Notan Painting: How To Ensure Success In Two Minutes
Unit Four
CREATING A LIMITED VALUE STUDY
Introduction Use the same procedure as if you were doing a painting, but limit yourself to
four (or possibly five) values.
Materials Use any of the following:
♦ Light gray, middle gray, and black ink brush pens. You need four or five values.
♦ black and white oil paint.
Tips
♦ Work larger than you would for a mass notan. Paint for example 5”x7” (12cm
x 18cm) or 9”x12” (23cm x 30cm).
♦ You may work soft and hard edges into the painting if you wish.
Caution
♦ Unlike the smaller mass and contour paintings, match the actual values you
see as closely as possible. For example, you would use a middle gray for the
shadows, not black.
