Reduce, reuse and recycle
The recycle for Dorset service makes it easy to recycle but it’s always
better to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the first place.
Have you tried?
Composting at home
Home composting is the most sustainable way
to recycle garden waste and some food. We
have secured an offer for compost bins, water
butts and accessories at reduced prices. Go to
getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 4444
(quoting reference number DOR 010A).
Using real nappies
Parents could consider using modern washable
nappies rather than disposables. Washable
nappies are now shaped, can be fastened
with poppers or velcro and can be put in the
washing machine on a normal wash. We
offer £30 towards the cost of real nappies
per baby. For more details visit
dorsetforyou.com/realnappies or call
(01305) 221040.
Reducing your food waste
You can reduce your food waste by only buying
as much as you need, freezing items you won’t
use for a while and using up any leftovers. You
can find lots of ideas for tasty meals using
leftovers at dorsetforyou.com/lovefoodhatewaste
