President’s Column
Yupadi Prasertwanitch
My two years of presidency is coming to
an end. It’s been a pleasure meeting and
working with so many of you. I thank all the
board members who tirelessly worked for
the benefit of our society. Special thanks
to Joan Spohrer who made this beautiful
newsletter possible, and to Dan Slattery for
printing and sending the hard copies out to
members who have no e-mail. I thank the
many members who brought their paintings
to our exhibits and the hospitality chairs Barbara Walsh and Howard Scott
for making our exhibits as nice as they were. I cherish the many new friendships formed during these past two years.
Our Paint-In at the Potawatomi Conservatory on April 20th went well. All
who went had a marvelous time.
Our next meeting will be on May 19th, due to the fact that the 26th will
fall on Memorial Day weekend. At this meeting we’ll vote in a new slate of
officers. Our scholarship recipient, Stacy Lamb from Bethel College will be
presented with her award in person. And an artist from Fort Wayne, Nicole
C. Moore-Malloy will be our demo artist. She will do the demo painting prior
to our business meeting since she has to drive a long way home afterwards.
See her website: www.artandsoulshop.etsy.com. Lastly, there will be a painting exchange among members. It should be fun!
Painting Exchange at May Meeting
Members are invited to bring a matted painting to the Membership meeting
May 19 for a “Painting Exchange.” Paintings should be no larger than a 1/4
sheet. Members who bring paintings will be eligible for a drawing to receive
another painting in exchange. You’ll leave our Membership meeting with a
fresh new painting for your home or studio!
Be sure to attend the Leeper Park Art Fair June 15-16! More details inside.

2013 Leeper Park Art Fair June 15-16
Plan to attend the Leeper Park Art Fair! Volunteers,
please review these guidelines.
Members’ Tent
Each artist must have a current retail merchant’s
license, obtained from the Indiana Department of
Revenue (1025 Widener Lane, South Bend). Make
sure you have signed up to volunteer your time
manning the tent during the fair.

greet fairgoers and answer questions.
Thank you to all who have volunteered! Let’s make it a great fair this year.
More information at our website, leeperparkartfair.org.
Former SJVWS member Rosalyn
Saz sent us a copy of a letter in
praise of Joe Wrobel she wrote to
the South Bend Tribune: “On Feb. 2
your obituary column told in a 2 x
4 inch space of the death of Joseph
Wrobel, who in the hearts, heads
and hands of hundreds was a most
successful man. The column said
only, “he was a retired art instructor
at IVY Tech.”
I’m sure that is what this modest
person would have wanted said
about him. But Joseph Wrobel was
a thousand times more than that.
Practically every person in this area
who ever picked up an artist’s paintbrush owes a living debt to him. He
taught colors and color mixing as
well as the technical aspects of painting. But he also showed us how to
look at things, how to see the world
around us and how to express our
reactions to it. We absorbed from
him his enjoyment of places and
scenery along with the achievments
of his family and of our own successes.
He taught “art” to artists, teachers and dabblers alike with honest appraisal and encouragement.
Although the notice said that he died
on Feb. 1, we who knew him
will testify that what was the
wonder of him will continue to
live. In every brushstroke and
every painting, in the way we
react to nature and in every
accidental smudge converted
to lovely advantage, we pay
him homage.
Such success in life is not given
to many of us. However, those
hundreds of us fortunate
enough to have known Joseph
Wrobel will gladly testify to the
passing of a most successful
man.”
